PAX 2007: Year of the Shooter

If you read our website often, you know that we love us some shooters. We are avid Rainbow Six Vegas fans, and play pretty much most any game that makes us look down the site of a rifle. Keeping that in mind, let me say that we were a little perplexed at the amount of shooters slated for release in the next six months.

I would feel pretty safe saying that 90% of the games we tried out immediately brought up references of “Halo” or “GRAW.” Granted those are two great games to be attached to, but how many shells do we need to fire during the holiday season? Personally, and I know I speak for Aegies as well, sometimes we want something a little different sometimes.

Again, I am all for splaying the guts of my opponents with a round whose caliber is stupidly high, but is it too much to ask for a few games that just hit up the other elements I like? Am I really going to have to buy Beautiful Katamari just to find something different this holiday season?

Since we’re talking about shooters let me break down the one’s we tried, and give you a single line impression of them:

Haze- Choppy frame rates, too much motion blur, but it could be fun. The game needs more work before we can tell anything substatial.

America’s Army- Again frame rates were an issue, especially when the game is shipping in about a month. Heavy optimization is needed. Our biggest complaint was that the game is built on a modified GRAW 2 engine, and really just feels like GRAW 3. On a positive, the game will feature 16 player online Co-op.

Kane & Lynch: Dead Men- Might as well be called The Michael Mann Game (note: this is not a bad thing. If you do not understand, it is imperative you go out and watch Heat, right now.)

Frontlines: Fuel of War- The game puts an impressive amount of models on the screen at once. Lots of destructible terrain.

Gears of War PC- Do we really have to talk about this? The frame rate was actually too smooth, it made us sick.

Those are all of the games that come to mind right now. Hopefully, if time allows, we’ll be able to put up more official hands-on impressions of the game as the weekend rolls on. For now, it’s time for some gaming goddammit.
