The internet hummed quietly this morning on inauspicious word that the rumored buyout of 1UP.com and Ziff-Davis game group by Hearst Media (owners of the high-traffic but surprisingly low profile UGO gaming portal) had gone through this week. Originally, word was seen on news portal PaidContent.org, and though the story was quickly pulled down this morning, it remained indexed in Google’s cache and RSS feeds. However, it was thought that this would likely mean a few layoffs while UGO attempted to fit 1UP.com within their content stable.
Unfortunately, this was not to be:
Based on Twitter and forum posts by (now former) 1UP staff, it appears all but certain that the 1UP Show video podcast and 1UP Yours audio podcast are no more.

This is our first post in about 10 months, and I wish it were under better auspices. However, this will not be the last. There may be a period of silence while we finish formulating plans that we had been discussing for some time, but eat-sleep-game will be back in action soon, with a new look, and some new faces. In the meantime, our hearts are with our friends at 1up (of which there are many). See you real soon, bitches.

….. that is fucking shit.
So sorry for all of you. I’ve GREATLY enjoyed everything 1UP has produced over the last few years and I hope you all… ahh… keep going.
Rest assured that what I’ve always loved about 1UP is the people, the personalities, and so I go where you go.
I am heartbroken. I was glad to hear that some old 1UP staffers will at least be appearing here.
Best of luck guys.
Yeah this whole thing fuckin sucks. Best of luck in finding new jobs guys. I’m glad to hear that you plan on doing podcasts and such regularly! But hey don’t pull a Shawn Elliot and say you’re gonna do it and then do nothing but post terrible life scarring TinyURL links on Twitter.
HOW CAN THEY KILL THE MANGOD??????
In other words,1up.com is useless to me as of today. No offense to the remaining staff, but 1up without Shane is just unbearable.
This year officially sucks, but by what Anthony said I’m probably going to be visiting here a lot.
I feel for all of you. As bummed out as I was to hear all this, it’s good to hear you’re carrying on. Kind of discouraging to those of us who hoped to one day be paid to write this stuff. PS fix your RSS link or something
I’m really sorry about all this. I’m hoping for the best here…
Best of luck to you Chuff.
I got my eye on here.
I am hoping for a site of awesome called upyoursfm.com
Good luck on the new projects.
To all the 1up staff, you will be missed. Please start up some podcasts as soon as possible, and please link to any sites/blogs started by former 1up staff. My 1up bookmark/rss has been replaced with eat-sleep-game…

Checking this from Chuff’s link. Seriously terrible how they gutted 1up. Hope to keep track of all the great people in their new ventures.
Hey guys, I speak for Anthony when I say thanks for all the comments; if you post one, bear with us if they take a while to appear, as I have to approve them manually the first time you post. Also, I’m working on the fucking RSS.
I hope you guys can get stuff going again. This is devastating to a huge whole community.
The 1Up staff (especially the podcasters) were a beacon in a sea of mediocrity. My thanks to Jedi Master Anthony and the rest of the misbegotten crew.
Well, sure… it is pretty shitty to see the 1up-Show and all surrounding it going down but maybe this negative occasion can lead to something new, even better?
Like… right here… get as much of the former crew together as it is possible and continue making podcasts and shows but over this site here.
I don’t really know what the financial situation in the business is and whether you guys have to try hopping onto some big network to get your salary in but it would be so awesome if you turned “eat-sleep-game” into the new 1up.
Maybe on a bit smaller scale than 1up.com which was a huge site with gamevideos and all that stuff combined.
You would immediately have a great community following your thing and with some good sponsors… who knows? I think you could pull off a great job here.
Anyway… all best wishes! I look forward to hearing from you people!

Worst.Day.Ever.
I know you guys will have the last laugh though. Hearst/UGO haven’t done themselves any favours. Just take a look at the hate on the UGO website…
Great to see you guys back and at it. Here’s to a bitchin’ 09 with ESG.
Long time 1up fan here. I’ve bookmarked this site and anxiously await it’s resurrection. Until then, I’m just gonna chuf it out.
I miss 1upfm already… seriously.
Viva la Rebel FM!
Please let us know if there’s anything we can do to help / assist you guys as you figure out what to do next.
Also – big fans, so know that you have some folks looking at what you’ll be up to next.
This blows. sitting in a cubicle and chuffing it out. Listenin to some LAN Party and 1up FM. Cant beileve UGO would just fuck everyone like that.
like tupac said -keep your head up! i’ll be waiting and listening with patient ears.
[...] Ryan Scott? Milky? (The best/most reliable entire list of who was fired can be found HERE at [...]
Best wishes to everybody on the list.
The whole thing is just so bizarre. Even though I’d heard rumors, I wasn’t expecting anything like this. Was anyone? It feels like I’ve lost someone close to me, but it happens to actually be many folks who I’ve never even met.
I know we can expect great things from them in the future, though, as sincerely heartbroken and confused as I am.
1up. Rocked. You should just start your own site and do podcast and reviews.. they don’t have shit after firing you guys. ITS BS, and they are stupid for doing it, You guys had the best game show/podcast on the Internet, TV and cable.
To all of those without a job after this morning I would like to offer my condolences if you are reading this. I have taken this much harder than I should being that I have never met any of you. I have not been an “active” community member on the 1up Network, but I have been one of the many people that enjoy reading the content and listening to the podcasts. I am also a 14 year subscriber to EGM. Since reading the news this afternoon, I have had this fiery rage building inside that I have been unable shake off throughout the course of the day. I am not upset because the magazine I have been subscribing to for half of my life will not be showing up in my mailbox anymore. I am not upset because my hour and half commute to work is going be a lot harder to tolerate without your voices keeping me distracted from the traffic jams. I am not upset because I feel I no longer have a review source whose opinion I can trust when I am considering dropping sixty hard earned dollars on a new game. I am upset because a lot of good people at the bottom of the ladder, who worked hard every day, are getting screwed by the corporate suites bad decisions again. Its every where you look these days. I am also in a position that will most likely be cut in the coming months so that CEOs, shareholders, and Vice Presidents can continue to get sacks full of bonus money every year. They get bonuses and we get the axe. The worst part is these people could not do their jobs if it wasn’t for us, the expendable, faceless, low level people. I am not talented with words like those who have been let go today, but I did my best, good luck and I hope to see all of surface somewhere new very soon.
I was doing some rough math a little while ago and I think I’ve invested somewhere around 500 hours into 1up’s podcasts and videocast over the last fourteen months. Those were the guys that got me inspired to start writing again, ratcheted up my passion for video games once more, and entertained me to no end over the long hours at my terrible overnight retail job. It’s a damn shame to see them go, but thank you for supporting and assisting in the production of Rebel FM. Keep the legacy alive!
