The NY Times cover the introduction of the first real world Representative Republic in an MMO

It’s way too late for me to write about it right now, but the NY Times has a great story up about recent developments in EVE Online. The condensed version is that a certain faction has accused the game’s publishers of unfairly colluding with another faction to give them an unfair advantage in the game, so to placate the accusing faction, and to win back the faith of the playerbase after recent scandals, CCP (the developer and publisher of EVE) has stated that players will elect an oversight committee from their own ranks, who will be flown to Iceland and assisted by professional government watchdogs to inspect and ensure that CCP is honest and forthright in their management of the gme.

This is huge. It’s the most clear blurring of real world vs. digital simulation via gaming that we’ve yet seen, and I’m really curious to see how it turns out. I’ll have more to say later, but in the meantime, read the article. It’s excellent.
