It was a good show, but with some somber times.
Show description:
Nick bids farewell to the Rebels as he heads off to a new job, freelancer Tyler Barber stops by for a discussion on “mature” content in games — and all that that implies — and impressions are shared of F.E.A.R. 2, GTA: Lost and Damned, Flower, and more.
The intro music was created by SXEZSKOZ and Bilithic, while all the other musical interludes were from Murder by Death’s excellent In bocca al lupo album. (I was wrong about the album the first time because I’m an idiot. Nick and I are also seeing them this weekend!)

Thanks!
east coast time vs west coast time sucks
Best of luck Nick, hope to keep seeing your opinion out there if at all legally possible.
Matt Milkowski and Ollie Hobson got their hand in the theme song too, props to them aka Bilithic.
damn son, quick with the edit!
Adios, Nick.
Good luck Nick, wish you all the best.
On a side note, I LOVE Murder by Death, definitely one of my favorite bands.
Sorry to see Nick go, he’s one of the best. Best of luck for the future.
Say it ain’t so Nick!??!?? I haven’t even started the podcast yet but i’m already depressed. Well best of luck to you, whatever you’re doing but DON’T Stop podcasting. There’s this amazing thing called the internet, and VoIP and all these amazing things that could lead to you podcasting from afar with the same crew……
Man, how can anyone be sad that Nick is going to start working at a job that will actually make him some money?
I will miss him on the show, and hope he gets to keep writing on games, but someone getting a job rather than just more people losing theirs is great news…
I can’t wait to find out what he is going to do!
I hope it is not serving fries at McDonalds!
WAT THE FUCK!? kidding. you were a favorite at 1up Nick. cheers to you and good luck.
BTW- Before Nick goes I want him to know that I do not hate Play magazine.
I do think Dave H. is a bit too willing to look past a games flaws if he enjoys it… anyone who disagrees with that needs to go back and read his Golden Axe review late last year.
He decided that was the game to try and attack other reviewers over? I played it after reading his review and the game was the worst pile of shit I have played in a long time.
Still, I like the general feel and lay out of Play, and like that they give kiddie type games a good bit of press too.
I think I like Play’s previews more than their reviews… but I do like the no score system. I also do not score games, and think reviews should be more about the words written about them than the score. That is something many publications simply do not understand.
Whatever… Nick probably will not read this anyway.
From one Nick to another, I’m really sad to hear Nick Suttner will be moving on. I doubt he’ll ever read this but I’d like to say how much I enjoyed listening to his thoughts on gaming. I always felt that, like a lot of the best writers at EGM/1up, Nick’s view of games is pure and resolute. I always liked his reviews- especially the Mirror’s Edge one. Still- working for Sony as a product evaluator? Best. Job. Ever. Congratulations and good luck! I’m so very jealous but inspired. Please don’t disappear under the cloak of game development.
Awesome more chip eating noises!
*sniff* I’m happy for you Nick but, damn! You will be missed. Best of luck to you.
Good luck Nick!
You’ll be missed!
thanks much guys. and don’t think i don’t read these comments. your support means a ton, and this is another very bittersweet evening for me.
Damn, what are we going to do without Fearless Leader?
Good luck Nick. Now that you’re working for Sony you need to drop subtle hints telling SCE to get another Legend of Dragoon made.
Thanks for all the dick talk. Got me hot as a mofo.
Salud Nick! Good one on getting a job, make sure you escape for a Rebel Reunion at some point though, eh?
Good show this week fellas and best of luck to Nick!
I really enjoyed the discussion on mature/adult content and themes in games. Arthur briefly mentioned that the topic of racism in games and I think he’ll be surprised to see it in The Lost and Damned. It’s not brought up in great length, but the Angels of Death (Hell’s Angels?) are often described as “those racist fucks!” whenever they’re mentioned by Lost members. When you’re sent an email by a fellow Lost member to check out their club website, their ‘About Us” page describes them as an all-white, Aryan brotherhood-like organization.
Damn, not gonna lie, Nick was the voice who got me into 1UP FM to begin with, and seemed like the guy I would most like to hang out with (no offense to the rest of you chumps).
Nick – if you’re ever in Nashville for some Godforsaken reason, hit me up.
Congrats on the job Nick, that sounds like something that is right up your alley. I’m really going to miss you on the show.
I hope you can maybe Skype in to Rebel FM from time to time when you have… time!
Best wishes!!
So, in response to your comments about whether or not various games are “respectful” when it comes to war, I’d like to point out something: I think that you can treat either a real war or a fictional one “respectfully” without necessarily adhering to an anti-war stance. That is, anti-war in the sense of “all war is bad and futile no matter what”. I’d argue that not only is there room for other views on the subject, there’s a need for a range of views to be presented.
As far as the idea of a game focused around the role of a combat medic goes, I think it could be quite interesting, but you should be aware that medics carry weapons and engage in combat along with everyone else. If they’re at a CSH (say it “cash”) or aid station they probably won’t be doing a lot of shooting, but if they’re attached to a unit in the field they’re going to be engaging in combat alongside everyone else. They’re not physicians and do not take the hippocratic oath.
Gah, again with the editing error.
Nick,
Thanks so much for mentioning Groov on this podcast! I also just remembered that if you go back and listen to I think the second Backlog on Shadow of the Colossus, you guys read one of my comments on the air, which I thought was awesome at the time. Now you’re talking about MY game. Incredible.
Anyway I wanted to wish you good luck at your next job at Sony. To everyone else — keep the rebellion going strong!
Julian
On the topic of indie games that cover homosexuality in more than a cursory fashion:
http://www.auntiepixelante.com/
Anna Anthropy is a lesbian indie game developer who’s responsible for the tear-your-hair out difficult and yet ultimately satisfying Mighty Jill Off. She always seems to slip lesbianism, as a theme, into her games. I don’t know if it’s ‘serious,’ but it certainly is playful and natural.
Also, a little interactive fiction bit: http://playthisthing.com/gun-mute
The discussion on the show was really good but one thing you guys didnt really touch on is how violence and sex are viewed differently throughout the world. You guys, for obvious reasons spoke from what would be a US perspective. I’m sure this discussion could be very very different if it was done in Europe or the Middle or Far east.
Great discussion though, much better then last week.
I’m surprised how sensitive you guys sound to this sort of content in games. Games are evolving and sensitivity to that evolution is just kinda backwards, honestly.
The sex toys via games/communication devices sounds more perverse than anything. Some people are just more perverted than others, so I guess opinions vary great with regards to this.
The racism argument in RE5 is ridiculous. The game is set in Africa, and by the looks of the environment it’s not South Africa. Of course it’s going to be all black people and if you take it out of context, then you’re doing the exact same thing the news media do, you are misunderstanding the game. The developers should not have to change their designs just to make you feel less uncomfortable.
Because I’m a douche:
All three Murder by Death songs you played are from In Bocca al Lupo, not Red of Tooth and Claw, dumbass.
Because I’m a fan:
I loved the show, keep up the good work.
Death Tank is the fucking shit! I would gladly pay 60$ for that motherfucker.
Good luck Nick. Visit the podcast in the future, so we can catch up with the new direction.
1up FM will affect the gaming culture and the industry, even after its gone. This podcast is one of the most intelligent discussions of gaming and when/if someone gets a great opportunity the good people will spread the message(s).
Murder by Death is amazing live. I went to the New York show and I can say you guys are definitely in for a treat. More bands should do these full album shows.
First off, congrats to Nick. Glad to see someone getting a job.
And secondly. Anthony, do you really have to eat on every goddamn episode? I feel like I’m getting some continuity with my podcasts from GFW to LAN Party and now on Rebel FM, but I’m not entirely too happy with it.
Seriously, though, ugh.
/crosses arms
/rests arms on keyboard
/sobs into arms for no apparent reason
Suggestion BOX:
Hey guys, keep up the awesome work. I just had a suggestion. Every podcast you guys mention new games you played or that are comming out (IE all the xbla/community games Nick mentioned in Ep7) It would be cool/helpful if there was a section on the website listing mentioned games…I find myself getting home and having to find the place in the podcast where you individually mention games you liked and writting them down so i can check them out. If would be even better if you had like a miny “twitter review” next to it listing one or two sentences why its good. ahh you should call it “suggestion box”. Cya
Sorry for flaming Anthony over the eating. It’s obvious that it was pervasive throughout the entire podcast and thus just not him. Please, stop. I beg of you. Please.
Please stop saying “like” so much. It diminishes what you are saying because it makes you sound less intelligent.
murder by death.
nice.
Good show, interesting discussion of maturity in games. Sorry to hear Nick’s leaving. Hope Tyler becomes a regular.
Should I know who Tyler Barber is??
Suggestion BOX:
Not good enough.
The muted burbling of the “cake or pie” quote (in the latest intro) fails to censor said phrase sufficiently.
I imagine there are arguments that suggest this phrase is contextually appropriate.
Given the history of the quote on 1upFM, and the successive tone of RebelFM, this might be true. As a rehetorical mantra it seemingly acknowledges the “eat” part of the site, but I don’t think this connection disguises the irrelevance of cake, and/or pie, to a gaming podcast.
It’s almost as if it’s there purely for shock value.
In fact; it’s inclusion week after week seems extremely forced — like the worst kind of cutesy attention seeking imaginable.
The more I ponder, the more it becomes apparent that it is simply an unnecessary, gratuitous reference that detracts from the podcast. This isn’t the kind of persona gaming podcasts need to be projecting if they’re to be taken seriously by mainstream outlets. It just feeds the stereotype already perpetrated by podcasts that feature video countdowns of the “top ten pie(s) in games.”
I’m actually all-for this kind of reference in gaming podcasts, but only if it can reach a little higher.
Filter effects just linger to call attention to the poorly intergrated reference. This isn’t an adequate representation of this kind of zany attitude. It’d be nice if we could get to the stage where a wide range of quotes could be included weekly without being met with infantile snickering. We’re better than this. Cinema shows just how well this kind of thing CAN be done, even if the format is quite different. The principle remains.
So get your act together, RebelFM.
For the time being you’re the only podcast pushing the cake or pie envelope, and you need to do it better. It’s just bullshit!
I’m unsubscribing, and will no longer be listening to your podcast.
I, for one, think it’s hilarious that so many people are SO up in arms over a Portal reference in the intro. Hey, I thought it was stupid, too, but you don’t hear me writing Letters to the Editor about it, and “I Say Good Day, Sir.” Videogame fanatics can be a funny bunch.
Overall, very nice episode with the exception of the gratuitous use of “gratuitous”.
I don’t know where else to post a discussion suggestion for the next podcast, so I’m going to post it here.
I just stumbled across this article.
“Are Games Too Expensive?”
http://www.edge-online.com/features/valve-are-games-too-expensive#expensivegames
This information is from Gabe Newell and there are some interesting numbers in there. Hope you guys can find the time to discuss this issue as I would love to hear everyone’s opinion on these numbers. Keep up the good work!
Farewell Nick, your hobo beard will always be missed. lolz. Good luck with Sony.
no more backlog for nick? good luck with your future endeavors though.
I did have to fast foward the part where the show discussed Fear 2. I do like the fact you are not currently part of an online review site. In the sense you don’t have to edit or bleep out foul language. Just remember all the gore in the game wheter its respectable or not, its still just a game. The explosion of heads just helps me know the enemy is dead.
I’m sick of saying good bye. Take them easy, Nick.
You get better and better…. it is really refreshing to hear some more serius discussion about game themes and concepts, discussions which are normal to literature and film and are needed to help gaming evolve.
SUGGESTION:
Use the description/lyrics information in the file to link to games and other stuff you talk about.
Please never try serious discussion about morality ever again.
The Witcher, yes it’s so sexist that you get playing cards for every woman you sleep with. Because pure and innocent women can’t ever feel pleasure at making love; it’s purely a male thing to want to partake in that. Really if the male character was a woman and the playing cards were of male lovers, would you guys still be up in arms? No; 5:1 is that you’d be all about sexual liberation.
Call of Duty, I’m sorry it didn’t have sufficient meaning in your war. Because having a enlisted American accountant shooting the daylights out of an enlisted Japanese/German grocer has to have some deep profound principle that makes it all better. The meaningless nature of the killing fit perfectly in my opinion, it’s a war, two sides are slaughtering each other; if you’re a general it probably says something to you; but if you’re a soldier that’s all you see.
Best of luck at Sony, Nick.
As for the replacement, can you guys please get Patrick Klepek back on as Nick’s temporary replacement? Or how about Ben Fritz, formerly of Variety’s gaming blog?
And as Leigh Alexander would be sure to tell you, there are games that tackle sexuality, but they’re rarely in the mainstream. Those conversations, mature (in the case of Persona 4) or not (H-games and dating sims), are taking place.
Whats with the loud moaning sound towards the end of the podcast? Think it was around 6 minutes left. I feel very confident saying it wasn’t any of them…
Good show, guys, but could you dial back the heavy-handedness a bit? I want more to laugh like a retard at. Oops, I mean “special needs person.”
Please, don’t chew chips while podcasting.
Hey guys, just wanted to say that you are doing great. Keep up the chip chewing, the portal references in the intro, anything that pisses people off. Do anything on the internet, someone will say that it is not good enough. Fuck ‘em all!
As for Nick leaving I am going with Jayslacks, I am sick of saying goodbye :’(
I think that you guys asked for a site that reviews XNA games. Here’s one that I like:
http://www.xnplay.co.uk/
Arthur, could you stop swearing please? It’s quite evident that there is a lot of intelligent, insightful critcism about games obscured beneath the acrid layer of unmoderated verbal effluvia.
Has anyone seen this fan made Half-Life 2 movie? Its actually quite good considering the budget. There isn’t much of a story so anyone who does not know the HL2 storyline would be confused, but I enjoyed it for the youtube bit it was. They make good use of models, and the clips from the upcoming part 2 make it look like it may be worth keeping up with. http://kotaku.com/5152938/half+life-2-the-short-movie
Anthony, I saw MDB in like 2003 with a buddy of mine up at Whistler. I hadn’t ever heard of them before (the band I was up there for was Against Me!) but I was pleasantly surprised by them. They were a very haunting sound and I even bought their CD. Even rocked a MDB trucker hat for a year or so afterward. I know how “douchey” of me.
Well thanks for the faithfulness in making the podcast and I hope you have a great week. Oh, and one more thing. Is PAX this year only going to be on the east coast? I missed the crew last year and would love to attend a live podcast of yours (like 1up Yours I mean Listen up.
Damnit, I wish there was a preview button, I wanted to see if I could use html so I didn’t bother to edit it. Oh well.
Nick,
good luck with everything, I’m not going to lie I listened to many of 1up podcasts specifically because you were on there and because of shane, but I’ve grown to like everyone else too. I found that our game tastes were “most alike” and I’ll miss you from the main show, I hope you can do the game club one because I love the in depth you guys get on it.
thanks for the free entertainment as always
RE: Remote Masseuse Conversation
I can’t say I believe it has ever happened, but Xbox Live Sex is built into the service. In the standard Video Chat interface, the trigger buttons control the vibration on the controller of the person with whom you are chatting. I believe that the left trigger works the small motor and the right trigger does the heavy motor. Plus, you get video chat at the same time so you can view the unsatisfied look on your partner’s face as a result of your gleeful button mashing (like in real life).
There, I just saved you two and a half bucks. You’re welcome.
Also, good luck at the new job, Nick. I defended your A+ Braid review all over the internet and think you’re a cool dude.
I just wanted to say thank you for even mentioning the idea of exploring homosexuality in video gaming, I wish there was more intelligent conversation online regarding that particular topic (but that’s because I identify as “queer,” so maybe I should take up the discussion myself and run with it). It’s really nice to see gamers able to have that kind of deep conversation, as well as the over-head topic of maturity and defining it in our hobby. Thank you for taking what once was 1Up Yours/FM and taking it to the next level; you’ve just made me a listener for life.
And Nick, congrats on the new gig, though hopefully you’ll waltz by for a chat every now and again!
Going to miss Nick, always one of my favorite voices. Also, the guest this week was great, hope he shows up as a guest in the future as well.
My continued thanks, guys. You rule, quite very much.
Now let us have some cake… or STFU!!!
re: games with gay characters.
I think The Longest Journey deserves some props for its portrayal of gay characters.
Justin Bieber could well be my favorite! He is totally adorable!
Mini cooper s review…
