Shortened work day + Rebel FM = great way to start the weekend.

    HuzzAH!

  5. Iceveiled says:

Shoe!! I know this is going to be a great podcast! Related to Dante’s Inferno, I played the demo last night and enjoyed it. I’ve heard it compared to god of war for a year now and, wow, it can’t be described as anything other than a blatant, obvious rip off. But a darned good one. Nothing wrong with more God of War.

Imitation is the best form of flattery, right?

    Half-Blood Penis!

  6. calvin says:

Anthony, youve convinced me to go pick up Silent Hill on Wii. Fingers crossed my location bothered to stock it, Dead Space Extraction was extremely hard to track down.

  7. Peter W says:

Dante’s Inferno is one of my most anticipated games. I can’t wait to see what they do with each circle of hell. Even if it is just a God of War clone, the 360 needs some love too.

  8. Matthew Reynolds says:

Just a quick heads up for my annoyance at the lack of a proper spoiler warning with Fallout 3 at 34:40. You probably should have given more of a break with the announcement. Granted it’s been out for over a year, but some of us have yet to play.

Thanks, and keep up the good work as always.

  9. Iceveiled says:

I pretty much agree with everything that was said regarding comparing Dante and God of War, except for arthur’s argument that the combat feels more impactful in Dante. The Dante’s Inferno demo dosen’t really offer enough play time to make my own judgement on that so I really can’t agree or disagree.

Either way i’m looking forward to both titles. I do like how Dante’s Inferno let’s you branch down a good or evil path, which is obviously not a new concept, but is at least interesting in this type of game. I can’t wait to go down the dark path and hurl inverted crosses every which way. >:)

  10. Iceveiled says:

I would also like to add that in god of war you’re not committed to any combos once you start them. You can hit block and that will immediately end any combo. That’s pretty much the only way you can play the game on the highest difficulty as the tougher enemies won’t let you combo them at all.

  11. Iceveiled says:

This is what I get for not saving my comments until I’ve finished the podcast in it’s entirety, but I just had to laugh when Arthur was complaining about the 360 getting shafted (in talking about the Dante’s Inferno PS3 exclusive collectors edition).

You know, I’d rather have the GTA DLC than a dante’s inferno collectors edition, thank you very much. Not to mention the dozens of half-assed ports the PS3 has received which the average dumbass consumer equates to an inferior system, NOT inept programmers.

Good to see the 360 guys writhing for once. Welcome to the last 3 years of being a PS3 fan.

  12. Rickenbacker says:

Hey Arthur, on the baldness topic for a second, it’s cool to see you did the J. Allard thing and started shaving at the dawn of the 360. My question to you as a man myself on the verge of baldness myself with a hairline that’s going further and further back, how do you handle the daily routine?

I mean, just shaving facial hair gets kind of irritating on a daily basis, what are some tips for covering the whole head on a regular case? I never really looked into it, and the topic springing up seemed like a relevant enough time for me to pop the question.

  13. AndyS says:

I had cancer/chemo five years ago. At that point I decided that as I lose my hair I’m going to have no trouble shaving. It’s actually very low maintenance. I sometimes wish I would do it again, but then I’d have all these sympathetic/concerned questions from people who knew I had cancer assuming I am sick again.

Black guys figured this out years ago. Don’t try to fight it, just shave. Don’t do the white guy comb over. Either keep it short or shave it.

  14. CodyH says:

Awesome episode. Really loved hearing about the new EGM from Hsu and Matt.

  15. Dan Barker says:

Why does no one digg the episodes?

  16. Arlen says:

Nice to her Matt C and Shoe in the same podcast again.

I just bought PixelJunk Shooter last night, and Matt’s right, it’s a blast. Very simple shooter with a unique premise.

I agree with Arthur about God of Wars hit mechanics. You flail around 3-4 times, with enemies standing there unflinchingly until the last hit of the combo. Most enemies will only react to hits every 2-3, which gives off the impression that they’re just standing around, occasionally attacking and once in awhile your tornado of pain causes them to fall over.

It’s why I prefer Ninja Gaiden’s fighting system, (although the story makes zero sense,) the human-esc. enemies flinch or stumble everytime they get hit, as well as you. You’re on an even playing field.

  17. Jose says:

Holy fucking christ! I know I’m going to catch shit as soon as I post this comment, butt-fuck it! I have NO boner for seanbaby. In fact I find him quite anti-penis in general. I love you all, and do not understand all the cooing that took place when he was mentioned. Icky!

    • Pajama Sam says:

WHAT?!?! Seanbaby is awesome. Speaking of him though, I really wish more Broken Pixels would be made…

      • listerfeend says:

HOLY SHITTING BALLSACKS! Jose doesn’t have to read anything written by seanbaby! I enjoy him. I’d even go so far as to say most of what he does is hilarious to me. Go back and listen to his episodes on 1UP Yours.

  18. Nick H. says:

Whoa! I wasn’t really paying attention to the music notes, and thought Them Crooked Vultures said Them Crooked Penis!

  19. Hooberschmit says:

I have one thing to say… the equivalent of a gamestop in canada is actually.. a gamestop. the only thing is they all still say EB games on the top of them. Futureshop is a bestbuy basically.

    • Konanda says:

Nice reference to Steven Blum. Awesome voice actor I loved his work as Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop), The Laughing Man (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), Darcia (Wolf’s Rain) but I digress and I don’t think most people reading this would have any ideas of who those characters are due to intense and illogical hatred of anime probably based of the wrong belief that all of it is something like the parody in the latest GTA4 pack. Even if the 20% (which is about the same for any entertainment medium) or so that doesn’t suck (like the titles I referenced) haters will still find something like Queen’s Blade to justify their hate.

Anyway to get back to games I hear he’s supposed to be voicing Lucifer in Dante’s Inferno.
I’m still kind of torn on buying that game though since it looks really intriguing in terms of the setting, combat and enemies but given that I’m going to have to sit through some terrible story that is nothing like the actual first part of Dante’s Divine Comedy (Inferno) I think I would just decide screw this shit I’m going to go play Bayonetta or God of War 3.* Seriously when they say loose they mean the story has a guy named Dante, the soul of Virgil and Dante’s ideal woman named Beatrice (who doesn’t even get mentioned until the very end of the second part of the Divine Comedy [Purgatorio]) and there is nine circles of hell that are themed around grevious sins in medieval times and given the type of game it is I bet the bosses will be a prominent figure that is mentioned to be in that circle of hell in the original Inferno. That is where any similarity to the poem ends. (At least based on what has been released of the story including the demo and just the premise of the gameplay itself.)

*I’m not saying Darksiders on purpose because from what I have read/seen of it, while still having some Devil May Cry/God of War style combat, puzzles seem to be a big part of the game as well and I’ve heard it described by the creative director as a Legend of Zelda kind of game with dungeons that contain said puzzles and an overworld connecting them to explore

Ya there are a few gamestops here but Hoobershmit said for the most part they still are branded as EB Games. I assume it’s the same kind of situation in the U.S.A. where there is EB Games as well as Gamestop with probably more EB Games in the northern and eastern states (given EB Games started in Pennsylvania and more Gamestops in the southern and western states. (given Gamestop is from Texas)

Futureshop as Hoobershmit also said is like Best Buy and has also been owned by Best Buy since 2001.

  20. XaiaX says:

    Banjo – Game Club.

    Make it happen.

  21. Little Lucky Lloyd Lucious Leftfood Long says:

Arthur is a role model for all of us bald men. Bow to the master. Keep reppin’ for god’s most hated! Holla…

  22. Ian says:

I don’t mind paying for EGM so that others can enjoy some or all of it for free.

I purchased Torchlight knowing that I was helping to fund the development of a free-to-play MMO and it doesn’t bother me in the least that others will benefit from my investment.

My plan is to pay for what I love and appreciate and if someone else doesn’t feel that way then, more than anything, I kinda just feel sorry for them.

  23. XaiaX says:

    Mr. Chandronait is correct.

My 50-year old (step)dad loves Medal of Honor on the PS2. He plays those games, and Tiger Woods.

I got him CoD4 after I upgraded the FUCK out their computer, and I think how it looks blew his mind. Not sure if he’s actually playing that, though, he was having a bitch of a time getting through the first mission. (That escape sequence was fucking him up, maybe I should figure out how to map a 360 controller to the controls for that, since he does play the hell out of Medal of Honor)

    • Myckel Soto says:

There are now hacked drivers and software that allows for play with Playstation 3. I’m sure it would be more comfortable since he does like to play Medal of Honor for the PS2. The 360 controller would probably be more reliable.

      • Myckel Soto says:

for play with a Playstation 3 Controller*. Sorry for not reading my damn comment before posting. I am so used to Giant Bomb and their edit button.

  24. Ian says:

On going bald: If/when my precious locks ever crumble and die then I will tattoo my barren head to match that of Homer Simpson’s iconic squiggle and top-lines.

  25. SJS says:

    Great special guests.

    Nice.

  27. Lazlo10111 says:

Yes, we have GameStop in the Great White North.
We also have EBGames. They are associated with each other, and are basically just different brands of the same entity…

Anyway, i have been blessed by the goddess with a beautiful head/beard of hair which i have been letting grow since i got laid off. I sed to myself “im gonna grow this beard until someone pays me to cut it off”
Here’s what it looks like after 6 months…

    http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j1/lazlo23/Picture82.jpg

I have several friends that have ‘the curse’ and are jealous of my luxurious locks (i am called “hairfarm” as a term of endearment/ridicule) . My plan is to let it grow really long and then donate my hairs to one of those wigs for charity.

I do feel for my bald brethren but really hate to see the balding ponytail. It just makes me sad. As for tattooing yer skull, i think it would be killer if you tattooed the Homer Simpson ‘hairstyle’. that would be tough.

please continue with the non-videogame tangents and love advice letters for i feel it hilarious that there are people seeking advice from two single gamer dudes.

Anyway, feel free to make fun of me on my friends podcast site.

    thanks,

  28. Dattebayo says:

I stopped listening to the podcast after around episode thirty (around the time you all were going absolutely insane with the whole ‘fat penis’ thing) but it appears you have completely phased it out of the podcast and so I will continue to listen whenever you have an episode out.

Fat penis was funny but now it’s just weird. In text it is fine because I can skim over it but in a podcast I’ve got to manually skip over the parts you are talking about it because it just isn’t funny.

    Keep up the good work.

  29. Feanor says:

If the guys on the podcast want to see why games like Dante’s Inferno do benefit from 60 fps, play the 360 version of Bayonetta and then play the PS3 version.

Although, 60 fps might not matter so much in Dante’s if the combat doesn’t require you to be that precise with your timing.

  30. will cao says:

Hey love the show. I’m also suffering from God’s hate. But I’ve come to terms with it. It just sucks that it’s happening so soon (I’m 23).

So I was thinking about upgrading my internet service. I live in San Francisco and wondering if there was a better alternative than comcast? Right now I’m using shitty DSL. I want to upgrade my internet before I start using netflixs off my ps3 or 360.

p.s. Where is Tyler Barber at?

  31. Jake says:

I did end up getting addicted to moonshine during the Mothership Zeta DLC.

  32. Jim in Erie says:

Why is there like 10 minutes of nonsense at the end of this podcast?

  33. Shobakistan says:

Did you guys use different compression for this episode. The song at the begining sounds fucked.

  34. Jose Ortiz says:

Nice to hear about the EGM deal with bitmob. Hope we don’t loose their podcast with this though.

  35. Graham says:

    40:20 to 40:34

Why do i put up with your crap? seriously I wanna a answer.

When you guy profess to be PC, You without a care say derogatory things about people. Plain people.

I’m tired of listenin, knowing that somebodies going to blurt out something unnecessary to the conversation like that. Really. Screw the jokes, your sentiments have been consistent about hillybillies, or hipsters or religious people. I don’t want to hear outrageious opinions on social groups.

It’s a bad topic to bring up in gaming show.

I guess I’m just one of those people who can’t hate people with you.

    • Sam B says:

After everything else they’ve said you flip out at a comment like “kill all the hillbillies”? naturally this wouldn’t be the case.

      Take your whining elsewhere

    • Sam B says:

dammit not saving, also learn how to spell then try it again. Cept you could say the comment was rather, outrAGIES ahah *badoom tish* seriously though, quit winging. Your just like those people that complain about violence in video games then read a book or watch a movie about a gory bloodbath.

Learn to pick your battles better and if you had no idea what you were listening to with the 70+ podcasts released until now, all I can say is daaaaaaaaaaaaamn.

  36. Graham says:

Sure I’ll take the criticism for not picking my battles better. Hillbillies? I’m not a hillbilly but I read this stupid sentiment off of them specifically towards peoples that they think their not talking to.

I have been around since episode 1 right but I’ve had difficult moments with more episodes recently and I try to stow my net rage. hehe. I’m being sensitive and should just quit if things are still getting under my skin.

You are just as “cept”ible to “winging” about bad spelling but it’s just both of us rushing.

I’m about over this all. I just get … so .. angry. OutrAGIES is a meme waiting to happen. He just can’t be pragmatic enough to save his own face. He’s like the shane bettenhausen of xbox.

  37. Andy says:

Anthony: Why did you upgrade to a DSi?

    • Andy says:

Also: What are you playing Fallout 3 on?

      • XaiaX says:

Some quick internet stalkery reveals it’s the 360 version.

Here’s a quick internet stalkery tip:

        live.xbox.com/en-US/profile/profile.aspx?pp=0&GamerTag=

Just put the gamer tag at the end of that to find out what they’ve been playing. I have it on the PC, and his achievements don’t match against mine, which means he’s on the 360.

Ah, the internet. Stalkers’ best friend.

  38. Anthony says:

I upgraded to a DSi only to play DSi Ware. I still have my old DS around for my GBA games, though. And yeah, i’m playing Fallout on the 360.

  39. Hippty Hop Harold says:

You guys need to combine with the Gaint Bomb staff for one super-duper podcast…make it happen.

  40. Aeshir says:

Don’t you guys think it’s time to change the background image? I thought it was an old ad until I started listening from episode one a few days ago. In keeping with the theme of the podcast, I suggest this image:

  41. watkinzez says:

Kinda late, but much love to whoever had the Home Sweet Home ringtone. <3<3

  42. Jon says:

I think it’s a fine word to use when describing a game (it’s not anywhere near ‘compelling’ in either the overused or meaningless stakes!) – it just means, and I suspect you know this just fine, that whilst it might not have any glaringly bad areas, neither does it have anything particular great to recommend it on.

I have to say I’ve rarely seen it used to describe a single game in totality, but usually as a member of a genre. For instance I’m pretty sure I read a review that described Bioshock’s shooting as competent, because whilst the shooting mechanics were ok (not bad) they weren’t great. So the context you say you want, is provided by other existing games in that genre (e.g in light of Little Kings Story, the shooting in Bioshock is workaday).

At that point you could ask about the target-audience issue the podcast guys have talked about a couple of times in the past, but dude, you’re listening to a video game podcast – the target audience is people who like games, people who won’t have a hard time gaining context for what makes a particular game competent imo.
