Game Club Delays!

If you saw the post on Game Club getting delayed yesterday, you’re probably wondering where it is today. Unfortunately, I don’t have the good news you’ve been waiting for. Due to my stupid body deciding to remain hella sick as well as some crazy schedules for the other Game Club participants, we’re pushing the Call of Cthulhu Game Club vol. 3 to next week. However, we are going to try and have Game Club in its own RSS feed by then!

We will, of course, be recording Episode 9 of Rebel FM tomorrow night. On this week’s episode, former MTV Multiplayer writer and former boss-of-Phil-Kollar Patrick Klepek will be joining us once again along with another special guest who I won’t name yet. Here’s a hint though: The topic this week will be music and videogames, beginning with a discussion of the trip Anthony and I took to see Video Games Live this weekend in Oakland. We’ll also be doing some talk about WonderCon and also on what games we’ve been playing. Not all of the games below will be covered this week, but as a teaser, here’s a look at everything the Eat-Sleep-Game crew picked up in a recent new game shopping spree:

NEW GAMES

(Not pictured: copies of Star Ocean: The Last Hope and Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection for the Xbox 360 and a digital copy of Dawn of War 2 I got on Steam.)

Also user Ronin478 sent us this completely awesome Rebel FM background that we wanted to pass on to you. We’re not sure what it all means, but as an English major, I can certify that this image is chock full of symbolism and hidden meaning. Study it carefully.

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  2. Rick says:

The background isn’t on the page, at least not for me.

  3. Greg says:

This is actually good for me, since WonderCon set me way behind in Call of Cthulhu and I haven’t caught up yet.

  4. Monty_V says:

Oh, Way of the Samurai, been meaning to pick that one up myself. Do I smell a future backlog/GameClub segment?

  5. casual_alcoholic says:

Well shit happens, I started reading actual Lovecraft after beating this game. I’m currently reading a shadow of Innsmouth, it’s pretty sick to see how heavily they actually took from the lore and didn’t improvise.

  6. Sammo says:

No problems. Sometimes we have to wait, which is fine. Casual_Alcoholic, if you want some really really good suggestions on Lovecraft stories, let me know. I own everyone one of his stories, even the ones he edited for other people, and all of the Lovecraft inspired mythos.
Anyways, I stopped at the end of the boat level.
In Killzone 2, I am almost done with the entire game on hard. I am on the last level, the “dreaded” final fight in the library…or whatever it is. The fight wouldn’t be so bad if Rico wasn’t a complete idiot and I have to revive him all the time. Reminds me of Dom in the original Gears of War on insane (or whichever the final difficulty was). Constantly having to revive him and getting killed in the process. I do love the game however, and I am also a level 7 in the multiplayer.

  7. Doogie2K says:

It clearly means that the artist is a Sony fanboy. Circle and X buttons? Dead giveaway. Plus, the contours are much closer to Dual Shock than any other controller.

  8. Doogie2K says:

(And because the Internets have broken sarcasm detectors, yes, that was a joke.)

  9. Kush says:

I must say that I am very happy to see Way of the Samurai in that pic…I loved that game (and the sequel) and hope you enjoy the game as well. Possible question for you guys if you read this: Is there any chance that Way of the Samurai 3 will get a U.S. release?

  10. Crunks says:

    Get well soon man.

    PS. Bring back Robert Ashley.

  11. Jonathan Posch says:

I second the return of Robert Ashley. While his A Life Well Wasted podcast was awesome, it wasn’t as awesome as episode 8. I was actually crying because of half the shit he said, crying from laughter. Also, Anthony needs to tell more stories. Make that a segment or something, so damned funny.

Also, Way of the Samurai is amazing.

  12. Righto says:

    Tommy Tallarico?

  13. Vince says:

Robert Ashley and alcohol should be permanent fixtures of all future podcasts.

  14. Nice banner. Are we perhaps any closer to knowing exactly what it is we’re rebelling against? Between the angel-skull and current health crisis, are we to assume it’s life?

  15. Donniey says:

I second the Tommy Tallarico guess

  16. Chrespo says:

@ Vince: Agreed! Ashley was hilarious last episode!

  17. KindGalaxy says:

Robert Ashley was right, we’re all gamers, we are all ‘in the know’, what is really great for us, as non-podcasting, non-press gamers is hearing the fucked up streaming consciousness of you lot, give the pretense that gaming podcasts are about games up and make some fucking magic!

I want a podcast that introduces Anthony to alcohol, a 2 hour long podcast, start him with a beer, then bring on a bottle of Vodka or something, and as the podcast continues, every time the cats make a noise he has to take a shot, the final minutes should be most entertaining.

  18. Jace101 says:

Thank god you guys are delaying. I haven’t even reached the last stop point. I’m just about to save the girl.

  19. Jon says:

So Is Robert Ashley going to be back on the show?

He needs to , You guys need him.

  20. Randy says:

    Awesome background.

  21. Kevin E. says:

aw man you guys got the 360 version of SF4, i hope you have one of the pads cuz if not the 360 contorller might bread and it isnt that good either.

  22. thedude says:

:( Cthulhu podcast is the one I’m looking forward to far more than anything else. :(

  23. ThePumKinMan says:

I loved Robert Ashley on the last Rebel FM, but I did honestly want to hear a predictions podcast, where the conversation didn’t get derailed every minute and a half.

    but man I miss GFW.

  24. Dave says:

Way of the Samurai would make an awesome single-episode Backlog with it’s shortness and abundance of plot branches. Hearing the group compare and constrast their individual paths and experiences through a game is always a neat part of the excersize, and this game would really lend itself to that kind of conversation.

  25. Jon says:

I’m fine with that, I haven’t been on any boat rides yet so this will actually give me time to catch up :)

  26. Rick says:

I haven’t even seen the sewers yet. Everyday I see the first episode on my Zune, not listened too, mocking me with my inadequacies as a gamer.

  27. James-Kond says:

    Rick:
You know I kind of had the same problem, I couldn’t get past a certain point and so I didn’t want to listen to the podcast yet, but I broke down and just did it.
And because I listened to it I think: Dude, this is totality awesome, and starting playing more trying to come as far as what the where talking about =D

  28. Demtor says:

Time to read those HP Lovecraft short stories I’ve been meaning to get to.

  29. kruton says:

i LOVED the show w/ max chill. robert NEEDS to be a regular guest!!!!

  30. Curtis Sell says:

I think I know who it is… It is likely Tommy Tellerico. (srry spelling) However ya he is the most likely because he is the VGL head so… well see soon I guess.

  31. Paul says:

Videogames and music. Hmm, videogames would be on topic, so it’s not Robert. Hmmmmmmm . . .

  32. Way of the Samurai is a great little niche game, but doesn’t conform much to the multi-part Game Club style. Would be great for a one-off episode, though. Just have everyone play through it as much and as many times as they want and then discuss it for a single ep and move on.

  33. raulroman says:

ALWW only comes out once a month, so I think he should be a ‘surprise guest’ on every episode of Rebel FM. Tommy Tallarico loves himself too much, while the work he does is pretty rad, he still comes off as a douchebag to me.

    FUCK YOUR BREAKS

  34. Ben says:

If you guys hope to keep listeners you really ought to get your shit together and keep to a release schedule. What day does your podcast come out exactly? It gets later in the week every time.

Why not ask Gamers with Jobs how they manage to put a podcast out without fail every Wednesday (well, my Wednesday).

  35. Casey says:

    Sooooo….about those donations people made…

  36. Re: Ben and Casey

Rebel FM comes out Wednesday evenings and has only been delayed to a Thursday once, so I’m not sure where you’re getting the idea that it seems later every week. In fact, it will be out tonight. (More or less) every Wednesday without fail.

And the donations were great for buying equipment and paying for some random stuff as we continue going, but they’re not enough to pay for full-time employment. Even if they were (and as thankful as we were for them), there’s no getting around sickness and an insane schedule from the Area 5 guys, who technically aren’t benefiting from our donations though we would be hesitant to put out an episode of Game Club without them.

  37. Ben says:

Thanks for the info. I don’t know why I thought the show was scheduled for your Tuesdays…

The audio quality is loads better since the first show (and the laptop mic incident). Maybe you should open donations so that a mic could be purchased for the cat though. Having random feline input could be interesting, especially if it’s prone to fits as claimed.

  38. Ben says:

I’m also not getting the wallpaper just a image placeholder. Please fix it guys, I love the show and want to be able to have this as a wallpaper at work.

  39. Odinez says:

I was falling behind anyway. I still haven’t reached the boat ride. Hopefully I can push through this weekend.

  40. Spirit-of says:

Good deal, I fell off the Cthulhu wagon after getting hooked on my 800 point version of Braid and finishing up Flower. I’m currently trying to get thru the Marsh Refinery. Nice to know that I have a few extra days.

  41. Sleeping Lesson says:

Blarg!! I’ve been waiting for the Game Club! Dang dang. Are we supposed to play more for next week, or do I have to sit around and forget what we’ve played?

  42. Chris says:

Did Klepek ever stop to think that maybe the reason people never went to MTV Multiplayer is because it was….MTV?

I know I personally refused to read the site because it was an MTV branded product.

I refuse to support such a shitty company. A site like Multiplayer that wasn’t MTV? I’d be all over it.

  43. Imbarkus says:

Okay guys, while you are waiting for the next game club, play Eversion:
    http://tinyurl.com/9ey34y
It’s like Super Mario Bros. meets the Call of Cthulhu.

  44. Casey says:

I was being smarmy, thanks for another excellent podcast though, guys. I really like what you and Area5 Media are doing.

  45. Andrew says:

Yeah, I’m not getting the Wallpaper either. In Firefox I’m just getting the alt-text “rebel fm background” and in IE I’m getting the lovely “red x” image placeholder.

On a more positive note, keep up the great work!

  46. thedude says:

I just finished Cthulhu. First, thank you for putting me on to such a great game. It’s buggy as hell, it’s not perfect, but damned if I’ll ever forget this game. It’s great.

Second, damn your eyes, damned your lying eyes for having no podcast for me this week. Damn your eyes your rotten creatures of the deep.

My name it is Sam Hall an’ I hate you, one and all.
An’ I hate you, one and all:
    Damn your eyes.

I killed a man, they said; so they said.

I killed a man, they said an’ I smashed in his head.
An’ I left him layin’ dead,
    Damn his eyes.

But a-swingin’, I must go; I must go.
    A-swingin’, I must go; I must go.
A-swingin’, I must go while you critters down below,
Yell up: “Sam, I told you so.”
    Well, damn your eyes!

    [Instrumental break]

I saw Molly in the crowd; in the crowd.
I saw Molly in the crowd; in the crowd.
I saw Molly in the crowd an’ I hollered, right out loud:
“Hey there Molly, ain’t you proud?
    “Damn your eyes.”

Then the Sherriff, he came to; he came to.
Ah, yeah, the Sherriff, he came to; he came to.
The Sherriff, he come to an he said: “Sam, how are you?”
An I said: “Well, Sherriff, how are you,
    “Damn your eyes.”

    My name is Samuel, Samuel.
    My name is Samuel, Samuel.
My name is Samuel, an’ I’ll see you all in hell.
An’ I’ll see you all in hell,
    Damn your eyes.

  47. Wes McG says:

Great pod cast ! also the wallpaper did not come up for me, total repeat i know but it sounded like it was cool, keep up the great work guys.

  48. Jon says:

Finally got to the end of the boat ride, after grabbing a save game to get me past the Vista gun bug. That last boss was a PAIN until I realised you have to head up to the end of the ship to get him to appear there – I was hanging around near the gun, which was fine when he appeared on the left, but wiped me out every time when he came from the right…

One thing this game is good at, most of the time, is giving you fair warning – and preparing you well for puzzles. Like when you’re using the flamethrower to melt the cave right before you have to use it against the creature, but also little things like stressing the need to shut doors, be careful of the wind, and so on.

I have to admit the safe puzzle in the Esoteric Order of Dagon had me for ages though, I just didn’t make the connection between the diary and the safe downstairs.

Generally very glad that I chose to play through this game though, it’s certainly intense and has a lot of tricks up it’s sleeve. Looking forward to this week’s episode :)
