Rebel FM — Episode 8 — 02/26/09

And this weeks episode was so well planned. Please join the usual crew of Anthony Gallegos, Arthur Gies, and Philip Kollar, and our special guests Tyler Barber and Robert Ashley as we demonstrate exactly how off-topic a video game podcast can get! This weeks music is courtesy of Death From Above 1979(Romantic Rights), Evergreen Terrace (Chaney Can’t Riff Quite Like Helmet), and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (Young Adult Friction).

This is probably why there was never any alcohol consumed during GFW Live.

  1. More yip yappin’, jaw-jackin’, and chimp chattin’! Don’t be afraid to go off of the beaten path and deviate from the occasionally very sterile and rigid confines of the ‘podcast to-do list’. Non-linearity is good.

  2. Aaron says:

I lost my shit during the God of War nonsense. Bravo.

  3. Lou says:

great show!!! the cat is awesome btw she always seems to meow at the right moment to get in the show

  4. Sander says:

Hey guys, I plugged you on my show. Maybe you’ll get another listener. My only fear is that you’ll take our only listener from us because Ep8 was the “best podcast that didn’t have Shawn Elliott on it” I’ve ever heard.

  5. Mitch says:

Don’t let your perceptions of what the audience wants stop you from going off on tangents. I thought this episode was by far the best one yet, and it was largely because of how much you guys were clearly having. I thought the off-topic digressions were HILARIOUS, and you shouldn’t try to stay away from those because you think the audience wants to hear about games and only games.

Actually, I think some of the “worst” moments of the show are when it feels like you guys are trying to be too scripted, or to stay on topic. If you have to reign it in a little bit, that’s fine. But don’t ever feel like your listeners don’t want to hear about childhood anecdotes or crazy stories. That’s largely what makes the show so great.

  6. Mitch says:

Oh, and have Robert Ashley on as often as either of you can stand it. A Life Well Wasted is BRILLIANT, but his personality doesn’t come through as much through his interviews with other people as it does bullshitting with friends.

  7. Zak S says:

Best podcast yet, Arthur needs to loosen up and let shit go. This is the closest any podcast has got to the glory days of GFW Radio. More Robert Ashley!

  8. Patrick says:

This episode was all kinds of awesome.

  9. Rusty Wang says:

I don’t know why, but hearing Anthony giggle makes me feel are warm and gooey inside.

  10. vanilla says:

    ah, memories of GFW podcast…
thank you guys for making me look crazy on bus/train trips…

  11. jon says:

Robert Ashley is not dead bring that mother fucker on every week.

He is a Texan pussy if he rejects.
Love the show and that quiet ass texan

    Great episode.
    It was almost GFW
    By the Way

    FAT PENIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  12. jono says:

I have been subscribing to this just because I knew Robert Ashley would be a guest at one time or another and he didn’t disappoint.

  13. Gabe says:

If this continues it’d be like 1upFM and GFW got drunk prom night and didn’t have an abortion.

  14. jon says:

    hey Arthur

    Fat Penis

  15. jon says:

I think this was the best show yet. I loved, I don’t care what the posters have to say I want to hear what the “Stars” have to say Robert Ashley V.S. CIV IV

  16. Zace says:

Killer show. Really enjoyed this weeks show. You should always feature someone from Texas…..

  17. Aimes says:

Best bloody podcast I’ve listened to since the end of GFW. Loved it so much, Max Chill makes such a great addition to the crew and I hope he makes a regular return.

Keep up the tangental efforts, best off topical discussion ever. Listening to it again, thats how much I freaken enjoyed it!

  18. casual_alcoholic says:

Best episode yet guys, Robert Ashley needs to be on every podcast from now on.

  19. Chris says:

Please have Robert on again! This episode reminded me so much of the old GFW radio episodes. Do more like this in the future!

  20. [...] I drove back home to Sacramento, pretty long two hour drive but I was listening to episode 08 of Rebel FM, probably the funniest episode I have ever listen to, and the 404 288 was also very, VERY funny.  [...]

  21. Joe says:

I have to say that this is probably the best episode of any podcast I’ve heard; the digressions aren’t something to stop. I really enjoy the music in Civ4 too, and I’ve started the game up just to listen to the menu music as well.

  22. Not Ryan Cabrera says:

    FUCKING AWESOME.

  23. Kirathian says:

Someone has finally put how awesome God of War is in easy to understand drunken english.

+1 more vote for Robert to STAY.

  24. Guillaume says:

Greatest episode ever. Rober needs to stay.

  25. some_internet_person says:

    What an awesome episode!

I’m a ex gfw fan and it was incredible listening to robert again.

Fantastic hearing the lads cry with laughter. i was laughing along as well.

Robert should stay as a fixture to the team.

    thanks for episode :D

  26. undocumented says:

Best episode yet. Robert Ashley was amazing and correct drop the pretense and don’t talk about videogames.

  27. TheLosKyle says:

Getting paid to listen to this podcast at work was phenomenal. The worst part was having to stifle my laughter so my co-worker sitting 10 feet away from me wasn’t annoyed.

I’m making my girlfriend listen to it thats how much enjoyed this one.

  28. catapult says:

I LOVED IT! There needs to be a dedicated off-topic podcast. I agree with those who say it was like the best GFW Radios. You got a great mix of serious gaming talk (business predications) with the awesome OT stuff. As todd zuniga would say, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!

  29. Matt DeLoach says:

Paul McCartney has always been my favorite Beatle. Because he never sacrificed beautiful melodies over political messages. Maybe, his lyrics were not as contervastal but his melodies were top-notch.

When I first put Chaos and Creation in and heard Fine Line… I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Nigel Godrich (Radiohead’s Producer) really did wonders for Paul.

Oh, and Robert is right, Ram is a fantastic album.

  30. Rossco says:

    Best episode yet.
Please more GFW and less 1UP FM.

  31. Matt DeLoach says:

    Make that controversial. :p

  32. ohman says:

Great episode, you gotta have Robert Ashley sometime. The guy is the funniest person ever.

  33. Michael says:

Great show, had me rolling while I am at work! Robert Ashley is so incredibly funny, he needs to rip on games more often like he did with Killzone 2 (I think that’s what he was emphasizing the machismo in, anyway).

  34. Schlook says:

This was awsome, I suggest you keep Bobbito on forever, just feed him beer and pitch off toppic shit to him and just go with his flow because that guy is funny.

I have been listening to your podcast since you started and this was more fun than usualy.

It sort of feels like Anthony is trying to come of as serious because he wants to make good impressions on people who might heir him but (who he guesses and hopes are listening) when GFW was happening he had a jobb so he didnt care and could rock the fun ish.

English is not my first language.

  35. raulroman says:

    Robert motherfucking Ashley

    that is all

  36. dodger says:

nice podcast i like when you guys go off topic, besides hear you guys laugh hard and often makes me laugh too… a really nice show, i hope you do this a little more often.

  37. Andrew says:

Best episode yet. No need to stay on topic.

  38. Greg says:

Personally, I dislike “drinking” podcasts. I haven’t listened yet, but reading this, I’m not looking forward to it. I know a lot of people find it entertaining, listening to drunken people, but I can’t stand it. Please don’t become Diggnation.

  39. CodyH says:

    Best Podcast Ever.

  40. Big Paul says:

Loved the podcast, I’ve listened to every episode so far and had thought 2 was your best.. but this one out shined it by far. Between homage to Texas (my home state) and listening to your battles against monkey-rage-depression and joblessness I had a great time. I was laughing so loud at work I had to stop the podcast 4 or 5 times for fear of getting yelled at. Keep it up, and keep it coming.

  41. Big Paul says:

Another note: Arthur, if you could change the background color of the comments it would really help color deficient readers like myself out. I’m partly colorblind and black on gray gives me no contrast with which to read the comments. I have to highlight the page just to read it, quite cumbersome.

  42. TheToiletduck says:

    Arthur is awesome. Don’t change

  43. Iceveiled says:

Robert Ashley is hilarious. Please have him on the podcast again and make him drink a lot of booze.

  44. Kyle Wright says:

Wow, this episode was hilarious. I feel like I can really relate to you guys, and you all remind me so much of me and my friends when we get together and talk. By the way, excellent music selections this week. Whoever decided to put DFA1979 in there, you deserve a high five.

OH AND MAKE REBEL FM T-SHIRTS! I will buy one to support you guys. =D

  45. Joel G says:

I finally got around to listening to this at work today.

Best episode yet. As someone else here has probably already said, when you guys are laughing and having fun, you can be sure your audience is.

    Robert Ashley = Stud.

  46. Gib says:

Dude, more episodes like this! You guys have the potential to notoriously be the funniest gaming podcast out there! You wanna talk about recognition! So from now on don’t let that Arthur guy be such a tight wad and keep Robert Ashley on.

  47. Malequal says:

What a great episode, so much fun to listen to. Feel like the listeners got to know you guys a little better, got a few laughs, and you know, listen to some gaming talk. Keep up the stellar work. Love from the UK!

  48. Regs says:

This was an awesome ep. I didn’t realise how much I missed hearing Robert. You should do whatever is necessary to keep him coming back every week. Be it Sexual favours, or whatever.

  49. nick says:

    MORE Bobbito!!!

  50. lmao says:

When arthur speaks = buzzkill. Nothin against you man, you just need to chill out sometimes. Also, Tyler AND especially Bobito needs to come back again. Good show guys.

  51. Jace101 says:

This episode was epic. I was laughing at loud to this podcast, which some what embarrassing since I was traveling to work and received some interesting looks from people.

If your going to go off-topic you might as well do it with style. And if not then just go opposite like Rebel FM.

  52. Andrew D says:

Hey guys. I don’t know if you heard about the crazy snow storm that hit the Eastern Seaboard but this weekend’s Rebel FM helped me shovel out 2 foot snow drifts in my drive way. I’m sure my neighbors thought I was out of my mind laughing to myself at the lovely discussion about a certain 911 call.

  53. Shoki says:

Now that was a great show!

  54. Josh R says:

Great stuff. Some people get worked up because all they want is games, but poeple get upset no matter what you do. If the entire audience was that way, Geekbox wouldn’t be in the top 20 every time I’ve checked the itunes video games podcast rankings.

  55. Cronson says:

OMG! Such a funny episode! Get Robert Ashley on there everytime!

    “x button equals chimp attack.”

  56. Defuniak says:

    Jeez, give Arthur a break!

This episode is fantastic (and it is!) because it’s the exception and not the norm. If RebelFM became a show where everyone talked about funny anecdotes instead of games, it wouldn’t have the same appeal.

1UP Yours had their poolside episodes where people got to loosen their ties, and this episode was a lot like that and everyone clearly had fun! Doesn’t mean I want every episode to be like this one though.

  57. J.H. says:

Robert Ashley needs to be on (and drinking) every week. Best episode yet.

  58. Bob says:

    More of this plz!
This was the best ep ever.

  59. murdowg says:

just what i was going to say best epp ever robert needs to be on more offen and cat talk is were its at love it hahahahaa

  60. BakerJosh says:

This is one of my favorite episodes ever. Thanks! I had multiple laugh-out-loud moments. Thanks again!

  61. sebasta says:

OMG! Such a funny episode! Get Robert Ashley on there everytime!

    “x button equals chimp attack.”.

  62. Paul says:

Stop. Fucking. Chewing. Every. Damn. Episode. Stop. Just. Stop.

Seriously, out of the five or six podcasts I listen to you are the only podcast that has someone crunching away each and every week.

And yes, this was a pretty funny episode and Robert is hilarious. Other than that chewing . . . I’m all for the show.

  63. Joey says:

So what are the chances of bringing Robert Ashley on next week? That guy was awesome

  64. Scott says:

I love listening to Rebel FM each week but since all the 1up junk went down I really miss the GFW podcast. This weeks episode felt like it was right out of the old GFW archives. I forgot how much fun it makes my commute when I am listening to Robert Ashley and his off topic rants. I love Rebel FM, but a little GFW mixed into the formula once in a while never hurts. Thanks guys.

  65. Scott says:

I almost forgot. Arthur, dont let these comments get to you man. I think people are hating on you because you dont have the 1up claim to fame. Just keep being you and eventually people will get over it. I remember reading posts about how much people hated listening to Nick S. at one time.

  66. Baltimore says:

Oh boy….that was…um…I don’t know what to say. Go Texas?

  67. CooperativePeon says:

Great show guys. I enjoyed the random conversations. Even though they were off topic, they still hovered around video games. I enjoyed this show as much as any podcast I’ve heard in awhile.

    Thanks.

  68. JonB says:

This show had me totally cracking up, and, like many others have said, feeling like a bit of a freak for walking down the street laughing out loud.

The Killzone 2 rant/review was great, and it’s funny how it’s just a few elements that really tip the balance as to whether you like or hate a game. For me, the dual pistols in L4D makes me feel like I’m in a John Woo movie (about zombies!), and currently that has me pretty much in love. On the other hand, the fucking camera in Splinter Cell Double agent can suck my cock, and I got rid of that game as fast as I could. I’d love to hear some good stories on where you split from the supposed conventional wisdom because some aspect of a game drove you insane.

Keep up the good work – I really do like your regular format, and now I’m SUPER curious to see how next episode with go since 1-7 with Nick were all the same & the first one without him was totally out of control. Good luck!

  69. Koops12 says:

    Great episode guys.

The conversation about the chimp almost made me burst into laughter during my calculus class. I tried to hide it as a cough, but I think my teacher might have noticed.

Please bring Robert back to the show as often as possible. Oh, and more Civ4 stories from Anthony as well.

  70. J K says:

This was a ridiculously good episode, the best yet by far! Like someone on Qt3 said, you should kidnap Bobbito and force him to be on every Rebel FM.

  71. Mitch Dyer says:

This is the most off topic mess I’ve ever heard. And all I can think is “Aw, fuck yeah” — this was an instant classic. :)

  72. Steve says:

I can’t believe nobody’s commented on the fact that Robert Ashley is in fact Cory Feldman!! Compare their voices, people. Stop the charade!!

  73. Jenny says:

Just listened to episode 8 and I loved it. Not to be sappy, but you all had me laughing so hard at a time where I really needed some cheering up. Made my day – thank you! I think the show worked so well because everyone seemed so comfortable just going with the flow, and there still was much gaming discussed. Some gaming podcasts try too hard to stay on topic and that can disrupt the natural banter of the hosts. Keep up the great work!

  74. Jose says:

HILARIOUS!!! I love the tangents! Robert is comedic gold. you guys are awesome keep up the good work!!

  75. Adam says:

Having Robert on acutally made the off topic great! That was GFW-level gold.

  76. Andrew says:

Arthur is great. He does sometimes come across as though he only has good things to say about one particular console this generation, which makes him predictable. On the other hand, he is often the most well-spoken member of the podcast.

    Make Robert permanent!

  77. Aaron says:

    Robert Ashley>Arthur

  78. Pete says:

Best episode ever! I haven’t laughed that hard while listening to a podcast since the glory days of GFW Radio, thanks guys!

  79. Steve B says:

Wow!! Laughed my ass off – Great show, made my day @ work, well ok I guess. Bring Robert Ashley back sooooooon.

  80. Aaron M says:

That was fucking boss. Who needs video games when you can have Texas and… chimps?

Honestly, having the stuff branch out from games into life is good listening. And hilarious. Hope to hear Robert on the podcast again soon, ey?

  81. Beta76 says:

That was probably the best ep. yet. Robert Ashley is right when he said it should be more about gaming culture.Chuf how did you not tap Tina, while you were at EGM? :) Thanks for the great show.

  82. Docta Joe says:

This is the BEST Episode by far guys. Fucking awesome, that was hilarious. Keep up the awesome work. Robert was jokes too.

  83. koolaid says:

Loved the latest podcast. TEXAS FTW.

  84. Stalker says:

Alcoholic beverages should be mandatory now that you guys produced this greatness. Epic podcast early on, good job, I definitely was not expecting this gem.

  85. Nahual says:

Missing Nick, but this was still the best episode by far, can only imagine how good it would have been had he still been in.

I hope you keep it up, even if yours is the best, formulaic podcasts are still a dime a dozen. Personally i would much rather you talk about a gamer’s way of life and experiences with the news, etc. as a background rather than have that be the main thing, it’s what made me willing to trade one Brodeo episode for every other podcast on 1UP whenever they skipped it.

  86. Nahual says:

Seriously, though, I would pay as much as a WoW subscription if you kept making gold like this episode.

  87. erik says:

Fantastic podcast, not only the usual high quality games topics, funny as hell. First time I’ve laughed out loud during a podcast in a long time, earned me more than one odd look on the bus, keep up the great work and bring back robert ashley..

  88. Nick says:

What was the book the guys talked about that we should have read in highschool?

  89. B says:

Loved this one! There were a number of times I couldn’t stop laughing. You guys make my commute much more interesting. =)

  90. cuzi says:

    best show yet.

  91. Oxide the Aussie says:

I was listening ot RFM when Robert Ashley and Anthony were bantering like the old days and I……..”Jizzed in my pants!”
    :-P
    Best.Show.Yet

  92. Avyette says:

I like this episode. I did laugh a lot but… Robert totally took over the podcast and well, it would have been nice if there was a lot more gaming content. Robert wasn’t quiet about anything and the more on it went, the more I got annoyed even while laughing. I really liked the music segment. A follow-up question I have to all of you, is what music soundtracks from video games do you like to listen to? Even when you aren’t playing a game?

  93. TheDiabolical says:

lmao! Rebel FM could become the new Brodeo!!

  94. Nightshifter says:

Most epic ‘cast ever. Made that night at work fun and laughter filled. Thanks =D

  95. Mikes says:

Best Rebel FM yet – laughed out loud for the first time in ages listening to a podcast. Robert Ashley should be on more often!

  96. PeterD says:

    Best episode yet.

  97. I’ve been listening to this podcast since Episode 1. As a big fan of gaming podcasts (and a current/former 1up staff supporter), Rebel FM has taken a place amongst my Top 3 favorite podcasts to listen to.

I agree with everyone else in saying, this is probably the funniest episode of anything I’ve heard in quite a while. Going off topic keeps it fresh and really adds a more comedic value to the show. I couldn’t stop listening because I wanted to hear more. Keep up the good work guys!

  98. Antknee says:

Great show! As a Battlefield Bad Company player and supporter since release, it’s great to hear some buzz about it, even if it comes so late. Seriously, this was, in my humble opinion, the best multiplayer shooter released in 08!

  99. Nadger says:

Best podcast yet. Totally GFW style, i hope the rest of your podcasts keep this style.
