How to get Call of Cthulhu

Call of Cthulhu is the first game we’re playing for the launch of the new Backlog podcast. For the uninitiated, Backlog involves taking an older game and playing it over 3-4 weeks, with each week’s podcast being an intense discussion of a very specific portion of the game.

Cthulu is pretty hard to acquire for the Xbox — as only a few copies are found via Gamestop or Amazon — but it is readily available on PC. If you want to get it on PC, simply go to direct2drive.com and search for Call of Cthulhu. It costs $29.95, but it sure as hell beats haggling with some online seller or hoping you win an auction on ebay!

Much love,

Chuf

EDIT: We’re going to play up to the SEWERS for the first podcast. Thanks, Greg for pointing that out!
EDIT 2: If you encounter issues running the game on PC and find solutions or workarounds, feel free to post those in the comments as well. We’ll be sure to do the same.

  1. Arcitee says:

When is the first podcast gonna be? On this weeks Rebel FM or next weeks?

  2. Greg says:

“reminds me of Eternal Darkness in a weird way,”

    Same source material, really.

  3. Niz says:

I went to eleven Gamestops to get this game.Got it for $12.99.

  4. TD says:

is there a area on this site where we can discuss the game in prep for the podcast without spoiling it here?

  5. dOOLEY says:

Wow, looked last week and there a bunch of copies at GS in my area in PDX, OR. Now the closest one is in Salem, about 45 miles away!

  6. Chosen says:

Also lookin for somewhere to talk about it!

All I can say tho is that attic scene, man that was amazing. Not many games put those emotions through me!

  7. MavTrav says:

Will Backlog be its own podcast subscriptioN?

  8. Fjornsvavne says:

I just want to add to this post that for those who don’t want to buy the game, but are interested in this fascinating piece of work; user Darkchiron is playing through this game and is closing in on the end. He posts short clips every now and then of about 10min each.
Of course, it’s not as tense as it would be playing by yourself, as to add he comments during playing. Just a tip.

  9. Fjornsvavne says:

*user Darkchiron on Youtube, that is. Hah!

  10. Falcomadol says:

Niz, you know that you can see if a game is in stock at Gamestop online, and then call the store and have them hold it right?

I mean, I’m not a huge Gamestop fan, but there’s no way that I’m going to more than one of them for anything.

  11. Spirit-of says:

That shit that goes down with the Fishman, just before The Sewers, yeah, that’s some shit. I HATE trial and error levels. The kind where the scenario plays out exactly the same way every time and gives me just enough of a head start to make incremental improvements on my performance each time I play, until I finally figure out what the game is asking me to do. The only time it ever works is in a side-scrolling shooter. In a FPS survival horror game all it does is make you go insane from watching the same cut scene for the buttmillonth time.

If I never hear “Ee’s awake! I can ear ‘em in thar movin’ aboot!” I’ll die a happy gamer.

  12. Camosid says:

It was like that the first time I played too. I dont like the execution but I love the atmosphere so I tolerate it.

  13. Fleeter says:

While looking for a patch, I stumbled across this site: http://www.tahionic.com/computers/Call%20of%20Cthulhu%20-%20Dark%20Corners%20of%20the%20Earth/game%20cheats.html , they host an unofficial patch that supposedly makes the stealth sections less of a hassle. It looks like quite a few things are changed though, so I’d recommend backing up your saves and or whatever other precautions a person should take before attempting to try it out.

  14. StefanTheMongol says:

I just put in my GameFly que, I’ll get it 2 days from now.

  15. Tyler says:

“If I never hear “Ee’s awake! I can ear ‘em in thar movin’ aboot!” I’ll die a happy gamer.”

    lol… too true.

  16. Dr Boo says:

I’ll start by saying I’m in Australia.

I check the EB games website to see if they had any pre-owned copies, it turns out that there are 2 stores in the state that had any.

I call the closest store (30 mins away) and they say sorry they don’t have any and that they have been getting a lot of calls about this title! You guys have a lot of pull apparently!

So instead I had to go to the EB store 45 minutes drive away! Hopefully it’s worth it…

  17. Robin says:

So when is the next podcast going to be availiable…tonight?

  18. Jason says:

On the 360, you can SKIP cutscenes by hitting A and the “back” button!

THis made the hotel escape marginally more tolerable :P Game improves significantly after that.

There will be a part coming up where you can’t seem to pick up what you are supposed to. Check your inventory.

  19. Arcitee says:

Yeah, that scene is so intense. I never really know where I am going and if you head in the wrong direction, too bad, try again next time.
On a positive note that IS survival horror I suppose.

  20. TD says:

I actually enjoyed the fishman/hotel scene. My buddy and I were playing and the entire time he was yelling to me “hurry up! Bolt the door! They’re coming!” I didn’t mind the repetition of it after dying a few times. The intensity made up for it. So far so good

  21. Ivan says:

I’m really digging it so far. It’s a nice change of pace exploring weaponless and helpless at times. I’m also determined to do this as long as possible without the patch.

Attack of the Fishmen took half a dozen or so tries (skip cutscenes with Backspace), but the sense of anxiety and dread from hearing those dudes chasing me was enough to push me forward every time. I actually disliked the sneaking around bit in the warehouses more.

I’ve encountered one scripting bug when you find that lady’s body in the basement of the towns’ newspaper development room. The camera zoomed into her as soon as I stepped in the room, but wouldn’t zoom back into my own perspective. I had to reload a save. I’ve also had a couple of crashes to the desktop. I wouldn’t mind so much if the save points weren’t so far off apart.

So yeah, I’m looking forward to hearing your guys’ thoughts tonight (?) or tomorrow.

  22. Iceveiled says:

Got an xbox copy, brand new, shipped for less than $23. Ebay. Won’t get it until today probably, so I guess I have until tomorrow to get to the sewers?

  23. Kyle Wright says:

Goozex is a good place to acquire old games, I checked and there are copies of this title on there.

  24. Dr Boo says:

Is anyone else playing on xbox 360 and having trouble seeing the game? It is so dark! I don’t know whether it’s the back-compat mode or my lcd which is making it so dark.

  25. TD says:

I’m playing on a 360 and it does seem pretty dark. I thought this was just my tv, but i guess that is not the case. Just think of it as adding to the suspense :)

  26. Dude says:

Chuff, your twitter sounds like your gonna kill yourself. Either do it or shut up all ready.

  27. Anthony says:

What? my twitter is just where i post some random shit. If you don’t want to hear it, please don’t follow.

  28. Aegies says:

For those who are noticing the 360 version is especially dark, you might try changing the reference levels in the 360 display settings. This adjusts black levels, which on 360, tend toward the PC colorspace, rather than the NTSC colorspace (I believe).

  29. Dr Boo says:

I can’t change the reference levels since I’m using Component, and apparently the game doesn’t support VGA when I try to play it on my pc monitor. So it looks like I’m going to be playing in the dark!

  30. Scott S says:

Hopefully, I can track the game down with having to download it.

When is the first episode anyway?

  31. Kohlstream says:

@ Scott S. yeah id like to know that too so i know how long i have to get to the sewers section.

*spoilers* iv managed to escape the hotel and some guy has just suggested taking the sewers so i think iv got one more section before im there. */ spoilers*

I gotta say the concept of this podcast is genius, im surprised i havnt heard of it before. I got Call of Cthulhu in a bargain bin a year after it came out for the PC. I stopped playing after a few hours, didnt get very far, but i thought the atmosphere was one of the creepiest i have ever experienced. It kinda puts most horror games to shame in that respect.

  32. Greg says:

    @Kohlstream

For more backlog-esque podcasts, check out the old RebelFM episodes if you haven’t already. Even if you’re not playing along, it’s still good stuff. Also the Squadron of Shame is good, although what they do is announce the game, you play the entire thing, and then 3 weeks later the podcast is released.

  33. Steve says:

Just received my PC copy in the mail today via ebay. Much cheaper than the expensive download version (16.95 w/shipping) and new to boot! It looks like it’s the French version but just about everything is in English anyway so it’s no biggie.

Not sure if this is my type of game or not but from what I’ve played it seems okay. The story’s interesting at least. I’ll continue playing later tonight.

Cheers to the backlog. Let’s pick something a little less dark though for the next game.

  34. Greg says:

My biggest complaint about the game thus far is the lack of direction. I was often at a loss as to where I was supposed to go next. It’s miracle I ever found the town drunk (the alley is practically hidden and there’s no indication that you’re even supposed to be looking for someone). I think I’ve been spoiled by Valve games, where they almost magically come up with ways to make sure the player is looking where they’re supposed to.

  35. Mike R. says:

I’m having a weird show-stopping bug that pops up when I’m

    SPOILERS

In the Jailbreak section, trying to push the cabinet out of the way in the office to get to the safe. The first time, I was able to push it. I died and re-loaded, and now, no matter what, I can’t push the cabinet without the game closing on my. It’s gotten to the point where if I touch the cabinet, the game fries.

    END SPOILERS

Any ideas? I’m playing on PC, with the d2d copy.

  36. Mat says:

If anyone is still loking for Call of Cthulu for Xbox I can sell it to them on eBay for $15. I can just post it as a Buy it Now when you want me to. E-mail me at mcrproductions@hotmail.com.

(BTW- This is the Disc only and I’m not advertising I’m just seeing if anyone still needs the game…)

  37. Mike R. says:

Oh, and I’m using Vista, which might be the problem.

It didn’t say anywhere on the d2d site that it doesn’t work with Vista. I smell a refund.

  38. Ivan says:

I’m playing on the Windows 7 beta and aside from the problems I described above I haven’t encountered anything a reload wouldn’t fix. I’m playing the retail version.

Speaking of saves, how many can I have in the Documents save folder before the corrupted save bug crops up?

  39. Steve says:

    @Mike R.

I think you have to run the game in compatibility mode. Someone posted the instructions in an earlier comment. I’m bettin’ you can’t wait for retail Windows 7 :P

  40. Marty says:

    Spoilers up to the sewers.

First mistake: they show a monster very early on, and the it looks a reject from Halo. :(

Secondly, why. the. fuck. did Jack spend the night in the hotel room. I’d been told by at least four different sources (the other outsider, the bus driver, the dame, and a loading screen) that staying in the town overnight is a bad idea. After I was blocked off from leaving the town square I figured I’d wander around. When I got to the hotel, the owner told me that the view from the rooms was excellent. I took this as a very obvious hint that I was supposed to go out the window and scale the fire escapes until I got out of the city, (or something like that). When Jack gets to the room he says that he doesn’t feel like opening the window, or moving a dresser to get to another room. I wandered around for way too long checking everything a hundred times, then shooting up some dope and checking everything another hundred times, before I thought to myself, “hey, maybe this dumbshit actually wants to go to sleep!”

Finally, it’s just becoming more and more obvious to me that this isn’t a game where I will be collecting clues and solving a mystery; instead, it looks like it will be an extremely linear and scripted scenario, done poorly: the constable starts to break down the door just as you grab the items out of the safe; when you’re trying to get passed the fan leading to the sewers, you have to use one specific metal rod and not one the the several metal rods and wooden planks left by the wreckage of the car; every sneak sequence seems to suffer from Splinter Cell syndrome, where there is only one way to get through a room and you will do it or get shot. Unfortunately, the stealth mechanics and level design come no where close to Splinter Cell, and I say that as someone who doesn’t even like Splinter Cell.

I am almost at the worst point you can be when playing an adventure game, where instead of walking into a room and thinking, “what should I do?”, I’m starting to think, “what does the developer WANT me to do?”

I’ll spare you my thoughts on what they’ve done with the Lovecraft universe (hint: they fucked up). Thank you for letting me vent.

  41. McAesp says:

ok I caved, I bought a boxed PC copy. Now I have to take a work PC home over the weekend. At least I picked it up for a bargin $29 AU. Can’t wait for the podcast on Monday.

  42. Arcitee says:

    Impressions:

Spectacular atmosphere, great writing/ voice acting, interesting story. I loved the first part of the game when I was exploring the town learning things, constantly getting creeped out. Awesome, awesome stuff.
Then I get attacked by the Fishmen and the game becomes complete bullshit. Grueling, unfun, scripted events that require perfect execution.
And of course after that there is a forced-stealth section that is another sort of bullshit.

If this game was an old school adventure game I would say it is perfect, I liked the fact that the game did not spell out what the combination to the safe was or where the old-drunk was all that is a nice change from the current Gears of War press y to solve gameplay. However, as an action-stealth game this is puerile dog shit.

All in all I love everything about this game except actually playing it.

  43. Odinez says:

I was able to find this find it at gamestop for the xbox. I have a query though, the game’s title screen warns that you will occasionally encounter weird graphical or sound events. I makes sense for a horror game, but at the start of the second level, where you sneak into the convenience store, every time I tried to talk to a person I would hear static. This would happen for both my voice and the voice of the person I was talking to. I played for about half an hour and I was still having this issue. At this point I’m inclined to believe that it’s a problem with the emulation or something. Any tips?

  44. Odinez says:

Well, I think I’ll just turn on the subtitles.

  45. Greg says:

Odinez, the emulation while playing on the 360 is spotty. It’s mostly audio-based glitches like the absense of background music. Static sounds annoying, that sucks. I haven’t encountered any bugs in the PC version yet, unbelievably.

  46. Hana C. (sunalso) says:

I am not a horror fan (actually I’m just a big wuss)but I’m making a stretch here to play along with backlog and experience something new.

One thing I’m interested in is the “sanity” aspect of the game. This is a mechanic I’ve never experienced before in a game. As you are playing are you making an effort to conserve your sanity, or are you peeking into every basement window?

  47. [...] those looking for their backlog on Call of Cthulhu they said they will be putting that up on Monday. I’ll be looking forward to that with [...]

  48. Ota says:

I couldn’t play this game for more than 2 minutes the first time, with some help, played about half hour of it, let me see if can bring my self up to do it this time.

  49. Destrin says:

Call of Cthulhu was one of those annoying games where the save file was secured, meaning without hacking utilities and a chipped xbox it was almost impossible to copy the saved game around. It was tied to the xbox you first played the game on.

At the time I played it I was living between two houses, the lack of ability to move my saved file around meant that this fell by the wayside – I got pretty far but never completed it. I think enough years have passed that I will live with starting again :)

  50. apoc_reg says:

Got this on Xbox 360 BC ages ago and never played it

Just played through to the sewers (just come out of the sewers actually) and now anticipating the backlog discussion.

Love how its basically (up until now) a point and click game but with some decent sneak mechanics.

The audio is also really good when you start to loose your sanity!

Wish the company who made it didnt die as a next gen one could be fantastic.

  51. Kohlstream says:

    SPOILERS

ok i just got to the sewers. I’m not a fan of this game’s stealth mechanic. Running to escape the fishmen was fun, very frantic and ‘trial and error’ but i didn’t think it was too difficult. The warehouse sneaking part was annoying tho, but once i got to the sewers and saw that little girl ‘alive’, the smeared blood trail to the corpse and hearing noises, its got my interest back.

    END SPOILERS

I think this game for me will be having to suffer through some action sections to play the adventure game within.

  52. Fleeter says:

@Kohlstream and others with similar sentiment

After the grand opening section I identify with the feeling of it being a catchy adventure partially run down by (often running) action sequences that either don’t make much logical sense or are just plain frustrating on account of design limitations (or error).

    SPOILERS*** Beyond the sewers…

I couldn’t resist playing past the sewers. I just finished up the jailbreak section. Getting that first damn weapon is so satisfying – I had to laugh at what it is. Every time I’m able to kill one of these seemingly sick bastards is… very satisfying. Jack has been carving a tally into the back of his journal to represent each kill, starting with the first body dropped during the truck ride into the sewers.

Even if it’s a bit wonky… equipping that pistol for the first time and creeping around a corner to look down the sights at one of those bumbling hellions… I know this series of events has been replicated in many games. But this game built it up in such a great way. And again, I knew it was coming, but damn, it still felt so good.

    ***SPOILERS

  53. Fleeter says:

And as another note for those who cant get the game but want to experience it. While saying that this game is fun to watch may be creeping into wahjah territory… I imagine it being fun to simply watch.

So as mentioned before there are various youtubers that have played through the game and recorded their entire sessions. I found a couple last night.

There is also a somethingawful “Lets Play” thread found here: http://tinyurl.com/SActhulhu

  54. McAesp says:

Has anyone else had the problem where you can’t save the game (PC)? When I get to a save point and action the sign on the wall, the save page comes up but I can’t select anything and the only option is to Close. Please help…. I have played the first section 4 times now.

  55. Marty says:

Alright, I’ve played up to where you get some weapons, and I am much happier. For all the problems I have with this game it keeps drawing my back to it somehow. I guess it’s the atmosphere, even if the background music is busted.

  56. Kohlstream says:

    @ McAesp

I did a quick search on google and the only solution i could find for not being unable to save was on a torrent site. It says “Remember if you want to save your game you must change windows clock time to 24 hour.” Try that out.

  57. mcaesp says:

    @ Kohlstream

Thanks for help. I tried changing my clock to 24 hour time but still am having no luck saving. Don’t know if it has something to do with my date format, location or other reginal settings. I have tried setting everything to English (US) to see if the helps but still nothing (I’m in Australia so I had it set to English (AU). This is very frustrating. I downloaded some save games and put them in the directory to see if I could then see them in game but this doesn’t work either. Can someone please tell my the directory structure for the save games. It’s in My Documents\Bethesda\Call of Cthulhu\??????
Has anyone else had these problems? If not, does this mean all of you have your clock set to 24 hour time? I’m running out of time before this Monday’s Backlog. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  58. Gareth says:

I managed to acquire this using a torrent. Not sure if that discussion is allowed here.

Using Vista and so far works perfectly. Sounded wasnt working properly initially but seems to work if I leave the resolution at 800*600 for some reason. Id rather a higher res but I can put up with that for sound and perfect framerate.

  59. Steve says:

    @Gareth,
    *rant
Dude, you should really buy the game. Torrenting is killing the PC game market. Publishers are getting more and more afraid to release their good games because of people like you. You can pick the game up new real cheap on sites like amazon and ebay or pick it up on direct2drive and enjoy the experience of an all digital CDless playthrough. Stay legal dude.
    *end rant.

Also this is a XBOX/PS2 era game. 800X600 isn’t that terrible for it’s graphical fidelity.

  60. Kohlstream says:

    @ McAesp

yeah the Dir for saves is My Documents>Bethesda>Call of Cthulhu. the only thing i can think of is to make sure the folder and files arnt Read Only. Right click the folder, then properties, then untick ‘read only’ if its ticked. its a long shot but you never know. and for the record i have my clock on 24 hour time, as it happens.

  61. McAesp says:

    @ Kohlstream

Thanks again. I think you might be right with the permissions (read only) thing. The laptop I’m playing it on (or trying to) is one I took home from work on Friday. We have a standard work PC image with a domain setup and the My Documents folder is synchronized over the network. This is most likely the cause of my problems. I ended up borrowing my brother laptop PC and the game works fine on that. I even considered installing XP on my MacBook Pro (via boot camp) as I really wanted to follow the first backlog. Anyway, it’s all good now. Thanks Kohlstream for you help and support, I appreciate it.

  62. krazyman says:

I am having no problems running this on vista 64-bit. I have a 9800gt and a core 2 duo. Anyways my thoughts on the game: The atmosphere is really great in this game, as a result the game is still scary even with lacking graphics. I am really happy that they do not give you a gun for awhile, it forces you to play the role of the character. Anyways, cannot wait to find out what is happening with the story.

  63. Gareth says:

    Yeah I hear ya Steve.

  64. Gareth says:

Anyone got any tips for a predominantly console gamer trying to run this on his laptop?

My laptop: NEC Versa P8310 2Ghz Core 2 Duo 8600MGT.

The game works fine, but every time I try to play Ill get 10mins into it then it just shuts off automatically and feels fricken hot as shit. Is it likely the heat causing the laptop to shut off (it happens other times too when I have it on my lap occasionally), or it it more likely that its some incompatibility with Vista and the game?

I dont see how it could be though as it installed fine and works fine (until if auto-offs). Can I disable a core or something?

Any help would be really appreciated. I really want to play this game too as it looks like its right up my alley.

  65. Kohlstream says:

    @ Gareth

It sounds like its overheating. I dont know alot about laptops but i know they do get very hot, and are designed to get hot. My advise is to give it a good ol’ dust inside with some compressed air.

My PC had a similar issue. I just used compressed air on my GFX card, loads of dust came out, havnt had a problem since. Im playing the game on Vista 64 and havnt experienced any problems so im sure it isnt that.

  66. Hana C. (sunalso) says:

    **spoilers**

This is from a much longer blog post:

The most frustrating and rewarding part of ‘Call of Cthulhu’ so far has been the sequence escaping from the hotel. Frustrating because it is trial and error and requires a very specific sequence of events that includes jumping (twice), and I thought I’d never get through it. I spent more than an hour on this one tiny part of the game. I finally made it to the next save point, and promptly got up and did a Super bowel Touchdown end-zone dance all around the kitchen. I don’t think I’ve felt that much satisfaction completing a challenge in a game since I beat Sonic 2 when I was twelve.
    —————

Was I the only one that wanted to quit at this point? It was so freakin’ difficult!

I doubt anyone cares, but whole blog post is at: playwithme09.blogspot.com

  67. Fleeter says:

After you’ve attempted to clean out any dust – another tip for an overheating laptop is to make sure you have it on a hard surface so that heat can dissipate at a faster rate. If you’re playing with it on your lap or on something made of fabric, then that’s not good.

Beyond that you can place something like a small hardcover book (well anything hard that is something like 4 x 3 x 1.5) wedged underneath the rear of your laptop to angle it up – to let heat escape from underneath. Of course, make sure you don’t block any vents with the object. Angling your laptop like that should make a significant difference. Most after-market cooling mats work simply because they angle the laptop putting empty space between the desk and the laptop.

AND beyond that you could get a small house fan and angle it to blow under the laptop… hah… hopefully you have noise canceling headphones.

  68. Gareth says:

Thanks for the advice. I managed to get over 30mins game time in last night by sitting the laptop on 4xdouble coasters for better ventilation (on hard surface) and disabling a core.

Can compressed air be found at most large department stores or whatever? That sounds like a good idea, because when I first got the laptop I noticed most of the heat escaped out the right side vent, but now that doesnt seem to be the case at all.

  69. Donniey says:

Ok, so I’ve got my pick between the Xbox and PC version, and money’s not an issue. Which version is gonna give me less hassle to play?

  70. Steve says:

    @Donniey,

From what I’ve read the xbox version under 360 BC has terrible sound emulation. If you have an original XBOX you shouldn’t have any problems though.

I picked up the PC version and that one has been pretty solid for me. There is a pretty awful save bug (which I personally haven’t come across) in the game though so take the advice from others on this forum and make save backups if you go that route. The prices are about the same for the XBOX and PC version (about $15 give or take).

  71. The Dude says:

Damn, I just got this used from gamestop and while the disk actually looks like it’s in good shape, there are a couple small pits in the disk that appear to make it crash as soon as you start the second part of the game on 360, and then I popped it into my xbox, and while it loads, all of the dialog is gone. So I tried to turn on subtitles, but they fly by faster than a speed reader could hope to read them.

  72. I’m glad to see that backlog is back and picked a game well-worth playing (so far..)

There are so many things I’d like to talk about, within just the first 2 hours of the game. Perhaps, some of the best 2 hours ever grace a survival-horror game (which CoC most definitely is, fps view or not).

#1: This game doesn’t just pull from HP Lovecraft for source material, but fully captures the literary nature (through the excellently written journals) and atmosphere (through some interesting cut-scenes and, of course, the sanity mechanic). The developers could have just slavishly drew from the Cthulhu mythos, but instead every part of this project displays the result of what can only be a infatuation for the material.

#2: Shooting works in first person (durr!),platforming works in first person (Mirror’s Edge, Half-Life, NOT this game), but I have many doubts whether stealth could ever work in a fps and Cthulhu isn’t making a strong argument against that grievance. The most of what can be said of CoC is that it immerses you in the reality of it all, as you nervously peak around a corner and blindly hope no one is around the next corner. It’s hardly the puzzle game of MGS/Splinter Cell, for better or worse–I think worse. I for one did not understand at all how “sneak mode” benefits the player. It feels as if the enemy is casting a FF-style ‘slow’ spell on you. I’ve never been in a situation that using crouch w/o “sneak” hasn’t been the superior method, which seems wrong being that that ‘sneak mode’ should help you….sneak.

#3: What the hell is that noise you are making when you are crouching? It’s as if you are squeegeeing a window, while a cat is dying.

Can’t wait to hear what you guys and other ex-1UPers think.

P.S. put Dreamfall,Okami, The Witcher, and Jade Empire for the poll in future months.

playing it on 360, no problems so far.

although apparently the Cult of Dagon mantra is SPREAD OUT! SEARCH THE AREA!

To #171, the Thief series of games is a good example of first person stealth done well. It gave you just enough control to feel that you were actually creeping around the place.

After having a few problems with the game (see my previous posts) I have now played up to the sewer section (well, a little bit past that. I didn’t want to stop). I am going back and forth sometimes loving it and other times getting very frustrated. The escape from the hotel section nearly had me quitting the game and saying stuff this. What was happening for me was that because I was running the game at 1024×640 (or whatever it is) it was making me move slowly. I didn’t really notice until I kelp dying at that part and thought “I can’t be this crap, can I?” I then changed the resolution down to 800×600 and beat it first time. The movement was much faster/smoother it has made the game sooo much better. The tension and atmosphere are fantastic and the fact that you don’t have any weapons (yet) but still don’t feel that you are somehow deficient or powerless is testament to the great game design. I am looking forward to getting a gun so I can start killing some of towns people how for some reason think I’m public enemy number 1 and want me all kinds of dead. So far I have enjoyed the game except for the frustrations mentioned before, all of which were hardware/settings related. I can’t wait for the Rebel FM Game Club (AKA backlog, saw your twitter pkollar) so I can continue playing.

  76. Adrian says:

Jesus Christ, if I don’t get past the ‘escape from the hotel’ section soon I’m going to have to give up – I’m about to have a heart attack! :)

  77. Marshmallo713 says:

Yeah, the hotel escape is the most bullshit thing I’ve ever played! I love Megaman, but this takes repeating something and memorizing it to a whole new evil. I’ve played it at least 15 times now. If I don’t mess up and get killed early, i make it further than the last time only to get stuck because I can’t figure out where the game wants me to go… then I get killed. I can’t be the only one that is ready to quit. Did the Rebel FM guys have this same problem? Please let me know if I’m just the worst player of all time.

  78. Hana C. (sunalso) says:

It is possible to get past the hotel escape, though it is best if you’ve set it up right the night before (bolted the door in the room next to you – left the door open in between) but nothing tells you this, and it is possible to bolt the door in between the two rooms – and I guess then you’d be really screwed? I would of actually liked this part if it hadn’t involved jumping. Doing everything else perfectly only to be die because of a crummy jump mechanic mad me want to pick up my keyboard and beat something with it.

  79. Marshmallo713 says:

I’ve gotten as far as the warehouse where the walkway breaks and those two gaurds spot you. Then I ran around and got outside again on the roof and I didn’t know where to go. I looked around the roof for about 4 minutes until the game glitched and wouldn’t let me walk away from the edge back to roof and would only let me walk off the roof to my death.

  80. Greg says:

    @Marshmallo

If you’re breaking the walkway, you’re doing that room wrong. That’s a sneaking part.

  81. Marshmallo713 says:

Ah, thank you. I’ve only gotten to it once sense I’ve died so many times. One mistake and I have to go all the way back. Its so annoying its making me not want to keep to trying. It would probably have been better to play this on the PC. Too bad I’m broke. But even with being caught I was able to get by that part, but then just to get stuck on the roof.

  82. Max says:

I’m playing on PC and I am having a serious problem when I try to load up the game. Whenever I open the CoC app. my entire system starts freaking out and crashes.

  83. Hap says:

Hot damn! The Gamestop in my hick ass town actually has CoC… who’d a thunk it?

I’ll be playing the crap out of this game tonight. ^_^

  84. Greg says:

Marsh, at the spot where you break the walkway, go left and there’s a save.

  85. Matt says:

Hi, everyone, just wanted to join into the backlog since i have an old copy of the game covering dust. Is there any way to get this to work in a windowed mode and not full screen?

  86. kruton says:

should i get the pc version or the xbox version??

i only play rts games on pc…so im not so used to first person pc controls. on the other hand, i dont want to search all over the state for a copy on xbox. so the d2d version is very appealing
