Damn, I just got past halloween, better move my ass to catch up! CoH 2.400 patch eating my time (plus I only started Bully on Sunday)! At least I got an entertaining commute ahead of me – Cheers!
I just can’t get enough of this game. I deleted my 100% save file to start over for this one. Suggestion for next Game Club. Yakuza. Or Yakuza 2. Or Ico. Or Metal Gear Solid. Or 2. Or 3. Or Crono Trigger.
I say you guys do Second Sight. I’ve had the game for some time now on the PS2 and I haven’t gotten around to getting into it, seeing as I’ve sold my soul to Ubisoft and Far Cry 2. This’d be cool to play as you guys play.
3 suggestions for the next game club:
1. Stubbs the zombie (9.99 on steam)
2. Painkiller
3. Lock on: Modern Air Combat
I bought this game on Saturday and played it pretty much exclusively to catch up to Game Club (I’m already midway through Chapter IV within a few days.)
Bully’s so far exceeding any and every expectation I had of it; it’s compelling narrative and characters coupled with it’s comparatively contained world create a sense of intimacy lacking from most GTA or GTA clones.
I feel that this is the route Rockstar needs to take, because judging from The Lost and Damned’s praises for it’s short, compelling storyline it seems that gamers are much more interested in a 6 hour storyline as opposed to a 40+ hour storyline equivelent of a chain letter.
Just like a chain letter, with GTA IV the closer to the end you get the less it has anything to do with the beginning.
I look forward to participating in as many future Game Club playthroughs as possible
suggestion: Kingdom Hearts! the best game ever! for me anyway..
motion seconded
I have to put my vote in for Gun for the next Game Club.
It figures, my Bully disc got eaten by my PS2. I don’t know why, but when I got up to the middle of Chapter 3 it started to jitter and skip and now it won’t load. I’ll be listening still since I played through the whole game when it came out. Also I agree with either of those two game club suggestions. I own Kingdom Hearts but never finished it (pile of shame) and never had a chance to play Gun. I’m up for either.
i would love to play KH again, but i would spend unnescassary time grinding , getting the ultima weapon, beating Sephiroth, and collecting the dogs
The outfits do make some small difference- no kissing bonus for poor taste; some missions require an outfit change(preppy disguise); and the random comments from NPCs can go from complimenting to ridiculing. Other than that- I like to recreate outfits I have in real life, or make up a new likeness for Jimmy (right now I’m a Vietnam vet with the army boots, green camo pants, veteran jacket, and red bandana).
Oh man, you guys totally screwed over that teacher.
His name, the location he teaches, his department, the unique situations that happened at his school.
I hope he doesn’t get in shit. You should have edited that stuff out.
Agreed.
You guys should consider playing Okami for Game Club.
I meant to agree to this one, definitely for Okami on next backlog.
Okami would be great
YES, Okami would be an excellent pick. I am in the middle of it right now, and it is amazing. I am sad to see that this game never sold very well on either the PS2 or the Wii, because it really is a quality title, and should have been more popular.
I’d be down for this. Or maybe Bioshock would be a good one with Bioshock 2 coming out soon? (sorry if it’s been suggested already)
I also agree with this one. This game has been sitting in my pile of shame for a while now.
YES!!! OKAMI!!! I bought this game but need game club to push me through it and it so’s great yet overlooked!!
Funny I’m in the middle of Okami too.
Great session of Game Club, I’m a big fan of how long the podcasts are because it helps pass time at work. It seems that the theme in the above comments is to suggest games to play, so here goes:
- Deus Ex? Fantastic game, and there’s a new(ish) mod out called the Nameless Mod which adds additional delicious gameplay.
- Vampire: Bloodlines the Masquerade? One of my favourites primarily due to the dialogue when you’re Malkavian. It can be extremely difficult or sort of easy depending on which skills you specialize in.
- Beyond Good and Evil? Great game, period. Cheap too!
That’s it, but I’m sure whatever game y’all choose will be awesome coupled with the commentary of Game Club.
P.S. Play some damn Killzone!
My vote goes for Masquerade as well.
I got about 15 hours into that game in early 2008 and it was a blast.
Haha Beyond Good and Evil was the last game they played for Backlog before it became game club, it was a great discussion so you should go back and listen to those episodes if they’re still up on 1UP.
FFFFF well aren’t I the quick one. Thanks casual_alcoholic, I’ll see if I can get my hands on those.
Currently listening to the show. Could Anthony not getting the Lunch Lady be because he’s not playing scholarship edition?
No, I’m playing on PS2 as well and I had that mission. I’m pretty sure it’s only available at some weird time during school hours, though (after classes are over but before the school actually closes, I think?)
Like he said, he was probably just focusing on completing the Greaser missions so he never noticed it.
I think the LunchLady missions open up after getting caught and being brought to the Principal. Having to help her in the cafeteria was some type of punishment.
Stubbs the Zombie would be awesome. I also think Killer 7, System Shock 2, and The Witcher would be good picks. There are enough lost gems to make this club last a while.
For anyone wanting more game club, I just started up my own based around more retro titles: April’s pick is Mother 3.
Check that out here: http://playthroughs.com/
System shock 2 would be awesome. (maybe with the graphics update mod). Another interesting thing that could be done with SS2 is to have everyone participating pair up and beat the game in co-op.
Love the show guys. Best Podcast out there. I wish I had spent more time on this game. I plan on going back to play through it.
I saw a couple of people saying Kingdom Hearts. I’m all for this. such an amazing game. And has a great flow for game club. I really like bully, but it doesn’t flow very well for game club in my opinion. keep it going guys.
About 2/3 of the way through the podcast. Just wanted Anthony to know that the reason you missed all those missions is that you aren’t playing the Scholarship edition. Santa and the Lunch-Lady quests are most of the 8 new missions added in with the re-release.
I already answered this a few comments ago, but the lunch lady missions are definitely in the PS2 version. The Santa stuff, however, is not.
Hmm..played gun when it first came out. Thought it was fun and wouldn’t mind playing it again. It’s pretty short as well.
I do like Far Cry if you’re talking about the PC version. The console games are a lot different but good, especially FC Instincts.
Here are some other recommendations:
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal or Deadlocked (PS2)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1, downloadable re-release)
BLACK (PS2, Xbox)
Jade Empire (Xbox, PC)
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2, Xbox, PC)
I also did the Panty Raid in Chapter 2. So Matt is right. It might still be available in the Winter though.
Yep. It’s first available in the fall/Chapter 2. I didn’t do it until the beginning of winter, though.
I second any Rachet Game. But IMO UYA is the best one. But I haven’t played tools
Also good episode.
Up your arsenal is indeed the best one. I’ve only played a little bit of Tools of destruction and it just didn’t “feel right” to me, but I hope to pick it up used sooner or later.
Great podcast guys keep up the good work. Just wanted to suggest Valkyria Chronicles for game club. I understand it is only available on ps3 and is very recent, but it has dropped in price to $30 at eb and has become notorious for being a game most people missed out on recently. I think the game type would be a good change of pace as well.
Uh, I think something like Kingdom Hearts would maybe be a terrible choice (or the most terrible choice) for Game Club?
What on earth is there to discuss in a hyper-linear RPG?
“I used Donald for this part. I casted a Fireball.”
Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like the best games for this sort of thing are the more open-ended ones, since those most easily facilitate creating your own narrative and tend to lead to fascinating stories for the podcast. Which is why, again, I have to suggest Far Cry 2.
Alternately, a one show indie games special. Just get everybody to play like ten short indie games (Passage, Spelunky, Gravity Bone, etc) and then go through your impressions of each.
Science nerd time. The human body can, and constantly does breathe fluid. By definition, air is a fluid. It is not however, a good idea to breathe most liquids. I haven’t finished listening yet, but it bothered me enough to take a break and berate you guys for it.
Game Club is still awesome, as always. Keep it up.
As a science enthusiast (I’m not smart enough to be a science nerd), I’m fairly certain air is not a fluid. By definition, fluid is the phase of matter between liquid and solid. Air is typically referred to as a gas. Vapor is the phase between liquid and gas, so air filled with steam can be considered a gas diffused with vapor, but that wouldn’t make the air a vapor.
And Anthony getting the crew to improvise a tune to bother Arthur was solid gold.
Wrong. Air is a fluid, but not a liquid. Both gases and liquids can be fluids (actually, ALL gases are fluids and some liquids are fluids). A fluid is simply a substance that deforms under an applied stress and has the abiltiy to flow.
I think steering away from RPGs in general (Kingdom Hearts and Valkyria Chronicles included) is important particularly because of one factor: time.
Neither game is an epic or anything, but each one does take quite a long time to complete. Valkyria Chronicles in particular does involve a bit of grinding… it’d be hard for everyone to make considerable progress with it every week.
Bully is great for Game Club because it’s non-linear, but it’s even better suited for Game Club because it’s a condensed, easily-digestible video game.
My three choices for Game Club:
1. Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
2. Red Dead Revolver
3. The Warriors
I second The Warriors. Never played it and always wanted to.
Adding to that, as a general sentiment, I agree with everyone saying RPG’s are bad for game club. I don’t want to play 10 hours of game every week to keep up. Of course, this is going by the old rule of thumb that most RPG’s last for about 40 hours, give or take.
Actually I change my suggestion a bit. Either Second Sight or Far Cry 2.
My suggestion for the next Game Club is:
Onimusha Dawn of Dreams
It was released in March of 06 for the PS2 which is pretty much at the end of the PS2s life cycle. It should probably be available used at GameStop, but it is pretty difficult to find new. I think it was pretty much overlooked and as a Onimusha fan Dawn of Dreams is probably the best one in the series and at the same time the most different with the multiple characters and hidden areas only accessible to certain characters.
Dude, the Sumo game was optional. You could quit whenever you wanted so it was your decision to play the “broken” game. And DO NOT GIVE SPOILERS, lots of people here are playing the game and that’s just idiotic.
Sorry, commet directed towards Mitch.
Didn’t know there was a 4th game. Wonder if it’s better than the 3rd one….
I’m with Tyler. I’ve played through Bully twice, and the only thing that made me want to quit was Fatty Fucking Consumo. I hated that game so much that I based an article around it. It’s an interruption in an otherwise great game, and it’s tedious garbage. It’s not fun, it’s not cute, and like Tyler said, it’s goddamn broken.
Chapter IV is easily the worst in the game. The initial raid on the nerd HQ is a pain, and the boss fight wasn’t very fun for me. I couldn’t handle having to aim and shoot while in the open, since hiding behind cover limits your view severely. The funhouse is a lame fetch quest in a maze, and it’s followed by another turret mission.
That complaining aside, I really did like prancing around in the mascot costume after I beat that dude’s ass and jacked his costume. The sabotage that ensues was a prime prank that really captures that whole “being a juvenile asshole” vibe. That was a prime prank. The boss battle was also pretty cool because it was something different. I complained about the maze, but it was still something new, and Bully is really good for keeping things at least mildly fresh every step of the way. And that’s something that picks up in Chapter V in a big way.
Here’s some random suggestions for next time:
Yakuza (PS2 only)
Crimson Skies (Xbox only, Xbox Originals)
The Warriors (Xbox, PS2, PSP)
Freedom Fighters (PS2, Xbox, GCN, PC? – This is the (better) predecessor to Kane and Lynch)
Sly Cooper? {PS2)
Dude, the Sumo game was optional. You could quit whenever you wanted so it was your decision to play the “broken” game. And DO NOT GIVE SPOILERS, lots of people here are playing the game and that’s just idiotic.
Sorry, I’m a fucking idiot >_>, didn’t realise this was the place to comment for the next podcast. I still think that since the Fatty Consumo game was optional it isn’t much of a problem.
I have no idea why people have so much trouble with consumo. I beat the high score on my second try (and I’m a *mom*
)
Actually, I second the whole Onimusha thing, but we should definitely do the first. There’s an easily accessible package of the first three or four games in one box for 20 or 30 bucks that would be easy for everyone to buy.
I guess I’m on a PS2 kick.
While listening and playing, I heard y’all talking about the Black Ninja outfit so I threw it on. Apparently it makes you “almost invisible” to authority figures, which is helpful.
As soon as you can, complete all the Go Kart races at the carnival and through the city. It unlocks a super fast Go Kart at the School Garage.
I actually just finished Chapter IV from beginning to end. Only took a few hours. I went through it way faster than any of the other chapters — probably because I completed most of the side quests and stuff during the week Game Club had off.
Two things:
– What kind of game logic are we going by here that football players can slip on marbles that are spread over grass?
– When you’re gluing the benches at the football field, Fatty delivers an amazing throwaway line: “Here! Take this glue bottle! It’s full of glue!”
The Greaser chapter has been my favorite so far. The stuff with the Nerds having their own fortress was cool, but it went beyond “cartoony” and dipped into total ridiculousness. In general, I’ve noticed that the missions get more and more exaggerated and crazy as the story progresses (the fun house section comes to mind). I’m not sure if this is a good thing… I’d probably prefer it if the scenarios were more rooted in reality. But maybe that’s just me.
i would want ico to be a game club games, but it is very rare. I bought it during the SotC backlog and it cost me $50, but i probably got ripped off. Also, Arthur looks like a scary mofo to see in a dark alley
Also; we’re not all crazy religious Creationists here in Texas, as I’m sure Tyler and Robert will confirm. I don’t think I know a single Creationist, but somehow they get elected to our legislature.
“I’m not saying ALL Republicans are sexist, racist homophobes; Just the people they elect into office to represent them.” – David Cross
Since your podcast doesn’t have many (or any?) of the old Retronauts crew, some games have opened as possibilities. I’d love for you guys to try out Indigo Prophecy or Beyond Good and Evil.
Second Sight is a great idea. That one went completely overlooked at the time of its release.
One to consider is The Suffering, which is actually free to download at gamershell.com, so anyone with a decent PC could play along without having to drop a dime.
There must be multiple chances for you to get certain missions. For example, I KNOW I got the panty raid mission in the fall, as I was in the vicinity of the movie theater next to where you meet up with the chick to go to the carnival.
It seems that you have many opportunities to do the optional missions, as I’m guessing you guys just didn’t get around to them, so they were available in the winter.
I’m gonna be pissed off if I missed an opportunity to play some missions. I never got the Hobo Santa mission, could that have been in Scholarship Edition only?
I’ve been playing for about 20 hours and am about 87 percent complete. I’m really trying for a full out 100 percent but I don’t want to consult a FAQ so I’m spending a lot of time riding around in circles, searching for rubber bands and G&G cards.
Yes, the Hobo Santa mission is exclusive to the Scholarship Edition.
I’m pretty sure the only mission you can miss in the PS2 version is the one that occurs during Halloween (and you don’t need to complete it to achieve 100% anyway).
As a fellow ex-Texan (Exan?), when I go back to visit family, I get the “god damn you must have balls made of steel to have moved out of this fine texan nation”, but all in all am totally glad that I moved. Except for not being so close to Austin.
I don’t have anything else to contribute to the discussion about Bully other than I will probably get it soon so I can catch up. Maybe.
And also that you should do GUN for the next game club for 3 reasons:
1. The game is supid awesome.
2. It is a western, something that games don’t cover too regularly, and as a result, completely slays face.
3. If you play it, I can bitch about the last boss, which is a damn shame since the rest of the game is so freakin amazing.
Has anyone else fallen out of love with Bully? As the game progresses it continues becoming less and less believable – which is actually rather disappointing IMO. Rockstar had the whole private school thing captured up until the god damn nerd fortress.
Really now? come on.
I’ll play through to the end still, but the game is seemingly getting more out there.
As for suggestions, Why don’t we all play Escape from Butcher Bay? Easy to get, great game, and fun.
Otherwise, how about Fable 1? It doesn’t require nearly as much dedication as Valkyria Chronicles or KH..
Keep up the good work guys.
To Arthur’s question: Bully only has one ending.
Recommendation for Game Club: Shadow of Destiny.
It’s a PS2 adventure game (I think it was ported to PC as well). It has multiple endings and a lot of different ways to get through the game. It basically expects you to play through it multiple times (if you skip cutscenes, you can finish a single play through in about an hour). It has an intriguing time traveling plot, good presentation, and the antagonist is voiced by the same dude who voices Mario (Wah! WOO HOO!). Mmmm – maybe forget that I mentioned that last part.
Just finished Chapter 4. It took me a little over two hours, easily the shortest chapter of the game. I also felt that, as a consequence, it was the most focused so far. All but the sanitarium rescue mission was focused on the main Nerd/Jocks story, and I found myself more invested in it as a result.
A few quick notes.
- The sanitarium rescue is easily the most annoying mission so far in the game. I didn’t find it particularly hard, but I find the game’s stealth mechanics very sloppy, and found myself relying on the blurry radar way more than I would have liked.
- Equally annoying was the attack on the Nerd fortress. One of my favorite aspects of Bully is how well the game world comes together, and I found this entire segment very “gamey” in the worst possible ways.
- I found Mandy to be surprisingly developed. I liked the sequence in which she cries and opens up on the bleachers. It’s nice to see Rockstar giving the “stereoptypical” cheerleader character a little bit of depth, especially after the Lola segment in the Greaser segment.
- The final mission (which reminded me a lot of the Halloween stuff) is easily my favorite of the entire game so far. I loved the dancing mechanic (playing on the wii), and the escalating prank. The boss was kind of clever as well.
I feel as though I am in the minority when I say that I thought chapter 4 was awesome and the most fun part of the game thus far. Starting off infiltrating the nerd fortress immediately after ending chapter 3 really threw me for a loop, but in a good way. Instead of following the formulaic big epic event followed by a slightly less intense mission, they took it in the other direction and started off chapter 4 with a bang. Although most of chapter 4 wasn’t exactly tied to reality, what was important to me was that it was extremely fun for me to play through. It was also a strong change in terms of game play, especially with the introduction of the spud gun. This mission and the fun house mission really helped diversify the mission types and definitely improved the pacing of the game for me. Every mission in chapter 4 felt different from the rest of the game and that resonated with me. If you’re in the crowd of people that would rather exchange less monotony for more realism then I am sorry you feel that way, but I respect Rockstar’s design decisions here and it completely worked for me.
On another note I’ve beaten the game already and got to about 93% before I got bored and decided I didn’t want to do anymore, I went through and did everything was fun to me, which is more important than ruining my experience with a painful grind to 100%. The errands are just to random and even with a guide are too difficult to locate, I have 2 left and after hours or searching with a guide came up with nothing. If a game internally supports a good way to achieve 100%, I’ll do it, and although Bully helps in some aspects such as collecting, it’s all or nothing for me. Still a great game and I’ll contribute my thoughts on the end when you get there. Great job guys keep it up!
Recommendations for next Game Club
Okami
Viewtiful Joe
Eternal Darkness
Valkyria Chronicles
Dark Cloud 2
Madworld
Ratchet and Clank: Up You Arsenal
Pikmin 2
Why couldn’t arthur be the one that’s leaving? I already stopped listening to the podcast because of him. Can’t stand him.
Yet you still feel the need to comment about this on HIS website?
Say what you want about Arthur, but props to him and Anthony for continuing this project despite two of their largest personalities bailing.
Really? I have respect for Phil and I’m sure he kept a lot of the podcast on track but he always sounded like a snore to me. I’m honestly not that bummed he’s no longer around. Arthur and Anthony’s digressions are much more interesting.
I couldn’t agree more.
For the next game club I would love for it to be Rule of Rose.
I remember it stirred up so much controversy at the time and was in fact not released here in the UK. It would be interesting to get a discussion on it’s supposed offensive content in comparison to what we are able to play freely now. I managed to snag a French copy off of eBay a while back for £25, the entire game is in English, the manual however is not.
In America it was published by Atlus and currently eBay lists prices between $15 to $30.
Coolness, guys. Loved hearing about the shit you all pulled back in the day, and I think talking about stuff you’ve done that is in some way related to the game you’re playing fits perfectly in with the format and tone of game club.
That one dude’s suggestion about doing a one-off game club with a bunch of indie games sounds spectacular.
Keep up the Eat-Sleep-Game awesomeness.
Back in the Backlog days there were plans to do mini backlogs based off smaller titles. Maybe break up each large scale game club game with a 1 episode segment in between games that covered a smaller project or indie game? There’s still a lot of room to expand on this project, but I’d wait til things settle down a bit especially since Phil and Nick both left so recently.
When I first kissed a boy, it was after I had beat the game.
I walked up to the blonde haired bully and I started talking nice to him, he said he wanted something special so I gave him flowers then I kissed him.
The townie girl which I had unlocked walked up, gave the saddest face then ran off crying.
I proceeded to put the controller down and walk slowly, I went out side had a cigarette and just sat there thinking how could I be so conflicted by this game.
I walked back inside right to my 360, as soon as I could I proceeded to find the blonde haired bully. I beat the living shit out of him used all that was at my disposal. The spud gun, rocket, stink bomb, etc, until I was out. Then I proceeded to just kick the living shit out of him for about 5 minutes.
After that I ran over to the townie girl and kissed her over and over again.
Never again will I kiss a boy in that game.
I also went to private school in real life, and the townie girl reminds me of that girl I never got with but often do think about.
put the controller down and walked away slowly*
You scare me. You need help.
http://www.nola.com/news/?/base/news-1/1239081731120020.xml&coll=1
That got me thinking. We need a zombie game. Maybe Dead rising.
Still Up Your Arsenal is what I’m standing by.
Even though I haven’t been playing along I find it still incredibly enjoyable to follow the Game Club. Hearing this makes me almost want to dust the Wii off and get the Scholarship Edition for it. Keep up the great work, and I had some possible ideas for the next Game Club:
Max Payne
Kingdom Hearts (bare gameplay is about 20hrs)
Rule of Rose
Silent Hill 2
Yakuza 2
Bioshock (maybe too recent for everyone?)
Penny Arcade Adventures: Ep 1 (a throw back to the old style games)
Ico
Okami
This isn’t a serious suggestion because reading how long it takes to beat it (40+ hrs) might be too much to digest in 4 weeks, but Persona 3/4 would be interesting because of the high school sim aspect.
The shows great, please keep it up.
I think the next game played you guy’s play is Crackdown.
I have just got done with Bully s.e. about two weeks before started.
P.S. both sticks move a lot faster in biology.
Hey guys quick suggestion for the show, standards and precedent are great and all but I don’t see an exact need for Game Club to be exactly 4 episodes every time, I think that severely limits the amount of games available for game club, both for longer and shorter games. If the community doesn’t want to play a game that will take 6-8 episodes of game club then they won’t vote for it, but I think a lot of those games could be considered. Also a lot of games can be covered in 1-3 episodes of game club. A lot of games are difficult to break into quarters and I’m sure you’ve all noticed with some of the previous games, and it might be easier to decide the amount of episodes based on the game everyone votes for. I really think you guys should throw away the necessity to have 4 episodes, it’s your show and you can do what you want with it, but if what you want is to keep the 4 episode than I respect that. I’m a huge fan of the show regardless of your decisions but definitely think this would improve the game club significantly. Keep up the great work guys, you all rock!
Hmmm how bout bioshock? ive been meaning to replay it and if it was gameclub that would definitely be the push i needed to throw it back into the xbox
-Bully is made by Rockstar Vancouver. Not by Rockstar North.
Which is probably why this game has good mission design.
-Rockstar Vancouver also made the game based on the movie ‘The Warriors’. Which is probably why the game works (and hand to hand especially works).
-Side missions are based on time of day. ie. Lunch Lady missions aren’t available during class hours or when the school is closed.
You guys should seriously consider Star Control 2 for your Game Club, not only is it open source now and therefore FREE to download under the name “The Ur-Quan Masters” over at http://sc2.sourceforge.net/
It’s a classic game, fully non-linear, which would make for great story sessions with different outcomes for each member of game club.
Also Developer Toys For Bob has been wanting to do a true sequel for years now and the publicity could really help them.
Please consider it!
You can find a lot more info on Star Control 2 here:
http://www.giantbomb.com/star-control-ii/61-7030/
You guys should do The Warriors eventually. Both games are really similar and atmospheric.

Arthur,
Clive Barker’s voice sounded odd because he had a polyp in his throat. Not cancerous, but extremely painful, and he’s since had it removed.
Here’s some trivia concerning Bully:
There’s a german “comedian” who named himself “Bully Herbig”. He sued in Take2 in july 08 for giving his name a bad sound. He claimed he didn’t want to be connected with a “violent game” and demanded to stop selling the game and pay him money. Of course he lost that case since the judge couldn’t find a connection between him and the game

For gameclub I suggest some games that have different options for the same missions, aka a lot of player interaction changing the gameplay. Those being somthing like mass effect or even assasin’s creed, far cry 2 or bioshock. I know they are all relativly recent, especially farcry 2 (a lot of people looked past that game anyway), but they are all readily available and not on the top-selling lists anymore and god-dammit 2007 was a good year for gaming.
If not those than…peggle
Ratchet & Clank: Up your arsenal has a lot of mentions in here. I think it should automatically be considered for the list of potential games for the next game club.
I realize it’s only on the PS2 but, seriously, if you don’t have a PS2 by now you don’t play video games. Period. Besides, Sony just dropped the price.
Couple other suggestions. How about a good FPS?
Half-Life 2 (PC, xbox, PS3, 360).
Doom 3 (PC, xbox)
BLACK (xbox, ps2)
Jimmy should have been the Quarterback. During the QB battle I was able to throw the explosive footballs 60+ yards with pin-point accuracy. And to beat the QB with one sack? kind of anti-climatic.
What bothers me about the story is the lack of Gary and the Principal. At this point a betrayal by Petey would be the only endgame that would hold any impact.
Also, I think Biology 5 with the Wii remote nearly gave me a heart attack.
Biology 5 on the controller seemed to be relativly easy compared to the others for some reason
Go for the obscure next Game Club. R-Type Final.
Alright I worked up a big list, sorry:
Symphony of the Night
–You can buy on PSN, Xbox Live, PSP Remix, etc
–I bought it and need an excuse to play it through!
Silent Hill: Homecoming
Freedom Fighters
Mark Ekko’s Getting Up
Advent Rising
Killzone (the 1st)
Manhunt
Yakuza
Geist
Second Sight
American McGee(tm)’s Scrapland
Resident Evil Zero
Galleon
–You heard me, Galleon.
Some suggestions are probably only good for a 1 or 2 episode show, which might be refreshing:
Armed & Dangerous
–Supposed to be pretty funny!
Batman: Dark Tomorrow
–Because the frustration with Cthulhu was funny!
Viewtiful Joe
Crimson Skies
I have always wanted to play these games but never came around to it.
Gregory Horror Show
Shadow Of Memory
Deus Ex: Invisible war
Manhunt 2
Geist
S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky
With the list of Single Player games on these lists, could I recommend some Multiplayer games we could play for 1-2 weeks?
Counter Strike: Source – Most people who bought HL2 should have this game. Hopefully someone could open a server for all of us, or make a steam group so we could all join a game together. Not only could we play dust or dust2, zombiemod still exists, along with gungame and surf maps.
Battlefield 2 / 2142 / 1942 – You could probably find this in your closet or something, and supports a HUGE amount of people.
And some other SP games
Freedom Fighters – Mitch stated the reasons before; I won’t retread.
Sam & Max Season 1 – Amazingly funny, not too short but not too long(as it’s cut into 6 episodes), $10 at BestBuy, though it is a bit YMMV since it’s not listed online.
Hey, great episode as usual. Got a kick out of hearing my letter on air, and I doubt if anyone in my school besides myself is listening to the podcast, so all’s good
Love the idea of my name being an expletive
great episode.
so, it seems most people are not using the wii?
i am, and i dig it. i rented it because the pc version was a-crashing like crazy, and ended up loving it. the fighting works well. boxing is a blast. and it works like a charm for classes and aiming in general.
while not as pretty as pc, for me, it is a LOT more fun.
my 2c for the next game: something available on multiple platforms–because excluding people sucks.
again, great work. i look forward to it weekly.
I’m not sure if you guys will even get to this comment next week, but since it applies to all of the game it will still be relevant:
My favorite thing about Bully, as Arthur brought up a couple times, is how intimate and believable it feels in contrast to the GTA series. Something about how the seasons change is really remarkable in this game. Yeah we’ve seen the sun go down and rise in Zelda and I’m sure there are other games who actually have seasonal changes, but in Bully there is so much detail. Seeing the town lit up with Christmas lights and everyone wearing winter clothes really helped in bringing me into this world.
No one has said it yet, but this game really feels like Harry Potter. This is partly why I love it. You are this nosy, powerfully gifted school all alone in a prep school, uncovering all of its dirty little secrets. I really love this game and a lot of that has to do with it having the best sense of place of any Rockstar game. Yes, I played GTA4. Recreating NYC isn’t as impressive as creating a place of your own, IMO.
How about a Resident Evil game? Resident Evil 4 was one of the best games ever made, why not? Or Resident Evil (Remake) or Resident Evil Zero. RE4 would be easier, considering Resident Evil 0 & 1 aren’t separated into segments so it would be hard to designate a stopping point. Also, you don’t really have a linear path whatsoever in the other two, and there are a ton of optional puzzles and things. Plus, if you’d never played the RE games before you’d have to follow a fact closely. RE4 it is, imo.
Also, some other reccomendations:
-GTA: III/Vice City/San Andreas (seriously, EVERYONE has these games already)
-Metal Gear Solid 2
-Devil May Cry (1)
-ICO (unfortunately hard to get ahold of)
-Burnout Paradise
-Max Payne
-Dark Cloud (1)
-Bioshock
-Uncharted
-Dead Rising
-God of War (1 or 2)
-Chrono Trigger (DS, PS1, SNES, emulator)
Next game club?
I’m thinking Legos…
Lego Island 1/2/whatever
Lego Batman
Lego Star Wars
Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy
Lego Indiana Jones
Also…
Fable 1/2
Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
Dungeon Siege 1/2
So, Mrs. Phillips roped me into getting a bunch of stuff for a hot date. I doubt it will turn out as nightmarish as Edna’s date with Dr. Slawter as there weren’t any sedatives on the list. Dunno why, but at every turn there was a posse of goons waiting to stop me. I do how the date goes well, but I’m not hiding in a tree this time. I have to admit it: when it comes to Mrs. Phillips, I’m hot for teacher.
What with all the teachers asking me to run errands for them I figured it must be springtime because if love isn’t in the air, I don’t know what else is. And so Mr. Watts called me into his office to get me to run delivery boy for him. Man was he baked, I’m sure he’s running a meth lab out of the school. So long as I make all the deliveries, the cops don’t hassle me and I get paid well: why not? In the end it turned out he was running something far more profitable than a meth lab, he’s a snake-oil salesman.
I am starting to think that Petey is the good version of Gary’s insane paranoid megalomaniac. Maybe I should be nicer to him. I’ll start with his advice to take over the nerds in order to take over the jocks.
OK, while these bruises heal I have time to contemplate that “rich fantasy world” in the context of nerds must mean self-delusional. At least they’re well armed, even by this school’s standards. If their plans fall flat, I guess I could just arm everyone with spud guns and just out-shoot the jock into submission. Probably was a good idea to make allies with the nerds sooner rather than later.
Today I faced my natural predator: The maze in the funhouse. Apparently the jocks had cornered some of the nerds there. If I ever visit the funhouse again, it will be too soon.
Apparently Earnest has a plan, and it involves “compromising” pictures of Mandy. I have no ideas what he’s got planned, but I may have to keep some extra exposures for myself.
Still no idea what Earnest’s plan was, but I suspect it was personal. Needless to say I found myself defending the Observatory from an onslaught of ‘roid monkeys. It did at least go to prove the observation that ‘roids make you stupid, because they came in by the most heavily defended route available: from the Library. They could have rushed us from the football field and the nerds never would have stood a chance. Way to know your terrain dorks.
Why do I get the feeling that I’m always working for the guys I beat up? Who knows, at least the plans tend to be good ones. The nerds hatched a plan to get the mascot costume off the jocks, and also got in a little revenge. I kept the Bullworth Bull. Call it an insurance policy that the nerds won’t turn on me.
I found Mandy way up in the bleachers bawling her eyes out today. Apparently Earnest’s plan involved breaking the one person among the jocks that isn’t a threat to the nerds. So long as she never finds out I was the photographer I’ll win her over by getting rid of all the posters. Time to earn some brownie points with the jocks by going through the only one of them with brains. But, if she thinks those posters make her look like a slut, I’m really going to have to introduce her to Lola.
And the mascot costume pays off. All I had to do was master some stupid dance. I spent the evening spreading mayhem about the football field. I have to hand it to Earnest, his plan worked. First the jocks were humiliated, then incapacitated, and then completely subjugated. That makes this school mine, and I can finally have a little peace and quiet.
So I fixed my disc and was able to continue in the game and I see a lot of people complaining about that first mission, the attack on the nerd fortress. It really was my favorite part of the game. This is my second time playing through it so I knew what to do, but at the same time the first time I played it I was happy to find that the game wasn’t going to leave out the nerds. Meaning you get to kick their asses too. Don’t worry I’m no bully in real life, I got my share when I was in school, but the fact that the nerds were just as devious and manipulating as the preps or as ignorant as the jocks was really a great element to the game’s story. Which says a lot cause most action games I play can’t say they have a good story.
Yeah right before that mission I was explaining to my roommate how I sort of just took over the nerds passively without much of a fight. I just assumed I’d already taken over them and they were my henchmen. Then I immediately realized, about 5 minutes after saying this, that this was not the case. I also really enjoyed this mission, very diverse and fun.
Damn you all! I had no interest in playing Bully but your Cthulhu podcast was so much fun I got it anyway for £13 ($20-ish). And i’m really enjoying it so now I’m stuck playing it! Damn you all!
I’m pretty ambivalent about the whole thing ’cause I didn’t have that much fun at school and I couldn’t understand why anyone would want to go through it in a video game. But I find myself charmed by the school pastiche RockStar have assembled. The smaller scale also makes it more accessible than GTA- but I’d still much rather they’d taken the smaller scale and greater detail and applied it to another setting. I find myself going to every class and missing out on fun! I thought I’d stopped doing that when I graduated from real school!
I feel like a bad game-club player. I enjoyed Bully so much that not only have I played ahead, but I’ve finished the game, 100 percent-ed it, and got 1000/1000 points on 360. Thanks for choosing such a great game, I would never have played it if it wasn’t for Game Club!
Watching the part about Love on the latest episode of CO-OP, made me want to play Giants Citizen Kabuto again. Would love to hear a game club series about that game. Giants is fun and funny. Interesting mix of base-building and third person action, large maps and jet pack hoping. Really innovative for its time. Still stands apart today. And I think it’s like 5 bucks at GOG.com.
Speaking of which you know what you should do? Put up links on the front page for the games featured on Game Club and get affiliates commissions from amazon, best buy, gog and the likes, to continue financing the site and the efforts you guys put in.
