This post is an addendum to my previous post about integrated advertisements in gaming. Acclaim, a game known for titles like the N64 Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, went bankrupt back in 2005. However it was resurrected by Howard Marks as a a publisher of free MMOs just shortly after it was closed. They support their free MMOs through in game advertising as well as a shop where players can buy objects to be used in the various games.
Acclaim just reached their 1,000,000th user in their MMO Bots!!. The company has bounced back from utter death and is working on even more projects, including the Top Secret game that everyone has heard so much about.
Acclaim just serves to show how in game ads can be used to benefit both players and developers. The ads give Acclaim the budget they need to offer the games for free. It allows players to try out games with no financial commitment.
Learning about the success of Acclaim makes me wish that this strategy could some how be integrated into the various consoles marketplaces. Here’s to hoping.
