We close out our Game Club series this week with another 2 hour show, as we discuss where Valve went with Episode 2 of the Half Life 2 series and where we think they might be headed. If you want to hear more, keep an ear out after the outtake for an extended Valve soliloquy!

Maybe you should follow your own advice
awesome as always guys
too bad my copy of the orange box got scratched and is being repaired, I don’t know if I should listen to this I’ve beaten HL2 ep. 2 twice now but I want to have it fresh in my memory.
I don’t know what next times game club will be but I’ll make some suggestions:
Call of duty 2:big red one
007: everything or nothing(imo the best bond game ever)
Way of the samurai 3 (it just came out and nobody knew about it)
Definitely my favorite Half Life episode. All the other games have a mild sense of not being fun while you’re actually playing, but I marathoned this one despite my swine flu. Playing crystal smooth with full settings on a mac to prove a point.
Next one:
Call of Duty 2
Mercenaries 1
You should play some mod as a one-off (or two-off) for the next Game Club. Something like those recent HL2 mods like Radiator and Dear Esther, or Afraid of Monsters: Director’s Cut for HL1, or The Nameless Mod for Deus Ex (note that TNM is almost as long as Deus Ex itself, and won’t actually work as a one or two-off).
I really wish Ep 2 had added a little bit of closure at the very end, so it wasn’t such a case of gaming blue-balls.
Oh my god, Gordon, that was terrible! Some crazy shit just happened! We have to THE END
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/884757/half_life_2_the_lost_room/
See they noticed half life influences in the first season of lost and gabe got talking to the maker of lost and promised they’d add something in Episode Two for him.
While it may have evolved into more of a location aid in the final release, the grubs’ shrieking was initially supposed to “alert” other antlions, and cause a small wave to attack you. It was supposed to provide a bit of a dilemma with killing them for health; you could either risk continuing on with low health, or restore it and risk the antlion attack. That’s where the “as long we don’t step on the grubs” line came from, and it didn’t get changed when the grubs were revised.
Advisor proboscis = spase penis
“Lamarr Goes to Space” sounds like a children’s book.
Just got to the part where you get ambushed in that house/villa. I have very fond memories of that area *_*
I would like to suggest the original Call of Duty and its expansion United Offense.
That, sir, is a good idea. However, seeing as how they are porting it to the 360 and PS3 in the near future it would probably make more sense to do it then.
Ahhh…CoD1 team deathmatch…good memories.
I dunno man, I can’t see CoD making great material to talk about
Arthur: “so.. you shoot a bunch of guys untill they stop coming, or you realize they won’t stop coming untill you go forward. So.. you go forward, and there’s some guys, before I tell you what I did here I wanna hear how you guys did it?”
Anthony, Matt, Tyler: “I shot them”
Arthur: “Dudes, you totally missed it! You can actually use a GRENADE there and take like, all those guys out in one!”
Tyler: “No way?! awww damn! was there an achievement for that?”
I pretty much abandoned rebel fm after kollar left – but I happened to listen to a gamespy db that only had Anthony and Scott. It was pretty easy-going and had the tone of a conversation between two people. I found that I enjoy listening to Anthony (when is he going to do geekbox?)
Anyway – this HL2 series intrigued the hell outta me – and it’s been great. Arthur has definitely refined some rough edges and it’s pretty good listening. Keep it up guys.
Ryan original plan in the first episode of RebelFM was to
play new game like Brutal Legend.
So why not Brutal Legend.
Playing A new game was probable more a reallity
before they got there new job.
but Brutal Legend it will be nice to pouche true Tim Schafer next meat circus.
and The Thing age terribly thats why only Antony is the only
podcaster likes a kick to the balls in form of a bad movie tie in.
Great episode guys.
You all help me true my backlog of games.
A new game will be cool like Borderlands or Brutal Legend.
I cod finally pouch me to finish a Tim Schafer game.
Great job guys.
For the next game club how about Armed and Dangerous or The Simpsons: Hit and Run?
About commentary mode that Ryan was talking about going through Episode 2 again on Easy. I don’t think you have to go through the game on Easy to speed through it. I played The Orange Box on the PS3 and when you played a commentary you would be put into a “God” mode so you won’t get damaged.
Funniest podcast intro ever:
“Hello, people of the world. Welcome to my boat.”
“Hello, Demon’s Souls sucks.”
“Duhhhhhhhhhh.”
And further talk about pineapple heads and child birth.
Great Gameclub guys, respawned my interest in the series and pointed out a few little details I’d missed, making me enjoy it even more.
For HL2 mods, I’d encourage everyone to check out the “Research and Development” mod. Well-made puzzle mod, similar to Portal in a way (in that there’s no firearms, just the grav gun).
As for the next Gameclub, I’d put my vote behind a few that have been mentioned in the comments before. Apologies if they’ve already been shot down, I haven’t listened to all the GC podcasts:
- Okami. Uniquely styled (in appearance and gameplay), under-appreciated, and it should really be on everyone’s “played” list. Limited to just PS2 though, don’t know how necessary you feel multiple platforms are.
- Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. First game to use the source engine, interesting world with an entertaining storyline. Another game like Call of Cthulhu that could’ve been a great series, if not for production shutting down. This one actually works though. In multiple play-throughs, I’ve never hit a single bug after installing the 1.2 patch, and it runs fine on Vista.
Can we do a one episode game club for Stubbs the Zombie? It’s available on Steam and as an Xbox Classic.
Hey Guys, is there any chance of getting Dreamfall the longest journey as a game club one day? i keep hearing awesome things about this game and its story and have been getting increasingly tempted to buy it off of xbox origianls. However, i keep stopping myself because it seems like a prime candidate for game club! Personally, i find it difficult to finish old games if im playing through alone, listening to game club is a great incentive to push forward with a title, because i get to share in the experience with you guys!
anyways keep up the good work,
(excessive dick sucking)
By far my favorite Game Club since Call of Cthulhu.
This was a brilliant GameClub, I just hadn’t played these games even though I owned the Orange Box. Shit, I had HL2 on release but stopped at Ravenholm because I was a pussy. This drew me out of that insanity and gave me what is now my favorite game.
Playing these games gave me that feeling I had when I was younger and was entirely immersed and won over by a gaming experience. It was as important to me as that week after I got my gold Ocarina of Time cartridge. Just lovely to have that feeling again in this day and age.
I very much enjoyed the discussions except Ryan’s steamrolling almost made me quit listening in the last two episodes. Fortunately he started to shut up after he kept messing up the order of the cave/antlion parts. I felt like he was shouting over the others. I understand the urge to do this when you have enjoyed a game this much but I didn’t listen to hear Ryan shout about his experience, I was listening to hear what travis did with the gnome
Funny thing is if you have ever been to a book club there tends to be some motherfucker who acts like this and quieter people who might have really interesting perspectives to add to the conversation dont get a chance. Then the cute shy girl who probably would have touched my, oops i mean one’s small penis when we got to read Anais Nin doesn’t come back after the asshole scared her off. And shy girls who like book clubs are normally the surprise superfucks. Thanks a lot Ryan.
Hey guys, AWESOME Game Club! Loved all 4 episodes, and most of all love these games. Great discussions and great analysis of these fantastic games, and thanks!
Secondly, suggestions for Game Club?
-Any of the Devil May Cry games (well, except 2, for obvious reasons). I’m a big fan of the series, just curious about your opinions on any of them (my favorite is 3, I’d appreciate maybe if you guys did DMC4, since it might finally give me a reason to finish playing the game. I can just never get into actually finishing it).
-Assassin’s Creed? (in time for Assassin’s Creed 2, might be fun, albeit very repetitive…)
-Chronicles of Riddick: Butcher Bay/Dark Athena (either one, or both)
-Dead Space (I JUST picked this one up the other day so I could have something scary to play for Halloween, plus I’ve been dying to play it)
-Resident Evil 4, or maybe 5 (just figured another “scary”, although the term is very loose, game in time for Halloween, and good for some fun discussions)
Some oldie suggestions:
-Panzer Dragoon Orta (picked it up before the summer and greatly enjoyed it…what a beautiful game)
-Either Conker’s Bad Fur Day (N64 version) or Conker: Live and Reloaded, I’m sure probably the latter since it’s easier to obtain and play with a 360. (Finally!) Finished playing it a few months ago and loved it.
-Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, awesome awesome (but under appreciated) game that’s easy to find, and just fun to play.
-Shadow of the Colossus…enough said.
Thanks guys! Fat penis, to all.
Shadow Of The Colossus has already been done, back when this was the 1-Up FM Backlog. Podcast dates are 23rd June 08 to 14th July 08. It was a good one!
The Game Club page on this site should have a list of games already covered and games that will never be played, even though people keep suggesting them.
This was my favorite GameClub so far. I have only recently played this game and the timing was perfect. This is a game that still stands above a lot of the new releases coming out. Even with the loading every 5 minutes. I loved hearing you guys talk about it and playing along at the same time. Enough that I almost want to play it again right now.
Which brings me to my next comment… I am currently in a phase where I’m going back and playing games that I missed before all the new ones come out, which has brought me to Mass Effect. I’m not sure how it could be fit into a GameClub series, but I would love to hear you guys’ thoughts on it. Especially since the new one is coming out soon. It is probably too long for GameClub and would have to be a little more streamlined to keep everyone on the same pace instead of wandering and exploring as much. Just though I would throw in my suggestion for the next one. I really enjoyed playing along on this one and look forward to more.
Amazing. I really loved the 8+ Hours of you guys talking about these games. Also, try to have Ryan on regularly, he’s a cool guy.
As for suggestions, Arthur mentions this one a lot, and it’s a damn good game: “The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay/Assault on Dark Athena”. It’s another FPS, and I guess doing two in a row would burn people out, but please consider it, since it seems I’m not the only one saying it should be done, if not now, later on.
Also, HALLOWEEN!
Considering that the Game Club games should be easy to get, I think a Resident Evil or Silent Hill is in order. The good Silent Hill’s are hard to find some places though. Specially one and two. As for RE, I think REmake would be awesome to do, or just RE4. Possibly Condemned, since that’s a damn fantastic horror game, and it’s easy to find. (It’s in First Person though). Maybe some Dead Space (Although Tyler just played it) or Bioshock if you think you can survive so much FPS.
As personal picks, I think for a good overlooked, and possibly the last hard FPS, you should play XIII. And Kya: Dark Lineage is a really good Zelda-esque clone on PS2 that also got severely overlooked. Those are harder to find, but awesome nonetheless. Hope you guys pick something good, and preferably horror-based, and keep it up.
Suggestion for next:
Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time.
Because:
-It’s available for a ton of platforms.
-Including Pc ports that are awkward to play with mouse & keyboard so it fit’s the gameclub traditions of Matt from area 5 for not being sensible in choice of platform & input device.
-It also has lots of powers and tricks that make combat easy that Arthur can overlook so the other tradition of him being frustrated through his own faults can be quite easily upheld as well.
-It might connect nicely with the Half Life 2 since it’s a game where you’re also on a journey with a single NPC companion who is also a well realised videogame female character.
-Oh, and it’s also a definite & absolute must play.
Another great GC!
Most enjoyable podcast guys, thanks. Anthony are you physically incapable of silently passing gas?
I’ll throw my past suggestions for the next GCs:
Yakuza and Thief III. Both are very modular and easy to break up into episodes!
yeah booiiiyy. I’m all for Yakuza. Actually just started Yakuza 2 for the first time as a way of doing a little personal ‘game club’ with Garnett. My copy was also still in the shrink wrap, and just like him I wonder wtf I was thinking putting it off for so long.
I also still suggest Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath and Jade “Chinese Star Wars” Empire too.
I’ve been saying Yakuza from the beginning! Or Yakuza 2 and skype in Garnett. Or just get Garnett to show up. Or we could just do Yakuza 1 or 2 without Garnett. I think that’s what we should do.
I’d love to do Yakuza
Who – I’ve just been so impressed by this Game Club series. Not to mention that I am now a huge half-life fan. I’ve gone in the last few week from never having played a half-life game to going back through the episodes on PC to see how they compare to the 360 version and listening to the commentary.
Sometime I’d love to do KOTOR for game club, but not right now during crazy release season! I like the idea that Trejik has above for doing a survival horror game during this time of year. And it just so happens that ‘The Thing’ is a survival horror game, that I bought this year because Anthony keeps mentioning it . . .
HL2 was a great GC!!!
The thing looks like a cool game for the next GC, but, is there a place where we can buy-download? else please give us a week so we can wait for it to arrive.
Best Game Club ever. Next play something Super NES… Chrono Trigger?
I actually liked the 5 way discussion for this game club. Too bad Valve couldn’t use this audio as the commentary in game.
Awesome GC, keep up the good work guys.
Just wanted to leave a suggestion for a great HL2Mod that I haven’t seen anyone else mention.
Minerva
Just go play it. Best single player HL2 mod ever made, at least that stick to the normal HL2 gameplay. In fact it’s so good that Valve hired the guy that made it, which kinda sucks since it ends with a bit of a cliffhanger and he’ll likely never make the next part now.
was a lot of fun to replay the episodes and listen to this gameclub (i skipped hl2, played it too many times, and it’s a little bit of a time sink). can’t believe tyler did the gnome achievement haha
I did the Gnome achievement too, so I feel Tyler’s pain immensely. I hated carrying around that little bastard for 5 hours.
I can’t believe how often Anthony farts during podcasts… Is he vegetarian or something?
Yes he is vegetarian.
But he’s also mexican.
Great podcast as always guys!!! I still think that the first Dues Ex would make a good GC game but I am open minded about The Thing
Hey another awesome podcast.
Anyway if anyone still wants to buy Half Life 2 and the Eps over steam you can get the Half Life 2 Complete pack for $15.39 this weekend.
I’m a little shocked to see no mention of this. The Black Mesa Source team announced late last year that their release date is before the end of 2009. Since then they have been releasing video’s of old mechanics they were working on in the alpha build. If you didn’t know there is a new trailer for Black Mesa Source. It was release November 08. If you haven’t seen it I think you should check it out. It shows off some of their voice acting while being an actual teaser for those who haven’t played Half Life.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGlhgVz5r6E
With Halloween coming up, The Thing would be perfect for the next Gameclub.
Even if the Shenmue II suggestion was in jest, I am being genuine when saying that would be awesome. Such a good game.
will the next game for game club be announced in this weeks rebel fm?
btw did anyone else get nauseous playing the last battle? i dont know what it is but whenever i play console fps’s that require me to constantly look up to aquire a target my head starts spinning. weird that it doesnt happen when i play fps’s on pc
as always great episode guys
just to make sure that the advice from Eiffer is heeded,
MINERVA is a really terrific HL2 mod – almost like its own episode, it has its own narrative contribution to the story of the Combine, and its own hero, manipulated by an unseen hacker-type overseer to accomplish his mission. I heard about it first on 1UP way back when they were listing best mods for PC games, and I think Jeff Green put it on the list.
Really, really good.
MINERVA. Check it out!
Question. HL2: Episode 3 or HL3?
new engine? ect ect? thoughts.
The Thing would be a good idea. I heard that was good but never played it or saw the movie.
If you do Shenmue II though I would hate you forever since I don’t have an Xbox to play that game on.
As for mods, here’s the list of probably the best singleplayer mods:
MINERVA – the guy who made this got hired by Valve and is now helping make Episode Three.
Research and Development – arguably the best singleplayer HL2 mod. It’s mostly puzzles with some action, but you never receive a gun once throughout the entire thing.
Rock 24 – actually made by a pair of ex Eidos level designers. A personal favorite mod of mine. Basically just an extra five or six HL2 chapters with Gordon rescuing a scientist from a prison inside a collapsing mountain.
Dear Esther – not a game per se but more of an experiment in interactive narrative. Very interesting and worth checking out.
Korsakovia – the followup to Dear Esther. Basically a horror adventure in the vein of Silent Hill.
Please consider the first left for dead game for the next game club game. The game of the year addition was recently released and it is readily available. It would be a change of pace to provide some feedback for online coop tactics – how to survive the favorite survival mode levels.
