Rebel FM — Episode 2 — 01/13/09 (UPDATED)

Yes, we’ll get to writing about games eventually. I promise. For now though, we have another hour and a half of us talking about them, in the second episode of the #1 podcast in the world (sure, it was brief, but I’ll throw out hyperbole whilst I can) Rebel FM.

Show description:

“Episode two finds us feelin’ fine, as special guests Shane Bettenhausen (who tells us where the hell he’s headed to work next) and Andrew “Skip” Pfister (King of All ‘Casts) join us to reminisce about our best/worst 1UP/EGM memories, and chat about our favorite games of last year. Infinite thanks for all the support.”

So there you have it. Shane tells us where he’s headed, I tell a story about clogging up a toilet, and Andrew gets so high on cat allergies that he mistakes an instruction manual for a reader letter. Good times, I tell ya.

  2. Audio quality? says:

I know you’re still getting your system worked out, and granted I’ve only listened to the first 7 minutes so far, but… the quality has *not* improved from the first podcast, it’s much worse. Muted with random loud bursts a few times a minute. You really need to normalize your audio; it’s very hard to listen too.

  3. mishima says:

Downloading it now, really curious to know were Shane heading!

  4. sarge mat says:

Looking forward to getting home to listen to it. Anyone want to post where Shane is going when they find out (can’t download in college).

Great work guys. May there be many more.

  5. Naylor says:

    Sweet, thanx again guys.

  6. pappo says:

it’s amazing how fast you guys respawned in the scene. in the end is all about the personalities, i really don’t care about the quality and about the fact that the podcast is not on 1up.

for a moment there i thought my workdays would be especially boring. thanks for reassemblying in the underground!

props to you all. well done.

  7. monkeystick says:

Listening now guys.. thanks for keeping ‘em coming!

  8. pele says:

The quality did somehow get worse for this episode, but it’s easier to listen to if you turn the volume waaay down.

  9. ibplunderin says:

Well yeah the spikes are annoying and the audio quality is worse than the first which is amazing since skip is there… anyways its still awesome just a little annoying, can’t wait until you guys get it all up and running with the new equipment. its worth the little annoying things at the beginning.

  10. Tommy says:

I saw your twitter Nick. Will the updated version of this podcast be uploaded to itunes as well?

  11. MartyG says:

Great stuff – keep up the good work guys and I’ll keep downloading.

  12. Jsuman says:

Somebody is using a compressor for the first time… You’ve gotta tweak that attack time, or just use garage band.

  13. Whatsit says:

For those who asked for it, Shane’s headed to a game publisher, Ignition Entertainment, as Director of Business Development; it was in the works before the shit went down.

  14. Sammo says:

Great podcast. There are a bunch of weird audio hitches in the podcast, but I don’t care. Thanks for the podcast guys. I can’t wait to check out Geekbox on Friday.

  15. monkeystick says:

Agreed, I don’t care about the bad sound while they work out the bugs.. I love this crew.

  16. More xbox fanboys, how fresh says:

I promised to never come back here after those anti Sony things that were on this site BUT when i read on NEOGAF that Shane is guest i had to listen.
Have to say i respect what you guys did there are at least trying to explain this whole fiasco with that comic, halo background, gamertag, etc. I think you sounded honest, well most of you did. If you guys didn’t try to explain your self, and instead decided to act stupid like nothing happend, i promise you i would not have listened this podcast in future. But i really respect what you did there, and i will be back next week ti listen to new episode…..with new name of course.

  17. Kris Carter says:

Are you guys going to have an rss feed for the podcast anytime soon?

  18. Jay says:

Whats the song that was playing during the intro? Also, Its good to know that all you guys will keep on going. Listening to the podcast now, hopefully updated version will get on soon. Cant wait to see what you guys will do.

  19. Andrew says:

I’m currently listening to the podcast and someone just described how it would be if you didn’t use a wiki to find the UFO, you are completely correct. I went sidetracked from the main quest and thought, lets do some exploring, and so i went wandering and this crazy noise came in on the radio, and im thinking: “wtf is that?” Then i get radiation poisoning and i run around and then i see it, this massive alien spacecraft, i was shocked, i walked over to it and found a dead alien, with what does appear to be the best weapon in the game, it almost 1hit kills people. I feel so sorry, that you couldn’t experience it, i feel like i found something in the game that not alot of people find. It also reminds me of Left 4 Dead, one day i was talking with friends about ridiculously violent horror scenes, and one of my friends told me about this movie Brain Dead, he told me to search zombie lawnmower scene on youtube, and i watched the video and its essentially, a guy with an old fashioned lawnmower, shredding zombies to bits, blood and limbs everywhere. Back to Left 4 Dead, i was playing through and then i walked into a room, and i found blood everywhere, all over the floor and sprays on the wall, and at the end of the pool of blood was the exact old fashioned lawn mower i saw in the Brain Dead scene. Limbs also scattered over the floor. Its these little things in games that only a minority will notice, but the feeling you get when you find these things is amazing. Now i’m off to listen to the rest of the podcast, and im loving it!

  20. aihuman says: is email?I dont want my name read.Itll be okay if you read my username but not my actual name.

  21. Darren Gargette says:

Thanks for another wicked podcast, despite audio quality, it’s so much fun to listen to.

I would make a donation but unfortunately I have been laid off too from my games industry profession and can’t afford a bean.

Take it easy and congratulations on a successful podcast post 1up.

  22. Jason says:

I’m just waking up in the morning and you are just putting up the new podcast (the new version). What a wonderful thing to wake up to!

  23. Warren says:

seriously man that was a amazing!!

  24. Isaiah says:

you guys having any bandwidth issues? i cant download it from itunes.

  25. Isaiah says:

nvm. it finally started. CANT WAIT!

  26. Jeremy says:

    Just heard it, excellent episode.

And you know, Nick learned a very important lesson that first day at 1UP that all of us who have had office jobs must at some point. It is ESSENTIAL to identify the strongest toilet on the floor. On rare occasion you can go to a separate floor if needed, usually just if all the stalls are full and you can’t hold it, but otherwise that one scary toilet so powerful you feel you might get sucked in is always your best bet to avoid the clog.

  27. Arnoldas says:

not planning on torrenting the episodes?

  28. Tidus3000 says:

this podcast sounds tasty :) great job guys!

  29. Drakesfortune says:

Increase the release time on the compressor, make the attack time quicker, and then normalize the whole thing. Or call up Skip for some tips. :)

Podcast is great, I don’t agree that it sounds worse than last episode, but it does sound like someone needs some practice with the compressor.

  30. Marc says:

Love the podcast, you guys are doing an amazing job picking things up where they left off. One thing though…You should PROBABLY err on the side of caution when it comes to jokes about [not murdering] the president (ie. edit it out)… I’d hate to see anything happen to you guys just because someone takes a dumb joke out of context. Looking forward to more

  31. Jayslacks says:

Excellent podcast, guys. Can’t wait until the 1-up shadow moves on…

  32. Gareth says:

Gah 5pm cant come fast enough!

  33. Alkan101 says:

Amazing podcast! Will Matt be returning? And any chance of having Jeff Green and/or Robert Ashley on?

  34. Michael says:

Downloading now. Can’t wait! Thanks for not keeping us investors waiting. ;)

  35. Paul says:

Another good one guys. The outro song was great, Anthony. Spot fucking on.

And Philip, buddy, you’re so good at mc-ing and throwing out the prodding interview questions. So professional sounding that perhaps you should just make the jump to radio. ;)

  36. Andy says:

Y’all need to get Ziff-Davis alums to document all the crap that happened in the last two years and just let loose all the skeletons in the closet. Or if there are any worries about burning bridges, put it in a time capsule and see if anyone is still in a gossipy mood after 10 years.

  37. PhoTC says:

Sounding better! Made my day off today start off freaking great.

  38. Royce says:

Nick someone needs to make you a little cartoon avatar like Anthony and Arthur have. I am imagining just a giant, untamed jungle of hair with a beaked nose jutting out.

  39. Mauricio says:

hey guys, thanks for the podcast. FYI: The iTunes version still sounds shitty. Might want to update it. The version on Nicks twitter sounds a BILLION times better.

  40. RK Dynamic says:

Hey, I just wanted to let you guys know that Joystiq added a 1up show Tribute onto the end of their 1/12 podcast. If you haven’t heard it yet, it is pretty cool. Listen to the last 1min 45 seconds of their podcast to hear their version of the 1up Show Theme.

Keep doing what you are doing, and we (the fans) will always be here to take it all in!

  41. PhoTC says:

Oh snap, made it to the “And now, Anthony Gallegos, on…” segment. Yes, the podcast is official now.

  42. Nick Allain says:

    Hey guys,

I haven’t heard this yet but I was a huge fan of the 1upshow. I run a small east coast (as in New England and driving distance to Funspot from King of Kong) production company. Interestingly, most of us have or are working on degrees related to gaming so if you guys are in need of production assistance just send me an email. I’d love to help if you guys need a hand so feel free to drop me an email.

    - Nick Allain

  43. BJ says:

Anthony, loved the outro song – very Neil Young/J. Mascis…just the way I like it. Do you have an archive of other music I can download/listen to?

  44. Anthony Gornicki says:

Wicked. :D :D :D :D :D :D Can’t wait for the download to finish! Write those reviews if you’re subscribing on iTunes!

  45. dnvr says:

Awesome job, guys. It’s really great to hear you guys regularly again.

  46. Ben says:

Awesome awesome awesome. You guys hit the ground running. Here’s to many many more episodes of Rebel FM

  47. Tim "zentu" Norris says:

Hey can someone publish the RSS feed address, I don’t own a zune, and I HATE iTunes.

  48. DS says:

From one of many listeners from SouthAmerica (Argentina), congratulations. I’ll be sure to make a donation as soon as my bank stops breaking my thumbs.
It’s kind of weird to say this, but as a fan of 1UP, i’m very proud of you guys, keep up the good work, we’ll be here, supporting all of you.

  49. PF says:

Loving the podcasts gentlemen, keep up the good work. I have been a fan of the 1up Show since it first went up, can’t wait to see what Matt and Ryan will come up with next.

At the end of this episode it was mentioned that an homage was sang to EGM and 1up, and I felt that others would like to see it.

    Looking forward to Episode 3.

  50. I would like to point out that on Zune Marketplace as of right now you guys are number one surpassing Xbox Live’s Major Nelson. Congrats you guys.

  51. The Dude says:

I just finished listening to the podcast and I know what the audio problem is. It’s the Alesis (pronounced Ah Lee Sis) 3630. That is the single worst sounding compressor ever made by man or monkey. I have built clones of compressors by hand, ordering all of the parts from suppliers, and know a thing or two about compression. I have used literally hundreds of compressors, and the worst one I’ve ever heard is 3630. It’s the only compressor I know of that can make things sound like your podcast did, which is to say not very good because the compressor was all over the place, never doing what it should. Part of that was your settings, but part of it was that the 3630 never sounds good and rarely does what you want it to. If you want to find compression complicated, difficult, frustrating, and confusing, keep using that compressor.

So I highly…highly recommend taking that thing back. Engineers have gone over the design of the 3630 to try and figure out why it sounds so fricking bad, and they actually found two very significant flaws in the design that make it almost impossible to sound good unless you put tons of time and money into modding it. There are countless compressors in that price range that are very good, here are some recommendations:

DBX 166 has all of the functions of the 3630 but actually sounds decent. You can pick up the original 166 for around $100 on eBay. Any variety of the 166 will do (there’s an XL, A, and I believe X version and all will be a significant improvement over the 3630).

If you need more than two channels, check out the 1046 which is a good compressor but without gates on it. You can get them for $200ish used on eBay.

If you’d like to be prepared for all situations, and want a good compressor/gate/limiter, there’s an 8 channel compressor called the Presonus ACP88, which you can get for $450ish used on the bay. It’s super simple to use, has an auto attack and release mode that works quite well, and the gates are very nice. Again, it’s 8 channels, so you’d be prepared for anything.

You really should be compressing each voice individually, then running them into a mixer and then running the stereo or mono mix through some normalization or a mastering limiter plugin of some kind for the best result.

Another great compressor for the price is the FMR RNC (stands for Really Nice Compressor) which is a small 2 channel unit that sounds great and can be had for about $130 on eBay. It also has a mode called the “really nice mode” which is an easy button and tends to make everything sound decent.

I’ll be donating some money later today to help the cause, I hope you put it toward a better compressor. Honestly, the 3630 is a terrible, the worst compressor.

My final piece of audio advice, never buy ANYTHING Behringer. Every mixer, mic preamp, compressor they make is garbage. They go for the cheapest parts, cheapest design possible, and then they mass produce it.

Lastly, the KEY to good compression is to NEVER make your output signal louder than the average input signal. Meaning, don’t turn the gain knob up a ton on the output of the compressor. It should be relatively equal to the average sound coming in. The compressor is there to raise low volume sounds and reduce high volume sounds NOT to amplify the signal. The output gain is there to be used very sparingly because compression does lower the signal a bit. It’s there to bring it back up to the average level it came in at, and not as another gain stage. If you need more gain, use your preamp on the way in. If you turn the output gain on a compressor too high, you get pumping, which isn’t a good thing.

  52. The Dude says:

Oh and the podcast was awesome today! Keep up the great work.

  53. HOODBOYZ says:

After reading the blog at 1up that goes more indepth into the layoff it helped me make sense of this whole situation. You really have to step back and realize that 1up is a buisiness, and for it to continue it needed to change, so I will continue to follow 1up and I am really glad that you guys created this podcast because I don’t know what I would do with out it! THanks

  54. sarge mat says:

Great show guys just finished with it. I am looking foward to good things in the comming months from you lot as well as the other two sites.

  55. Benjamin I. says:

Hey guys, great show. Gonna miss hearing from Shane every week for sure.

Anyway, a little constructive..well, I wouldn’t call it criticism, but.. I think the show should perhaps be moved to Tuesday morning, or maybe Thursday if you’re gonna keep recording on Mondays. Giant Bomb usually isn’t up before 11pm PST Tuesdays, so all us Eastern folk don’t get it til Wednesday, usually. Also, Gamers With Jobs posts their podcast early Wednesdays.

  56. Jonah Falcon says:

Too bad you guys aren’t in NYC – or you could do a live video podcast for nothing here on my cable show. It would be limited to 55 minutes, but it wouldn’t cost anything.

Heck, if any of you are coming to NYC, let me know.

  57. Ruben says:

I was worried becuase I could not find anything about Rebel Fm on Zune. All that changed today and both the podcasts are up! Hooray for that! Look forward to making this the #1 podcast on w00t indeed.

  58. Nine_Inch_Tool says:

Great job guys, another great episode. I’m pretty happy for Shane, good luck to him at ignition, but I’m a bit sadden that he will no longer be podcasting, i was a big fan of 1up yours.

  59. Joe says:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE spread the love by showing us those pictures and etc. it isn’t that hard to throw links up :P

Don’t pull a and never post stuff on the blog in relation to the podcast.

  60. Shafnitz says:

Great show, guys! Keep up the great work. And Anthony’s outtro was amazing. You need to lay that down in a studio.

  61. Spunkv says:

Yay! A new podcast! With Shane as a guest no less! You guys just made my day complete!

  62. downloading now , keep up the good work.
it makes my morning shift go so much faster long as my ipod dont freeze as its so bloody cold out side.
they really should make the pod more easly to use with glove’s on …..

  63. egads says:

Strange that Shane is going to Ignition given that they released one of the worst games on the PS3, Vampire Rain: Altered Species. I guess they dont publish anything on the 360, so he is probably happy about that.

  64. Kamego says:

Great show guys. I’m glad you can do this as a weekly thing. Your insight into what happened during/after the layoffs made that corporate decision a lot easier to stomach as a fan of all the 1UP personalities in transition and those moving on, like Shane. This podcast does truly make my week; keep up the great work!

  65. DavidCrary says:

I’d say this sounds a hell of a lot better than the first one, and the content is just getting better and better. I think one of the things I’ll miss is the episodes of the OLD 1up show that had your fm slot, where Milky and Greg Ford would pretend that they were locked in a freezer and go over old issues of EGM and remember the past. Even when 1up fm took over and I liked it just as much as the old podcast I’d always hope that I’d get to have another one of those episodes, and even though I know now that’ll never happen with how things have gone, the content in this episode is similar and also both insightful and touching. Keep up the great work.

  66. MavTrav says:

Hey guys, just wanted to say Wow! It is truly impressive that in the wake of everything you are able to rebuild/transform so fast. I was so sad that i would never be able to hear you guys again. Anyway, I was just curious how is your subscription rate in itunes and such. I guess i am just curios if this (eat sleep game) is going to be sustainable for you guys and if this is going to be a long term project or something to hold you guys over. Its just going to suck if you start leaving one by one to do other things…though i know that would be good for you guys. Anyway, just wanted to say i really appreciate and i would pay for a subscription. You have the best podcast.

  67. Daniel says:

    Great work!

The sound quality is much improved and I adore the new into!

seriously that is a great into.

    Keep it up.

  68. 1 Up was the best site for the community experience, you had the best people, with close contact to the audience. It is a shame that it ended this abruptly.

I wish you all a wonderful spring and hope you will get new things started as fast as possible.

If you want a freelance writer, that will work with a bunch of fantastic guys, for free, then please contact me.

Specificaly if you want a contact in Scandinavia. I will happuly write for you guys, it would be my honour and a dream coming true.

You can, if you feel like it, contact me by adding me on facebook (serach for: Magnus Ahlberg, Sweden) or add me on MSN

Looking forward too seeing the new face of the former 1Up staff

  69. Some guy says:

    Great stuff!

Your podcast briefly topped the iTunes “most popular podcast” list in Sweden after the first episode. Since then it’s been jumping around between 4th and 1st place. You’ve got lots of fans over here too apparently :) (and it seems I’m not the first of “us” to post a comment here).

    Keep up the good work!

  70. water4tw says:

Great show guys, the sound quality is indeed much better. Hoping for some backlog segments and some great guests (Ryan Scott & Robert “Dr Max Chill” Ashley :) for future shows.

  71. spring says:

This is one of the best episode of any podcast I’ve heard in a long time. I loved listening to your memories of your time at ZD.

It’s a damn shame Shane isn’t a part of the regular cast, though. Hopefully he’ll show up on more episodes and other podcasts as well.

  72. GREAT episode, really reminds me of what I like about podcasts. Sound quality is much improved and and download speed was good as well. Shane gets an A+ from me, but I wish he was a confirmed “regular guest”. Anyway, I’m excited for the future of this podcast, but I want to know more about your future plans as far as making money goes. Ads? Subscription? Abandonment? How are you going to keep the podcast going while still making money?

I look forward to episode 3.

PS I hope you consider always having live outro segments- That one rocked.

Weekly Shane will be missed, you guys must get him as a guest often.

  79. misclet says:

rebelFM forever yo. the bursts of loud give the podcast much more impact than the podcasts of yonder. i always wanted to hear scattered emphasis. hmmm that sounded cool.

  80. C.D. says:

Keep ‘em up man!! Long time fan of EGM and then the podcasts; it’s great to hear Rebel FM not be a onetime thing. ^^ fucking A, guys.

  81. Mil3s says:

nice to see you lowered the bitrate!
saves on bandwidth and download time!
32kbps(VBR) seems to be a sweet spot for quality/size(with the right equiptment). Might be worth a try

  82. Dustin Perez says:

hey, i, however, thought that the audio quality was MUCH improved.

I just want to say that, nick, I know you were fairly new to 1up but you were immediately one of my favorite journalists.

Shane it brought tears to my eyes when I heard that you were leaving game journalism! I started reading EGM on your first review. I always thought you were a vet.
All the while I’ve read every piec3 you’ve written.
I wish you the best and I only believe that what is to come will bring me a better, yet less intimate, experience from the company that you have committed yourself to.

  83. Gazimoff says:

Another great show. Great to hear Shane landing on his feet as well.

On the change of scoring from a numerical system to a letter grade, do you know how much it pissed off the guys at Wikipedia? Have a look over at this link if you fancy a giggle:

Looking forward to the next episode!

  84. Thor Jarle says:

Could you post all your twitters so i can follow your escapades in your life?

  85. Alton says:

Your web site needs a rss feed for news!

  86. Kim W. says:

    Hi guys,

I just wanted to say that I’m not as concerned about sound quality as long as the content maintains the high level that it’s reached in Rebel FM’s short life. (In a way, the scratchier sound, much like the sirens and dog barks in the background, just add to the rebellious atmosphere.)

Philip, I know that you said on Gamers With Jobs that you wanted to make 1Up FM like a magazine, but I think that long form conversations like this episode really distinguish Rebel FM from other great gaming podcasts like Idle Thumbs or GWJ.

I’m looking forward to the next episode and whatever projects you guys have in the pipe.

    Kim W.

  87. Swamp Donkey says:

That was a great episode. If you guys can keep up with this level of quality content, you will stay at the top of the charts.

  88. bay says:

hey guys, just dropping you another ego booster. great to have you guys back on the internet airwaves.

  89. hiddengrounds says:

Fabulous episode. Shane and Skip were great guests, and good luck to them both. I look forward to seeing them back on in the future. Now if you can get Jeff Green and Shawn Elliott back for a show, or even a call in.

    Keep it up, Rebellion!

  90. Ba Ba Belmont says:

Just so you guys know, Rebel FM is the first and only podcast I’ve ever listened to. You freaking rock starting this so soon after the Ziff Davis fiasco.

  91. 1up Fan says:

Good for Shane! He is the best!…you all rock too, don’t worry! LOL

  92. ChrisDubya says:

Great episode, was cool to hear from Shane and Andrew. Was great to hear Shane speaking slightly more openly about certain stuff, can’t finger why but it felt like a different side of Shane than we’re used to seeing. Good times, keep it up.

  93. Axion says:

Great ‘cast guys. I loved every minute of it.

  94. zombicidalmanic(gamertag) says:

I really love this podcast you guys are great and its always a laugh keep up the good work!!!

  95. Hey guys, I just wanted to say thank you for another great episode of Rebel FM! I’m really enjoying what you guys are putting out so far and I’ll be sure to recommend the show to others.

I’d love to do something to help you guys with the show, but unfortunately I have no money to donate. But if you guys ever want or need any illustrations for the site/blog please give me a shout. I’d love the chance to do something in return for all the hard work you guys put into 1up FM and continue to do here in its next incarnation.

Good luck with everything, and I can’t wait to hear what you guys do next!

  96. orcus86 says:

I’m new to podcasts, but i’ve been a long time EGM and 1up reader and I gotta say for 2 excellent podcasts down I cant wait to see what will come to fruition in the future. Ive been a fan since the Hsu Milky Boyer McDonald Bettenhausen days and I gotta say you guys are carrying the tradition. Lots a luck to all of your future endeavors.

  97. Robert says:

Keep it up, loving it. That song at the end was gorgeous! And it did sound hella better than last week, that dude, #2, who said it didn’t, can S a D.
