Happy Thursday morning! Alternately, thanks for staying up late!
Show description:
This week we’re joined by WhatTheyPlay’s John Davison and MTV Multiplayer’s Patrick Klepek, to give impressions of Halo Wars, Killzone 2, Fallout 3 DLC, and more, discuss the casual/hardcore gamer divide, and answer a few letters in which what is yours is replaced with prizes.
As stated in the show, our intro theme song — which will be replaced with the final version next episode — comes courtesy of a collaboration between SXEZSKOZ and Bilithic. Thanks a million, talented dudes!

Thanks!
My persistence payed off! Hazzah!
I love you John Davison, you beautiful man.
listening to it now. Go go GoW2!

cool, cool
looking forward to listening to this tomorrow

John Davison Fucking rules…well done guys for getting hold of this legend of gaming podcasts.
Very good so far
Terrific podcast this week, guys! While I’ve definitely enjoyed the other episodes, I loved this one the bestestest. *thumbs up*
Nick,
Put a USB Stick into your PS3, copy your Burnout Paradise save over, put the USB Stick into your PC and copy the save file folder onto your HDD.
Go to:
http://www.burnoutteamrocks.com/
Select the EXPORT file in the save folder and click the upload button. It’ll tell you where all the jumps, smashes and billboards you have and haven’t done are.
Can’t wait to listen to show when I get home from work.
Greetings from South Africa
“# Boris Says:

What’s wrong with the Digg link? Seems fine to me.
Anyone else having problems with it?
Can you possibly make a post here with URLs to stuff you talk about in the podcasts? like the browser based games and so forth
Another great episode guys. I had my doubts when 1up closed (as good as) and thought I would have to look elsewhere for my gaming podcasts but now it’s bigger and better then ever. Eat-Sleep-Game (Rebel FM), Geekbox, Area5, all this and 1up Yours (Listen Up) still going (well one ep at least), gaming has never been so lucky… The only sad thing is now I have to wait another week for the next Rebel episode.. Maybe i’ll just listen to it again….and again..
Great show! I love the music you guys pick. Unicorns ftw.
Great show thanks.
If you’re playing burnout paradise on ps3, you can upload your save here:
http://www.criteriongames.com/burnout/paradise/myparadise/
and see where your missing gate is.
Excellent show!
The mic levels are much better, the conversations are informative and pleasant. Good chemistry.
Good on mic levels this week, bad on chewing.
great show guys, much improved
Was Ryan O Donnel on this Podcast John Davison is great addition but I hope that ryan is there as well.
Great work guys.. I listen to your podcast at least twice a week when I work out. You guys work fast and really care about what you’re doing. Keep up the great work!
john davison is amazing!
Was that a nod to The Impossibles during one of the breaks? Excellent show by the way. Keep up the great work.
I haven’t tried this myself, but to find that last Burnout gate, you can upload your game save to http://burnoutteamrocks.com . You (apparently) get a map showing the gates/billboards you need.
This was a much better episode than the last. If anyone is reading this who had any misgivings after the last one, give this one a shot.
When I read the show notes and saw that there was a planned hardcore vs. casual discussion I immediately thought, “I no, not another classic debate that no one actually wants to hear,” but it went well.
Any show with John Davidson on it gets two thumbs up from me.
Will the backlog podcast be in the same itunes/rss feed as the regular Rebel FM feed? Or do I have to subscribe seperately?
“…intro theme song — which will be replaced with the final version next episode”
Nooooo! I love the different intro music each episode. At the very least, you’re going to keep changing the outro music… Right? : /
I want to give Arthur props for this episode. I was one of the many who didn’t care for his “style” last week. It really seemed like he took the feedback to heart and made the necessary changes. Great episode!
I was also one of those who criticized Arthur last week and I wanted to make sure he understood that we appreciate his making an effort to work with the rest of the team. You will make a great addition to the team it’s just a matter of finding your voice. Thank you and keep up the good work.
As for giving your old clunky DS to your mom, thats EXACTLY what I did. uncanny.
dugg for use of the term “pussy player” about 29 minutes in..
“Can we have some information on the musics during the “commercial break”?”
I second this…
I’d also like to give respect to Arthur for listening to last week’s criticisms. His contributions this week were definitely welcome.
John Davison is more awesome than Christian Bale, and he’s freaking Batman. Patrick also seems like a cool guy, hope both will make future guest appearances.
Great episode, glad I continued listening.
Great show, guys.
And yes Burnout Paradise should be played on the PS3 if you don’t have it go get it.
I think this was the best episode yet. I can’t wait to hear the Call of Cthulhu backlog. I’ve never played the game, but I might have to pick it up and play along at home.
Even though nobody else laughed, that joke about the amber alert on the last burnout gate was clever and hilarious, good show sir, it was appreciated.
Well done
Another Great Podcast Guys. Can’t wait for the backlog. Anyone else already played past the stopping point? Just an excellent game.
sick to see that SXEZSKOZ will be making the intro song! I loved the 1UP FM one. I liked the echoey thing in between the breaks. Downloading this episode now, can’t wait to listen! Keep up the awesome work!
Jumped to the end of the podcast, was disappointed to find no backlog. I’m honestly not sure I want to hear the endless banter without that delectable delight at the end of the tunnel.
Hey guys. I recently stumbled across a H.P. Lovecraft reference in Fallout 3. See http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Dunwich_Building
I’m a core gamer with only a Wii. I don’t have a ps3, 360 or cutting edge pc, (and don’t want one). I think it might be time for a new category of gamer beyond casual or hardcore.
I’m introducing the Insane gamer. The insane gamer is someone you disregards the game itself, and pins their opinion on the hardware. It’s completely insane!
I’ve been gaming for 20 years and love my Wii games.
Resident Evil 4
No More Heroes (check out the full 90min movie on Googlevid/vimeo)
Call of Duty WAW
Medal of Honor Heroes 2
Super Mario Galaxy
Geometry Wars
Pro Evo Soccer
Blast Works
Mario Kart
Rayman
(picking up)
Mad World
Deadly Creatures

You guys came close to loosing this subscriber this week.
Nice show. The levels sounded really good, but Nick still sounds like he’s sitting across the room sometimes. I love the Oakland ambiance, Chuf’s awesome Civ stories, and 2 and a half hours of podcast means I get to escape from the tedium of my lame ass job. Arthur, is it too late to submit a resume for some writing? Hit me at my email (which is a secret to everyone).
you guys should mess around with the mics or dampening or something. sometimes it’s like nick’s throwing out comments from the kitchen and anthony’s on the couch across the room watching tv.
i was glad to hear a more tempered opinion of casual gaming, which i doubt would have been the case without davison around.
I too had the problems with Burnout Paradise in finding the last gate and the last billboard. I didn’t know for a long time that you can actually go into the menu for the game to where you see the license progression and scroll down to discovery…and it will actually show you how many you have and need in each area of the map. Once I narrowed it down, it didn’t take long.
Loved the episode guys, very much improved over last weeks.
I’m glad that it seemed like Arthur took some of the comments to heart, he came off much better this time around. Less negative and had more insightful comments. Well done.
Also happy to see that Anthony took more of a main presence on the show, he brings a great sense of humor that is always welcome.
Really a great listen. Keep up the good work!
OK, my 2 cents on the whole “casual vs. hardcore” debate:
I think the whole idea of “casual vs. hardcore” is a false dichotomy. People’s interests aren’t that black and white. I’ve got a friend who loves Halo, Call of Duty, Madden, and who has put days into Fallout 3 (he’s actually a pilot, and he’ll also do those crazy real-time flights in Flight Simulator). He is, by most definitions, a hardcore gamer, but he doesn’t read any gaming magazines, go to any gaming websites, or listen to any gaming podcasts. He doesn’t even know that this whole “casual vs. hardcore” debate exists. He’s a very different breed of gamer than we are.
We, the people who come this site especially, are not just hardcore gamers but enthusiast gamers. We embrace the culture around video games more than the games themselves. I think the fact the we recognize individual game journalists and actually follow them from one site to another says more about who we as gamers than our actual tastes in games.
Now I’m not saying that I’m somehow a better gamer than my pilot friend (in fact I can never beat him Halo, CoD, or Madden). I’m just saying that the situation isn’t so black and white, and that we in particular, being on one side of the extreme, have a very skewed view on things.
excellent show guys.. just finished listening
great to have new episodes of this, geekbox and retronauts all queued up.. feels like home
When you’re finalizing that intro, you know what you should drop? The bullshit!
I don’t even know why it’s there. You never had a stupid cutesy bullshit line in your old intro. All it does is ask a stupid cutesy bullshit question.
It’s making you guys look really unprofessional.
I’m seriously considering unsubscribing to the podcast. Get some sack, guys. It’s like just because you have a preference for pie or cake, it’s holding you to fucking ransom. It’s just elitist and negative and unprofessional. It says nothing positive about any other desert foods or any other potential lines that could be in the intro.
It was better this week, I’ll admit.
I mean, it felt like the ratio was a lot better. I’ve gotta give you props. The music helped balance out that stupid line, but it still happened. I sat there waiting and it still happened.
Not even the handsome voiced John Davison could save the fucking thing! He got devoured by the stupid ass cake or pie bullshit!
What don’t you fucking get?!
The intro is great! It’s a great promotion for the band! Then you come in here, dadumdadum, with that absolute bullshit! Why are you trashing their intro?!
I’m unsubscribing.
We’re through…
You guys might not know this, but awhile back the 1up Show had A Perfect World commercials in it! I played it and it was alright. Anyways another good show so far. Its cool to have John on, he is a podcast whore right now and i love it. British people SOUND so smart but they are just as dumb as us…. and thats a good thing. RebelFM is stealthily sneaking up on other podcasts to slit their throat. Sam Fisher like. Keep it up.
Thanks for the episode! I enjoyed it during work today. Was that an Impossibles cover being played during one of the breaks?? Totally awesome.
I just wanted to say after playing Mirror’s Edge ,I feel all other FPS have there camera a little low.I am playing Bioshock now and I feel like the gun is at my waist.
Was this RebelFM or 1UpFM? I can’t tell; it was that good. Excellent job this week!
I kinda fell asleep during this episode.
Thanks for another awesome podcast guys. I have a pretty stressed out life and listening to you guys helps me get through the week. For economic reasons (and a few other issues) I jettisoned Warhammer online and am now going to check out Perfect Life as a possible replacement. I’m in the precess of downloading it at the moment and even the random artwork shown looks just amazing.
I’m taking Arthur’s flippant dismissal of Dead Rising’s story as a challenge to write a piece about why its one of the only gaming narratives in the history of the medium that’s actually worth a damn. Its positivity bursting at the seams with provocative metaphor and salient cultural criticism that’s ripe for interpretation.
Hey,
Long time listener to the 1up podcasts, and now, recently, to this one. I would just like to state the case that the addition of Arthur Gies to the podcast was a brilliant move. His thoughtful commentaries on various issues is much welcome. A very good addition to the team.
Though one may not always agree with his standpoints, the logic behind the reasoning can’t be faulted.
Keep up the good work. Also, very nice to hear JDavison again.
This is probably the best podcast you’ve guys have done and you probably shouldn’t acknowledge me, but what the hardcore vs casual argument was one of the best that have been done.
I just wanted to mention that you don’t have to look up a code online to activate “No Fail” mode in Rock Band 2, as Patrick said. You just have to select the “Extras” option off the main menu, choose “Modify Game,” check the box next to the “No Fail” option and you’re ready to rock. However, he is right that you are unable to save your progress, unlock achievements, or communicate with the Rock Central server, which allows you to post scores to the leaderboards and access “Battle of the Bands” content, when you have enabled the “No Fail” option. I don’t understand why Harmonix nested the “No Fail” option in the menus when it couldn’t have been the core feature of a “Party” mode, and I agree with Patrick that it makes no sense to expect the more casual audience, which would benefit from having “No Fail” turned on, would prefer to jump through a confusing series of menus to get the experience they desire. The core audience may have no problem with jumping through hoops, and, in fact, it’s often a cornerstone of mediocre games, but it’s unwise to expect the casual audience to feel the same way.
I’d like to thank the crew for getting their shit together this week, as last week’s show was terrible. Bring back John and Patrick as much as you can, as they have very interesting perspectives on gaming. Arthur’s still a git, but he’s more subdued than he has been in past episodes, which is a great improvement.
PLEASE PLEASE.I think the facebook forums are better, because people are less likely to be mean here.Just a thought. The Joystiq Facebook group is the only message broad I use .
Just wanted to stop in and say thanks for another awesome podcast! Also, Anthony can stop talking about Civ 4 now. His stories have gotten me to reinstall my copy and now I’m totally addicted again. THANKS ALOT I HAVE A JOB, DAMNIT. Have any of the “crew” played Civ Rev for the console? If so, what did you think? Thanks!
Fucking A to using the Unicorns for music. You Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone is one of the best albums ever.
uhhh. video games.
Who Will Cut… I just woke up.
Arthur i’m impressed…to take all that criticisim and come out the other end flying was really refreshing, well done.
Also I felt you input to this weeks podcast was lets just say a little less abrasive and you did not feel the need to get your back up so often.
Looking forward to the next episodes
keep up the good work guys
without doubt the Civ 4 stories are the highlight of these podcasts for me… I am almost in tears from laughing so much. How about a regular civ 4 section?
Big improvement over last week!
Just wanted to post and say that this episode was far better than last week’s. Arthur, I withdraw my comments from last week, please accept it as my apology. If every show was like this one, I could listen to it for years to come. Thanks for your hard work everyone, it is appreciated.
I think Anthony would have more fun with FEAR 2 if he played on Hard and used the Slow-Mo ability.
“You guys came close to loosing this subscriber this week.”
That would be no great loose.
Hey,
If you are looking for a good comments system to use instead of a forum, you should check out Intense Debate. It helps people follow their favourite commenters on this and other blogs and their rating systems so commenters who play fair can be rewarded. I’ve been testing it on a website I’m setting up for some friends and it seems kinda cool. They use it over at slashfilm.com as well.
http://intensedebate.com/
Just an idea I had after listening to your podcast today. Love the show, keep up the good work.
Cheers,
Tom.
In the opinion mailbag entry, I’d like to remind you guys about that Kevin Pereira video on Too Human trashing on Kevin VanOrd’s review. That was a professional getting on the broken soapbox to do that sort of thing…
Just wanted to take the time to say excellent, excellent podcast. Keep up the good work.
Excellent podcast! Rebel FM really has picked up where 1UP FM left off. Thanks!
Great podcast as always guys, great to get one that was over two hours. It’s wonderful that you guys have built up something of such quality so quickly after what happened.
On the topic of forums, I would like to see some here but it’s a lot of work to run them. I think keeping it 18 and over could be a good idea and maybe approving members before they can join. That sort of thing can always keep the workload down to start with. But whatever you guys do I am cool with.
Keep it up guys.
Good Ep. John Davison is genius.
On the forums thing though, I would really like some here. As you mentioned, it would be a lot of work in terms of modding. But the 18+ idea would certainly make the modding easier. Although I have to say, if I was under 18 I’d be put out, So maybe like a kiddie section?
Similar to the kiddie pool.. Where you never go in, because the little kids pee… but it’s there for them. Cause little kids drowning is bad. Even worse if they never get the chance to swim at all.
And Anthony, Since you claim to read all the comments. The problem with Neogaf being the main area of discussion for RebFM at least to me, is that I’m conditioned to the 1up forums. Where you can directly interact with the podcasters.
It feels strange to be talking about RebelFM stuff separate from E.S.G and seems less interactive with you guys. Obviously we can interact with the cast here, but it’s pretty unorganized, and that kind of hinders any intelligent debate.. that probably wouldn’t arise anyway but you never know.
I suppose I just like the idea of a E.S.G community.
Anyways keep preachin the rebellion.
Great job! Glad that last episode might turn out to just be a fluke of bad juju. I do admit, though, there were a few times I could sense the “dark side” threatening to burst its bonds and gush juvenile-cynic all over the podcast. Luckily, that didn’t happen.
Mic levels were great and John D. is such a welcome voice of experience and reason.
Welp, I am 2 hours in and loving it. The whole episode felt stepped up and improved, Chuf is on top form, and as for Arthur – what did I tell ya? My man is on the case! Nuff said.
A cage is hell and I am a rebel so I rebel.
GJ Rebel FM crew
I love that you guys make video games seem like a way more intellectual endeavor than most. The segments detailing a certian gameplay mechanic or theme are what really sets Rebel FM apart from the crowd.
Good episode, guys are getting better.
Anyone snag FEAR2 on Steam?
Where is this petition/donation/what ever to get the Brodeo reunion podcast? I WILL PAY FOR IT!
I could listen to an entire podcast of Anthony talking about Civ IV. This is why I’m pushing for more choice-oriented games for backlog.
Awesome show this week. The best one so far. Thank you!
I know you guys do a lot of Steam gaming so was just wondering if you were going to be setting up a Steam group or something?
Lovedc th podcast as always. Incredible work! Soon enough you will be taking over the world
the gfw reunion will never happen because those guys aren’t get things done kind of people. how many times did their lazy asses pay ryan scott a visit on lan party?…
Audio levels are amazing. I almost don’t need to play with the volume control anymore while I’m walking / on public transit.
Very enjoyable.
Awesome podcast guys. I love how your podcasts are longer than most, as they’re perfect for my hour and a half long bus rides to campus every day.
On the topic of forums, you’re right about how they’re just a bitch to keep up, but they’re definitely fun once you actually get a decent community going. If you’re worried about bandwidth, then may I point you to this offer I found on a forum I frequent:
http://www.dreamhost.com/
It couldn’t hurt to give it a try for a year, and if it doesn’t work out, then no big loss right? And if the forums do work out well, then I’m sure everyone here wouldn’t mind helping to chip in on paying for hosting fees.
Plus, on the issue of staffing the forums, you could also recruit mods to help keep order. I’ve personally got a bit of modding and forum running experience as I run a small community of my own. I definitely wouldn’t mind giving a hand if you choose to go down that road.
Either way, keep up with the awesome content guys. I’m eagerly waiting for next week’s show.
Great job actually listening to the comments here Arthur. Such an improvement from last weeks show.
Anthony’s Civ adventures are becoming more awesome every episode. As for future Backlog games, I noticed that both Second Sight and Splinter Cell Double Agent are on Steam…
Or we could just have everyone play Civ4.
Great episode, seems like you lot are settling into the new ‘format’.
These guided discussion topics are a lot of fun. I’m sure you guys have a few more broad sweeping subjects you’ll be tackling in upcoming podcats, but I’m really looking frward to the possibility of narrower discussions about games. Interface as a form of immersion, sound-design, pacing & scale, and art direction are subjects I’d love to hear get dissected in greater detail by you lot.
It would also be great to get some members of industry to chime in on these subjects. Maybe even steal people from outside the gaming industry that happen to be gamers; Play-wrights, film editors, sound-designers for TV/film.
Keep it up
Best episode yet. Patrick and John were great guests. I tend to zone out these days when John starts talking about the latest free MMO but it was still an interesting discussion.
I kinda feel the ‘where you can find us on the internet’ bit is a little tedious though. Hearing everyone recite their twitter every week is getting a tad old. Not a huge deal, just something I thought both last week and this week. Makes the end of the show a bit of a drag.
A++++++ WOULD LISTEN AGAIN
good job on this show, the guests were great and it was good to hear more chuff this time around. also good job on mellowing it out to arthur
@ChrisDubya: Don’t you think complaining about something as trivial as plugging their links at the end of the show is a little silly?
Really enjoyed this episode, always nice to hear Johm, Killzone 2 stuff was nice too. Looking forward to backlog. Keep it up fellas.
It should be required for Anthony to have a Civ 4 story every episode. It’s always the highlight of the show for me (I love the whole podcast). I would like to hear their thoughts on Civ Rev for consoles, I think it was a great game, even if it’s not as deep as the PC games.
Good show.
Regarding the MMO segment, one maybe interesting side story is, not so much the hardware resources, the amount of bandwidth they use. Now people playing them at home is their own business but there are a pretty big number of after-school kids, for example, who make their way to local libraries while they wait for parents to get home or to pick them up. Typically, these kids are on the public computers playing these MMOs, several of which apparently try to tie up as many ports as possible. Again, this probably isn’t a big deal at home but, for example, at the local library that I work at, our in-house network gets absolutely clogged from 3-5pm when the kids come in. I work in a fairly big Bay Area city that has an otherwise blazing fast network, too. So, now we are using budgetary funds (which is, in turn, taxpayer money) to figure out how to limit how to limit all of the bandwidth drain of these games. I think it’s great that these MMOs are providing free gaming to people but it’s not without some snags and problems.
I LOVE ANTHONY AND JOHN 10X MORE! they’re out of the closet about enjoying Killzone, so completely inspiring!
great episode
This was a truly epic episode. I especially loved the segment on casual vs. hardcore gamers.
Working for Gamestop has been a real trip over the last few years. Before the Wii really took off I would have identified a casual gamer as mostly a sports fan who dabbles in games every once in a while.
Now I have customers I would have never or at least rarely seen in my store.
“Do you have any good games with Monkeys?”
“Uh, sure I am sure I can find somethimg with Monkeys…. just give me a sec. How about Petz: Monkey Mischief.”
“Awesome! My kid will love this!”
All I can think in the back of my head is “possibly.. but probably not.”
Really I love casual gamers. The are more honest about what they want and do mot look down on you if you do not know the specs for a mage in Final Fantasy 2…
They are not an easy to peg bunch, and I think we need to take care to remember that casual gamers are not the ones making crappy casual games appear- its the developers and publishers who are trying to figure out how to cater to these people that are responsible for the games that are made.
Honestly I feel for them- casual gamers are a truly diverse and unknowable bunch.
