Greetings and welcome to Rebel FM Episode 44! This week we eschew the middle segment entirely as we start off talking about Bayonetta, Army of Two:TFD, Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes and more, then move on to a doublewide letters segment including one host’s secret concert shame.
This week’s music, in order of appearance:
Criteria – It Happens;
Florence & the Machine – My Boy Builds Coffins

aww dont let that near perfect score get you down. we all still love you.
I gotta say, porn in HD is quite amazing
indeed
What’s a buttsecks?
loved the music talk.im with tyler on wishing i could have seen NIN live..but i didnt know they toured with APC…shit…im jealous
Yeah, the music talk was awesome… Creed and Nickelback, dam it Arthur. I am so happy I traveled up to Auckland to see NIN at the start of this year. It was the first time they had come to NZ since 2000 (and probably the last
).
Subtitle spoilers is something that I find really annoying.
And as other people mentioned the podcast seems to abruptly end in the middle of the talk about podcast equipment.
I will say, in his defense, My Own Prison is a pretty great album.
Wow, I thought I was the only one that hated how subtitles “spoil” the dialogue. I wish games would give us the option to change the latency on those things.
did the podcast just abruptly end in the middle of a letter for anyone else? or is it just me
Same thing here.
Yep, I’m guessing they’ll re-release it or something on iTunes soon.
Could we please get a post or at least a twitter about the re-release, otherwise I will forget between work (where I am now) and home.
Some sort of reminder that the full version is out would be good.
Thanks in advance
@thevamp, nope same thing for me cut out during the letter from the guy asking about recording a one off podcast.
Funny coincidence that the letter about recording equipment ends abruptly. I need my last few minutes of RFM!
Arthur, since you so bravely admitted it I will too.
I’ve have seen Nickleback Live. Granted I was forced into it by friends but still. Plus most of the early Creed Singles I enjoy and never doubt Evanescence. The Power of Amy Lee knows no bounds.
But I would have really killed someone to have gone on the NINJA tour. Have always wanted to see NIN and Jane’s Addiction live but alas it will never be.
NIN/JA was awesome. I’m just sad I got there kind of late and missed Street Sweeper.
It was not as awesome as seeing Marilyn Manson open for NIN, with a middle act of the Jim Rose Circus. Especially when you’ve never heard of Marilyn Manson, and he comes out in a top hat and does the boat scene from Willy Wonka and then strips down to rubber pants with a big black dong hanging out.
That was fucking ENTERTAINMENT, right there.
I lost a shoe in that pit.
I read somewhere that Trent Reznor said he might continue touring into 2010, since he was having so much fun. Could be total BS, but god I hope not.. I would love to see NIN in concert.
My first real concert was Tool, and that was an awesome experience. Their light show was amazing.
Tool is another band that I must see live.
dude….u are lucky.im saving up for tool just in case they start touring again.i need to see them live.them..and mastodon i want to see live
Saw them a couple years back and they are awesome live. Brann is a sight to behold playing the drums.
Though recently I’ve heard they don’t play Blood and Thunder live anymore which is a shame.
Don’t worry, man. Tool will be touring again with their next album. They just take a loooong time to release new stuff, which is ok in my book. Every album of theirs has its own unique flavor.
Undertow (discounting their first EP due to lack of experience with it) was really angry and dirty, kinda sloppy, really. Aenima was angry but a lot cleaner than Undertow. Lateralus was a nice mix of hard music, crazy time signatures, and a cerebral tone and somewhat cryptic lyrics. 10,000 Days was spiritual.
Wonder what their next album will be like..
if u haven’t heard their Opiate cd..go buy it…NOW!!!
Ooooh ya, couldn’t remember the name of it. I have heard it though.
I’m usually alone on this but I think over the past year or two 10,000 Days has become my favorite album from them. I mean Rosetta Stoned is one of my favorite songs of all time now.
I totally agree with Arthur that Forza 3 is way more fun than NFS Shift. And I drive in cockpit view most of the time in Forza, which goes contrary to what most people are saying when comparing the 2 games, i.e. that if you like cockpit view then you should play Shift. There is something wrong with the driving physics in Shift. I play Forza 3 with all the assists turned off and the driving feel so natural and rewarding, and smooth thanks to the 60FPS). There is enough feedback which is one thing lacking from so many driving games) that you can feel when the car start sliding so you can adjust the throttle and steering and control the slide. It’s so much fun.
Man, Heroes of Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes on the DS. I left a comment about that game being a potential nominee for DS game of the year 2 weeks ago in the podcast comments thread. Sad face.
Another game that seems to have been ignored, this time in the Downloadable Game category is Trine.
Playing The Saboteur made me think that there might be a niche there for a Spy Games/The Good Sheperd type (the movies) cold war CIA vs. KGB, moving people across frontiers/doing spy stuff in hostile territory open world franchise to be created, maybe inspired by actual events a la Assassin’s Creed 2. What do you think?
Oh and Avatar, go see it (in IMAX 3D). Made me totally rethink what 3D can do for immersion in movies and games. I wouldn’t even call it 3D anymore but “natural vision” as it’s so granular that it recreates our natural 3D vision from a 2D flat display screen. If 3D games can deliver the same experience then all those new 120MHz TVs and polarized glasses do not seem so silly anymore.
wow. I totally agree 100%. I’ve been extremely frustrated with all the praise Shift has been getting. I was very much looking forward to it, then when I played it – it was like I was playing a different game from what I was hearing about.
Shift gives you all the graphical bells and whistles of making you feel immersed in the driving experience, but the lack of a good physics system makes it completely hollow. The game does not feel good.
You had a perfect example about knowing when you’re about to start sliding in Forza. I agree to the letter. It’s something Forza does so well, and Shift does so bad. Imagine that applied to everything.
I’m so glad Arthur talked about this.
I agree with you on Avatar. The 3D was much better than I was expecting. If games could be like that, then I would definitely give 3D games a try.
VOOOT VOOOT VOOOT PEDANTRY ALERT
Peggle runs only at 800×600, the 3d acceleration on it is just used for scaling to make it run smoother. It’s only 4×3. If your monitor doesn’t support 4:3 it’ll stretch it out and if the screen is 16:10 (1440×900 is 16:10) then the difference isn’t great, so you might not realize it’s stretched as much if it were a 16:9 monitor. (16:10 / 4:3 can compare as 8:5 vs. 8:6)
1280×960 is 4×3, it’s 640(x2) x 480(x2)
You are not alone Arthur.
I too have seen Nickelback live.
May the god of wang bestow a fat penis upon you all.
I gotta thank you guys for splicing in My Boy Builds Coffins, it’s a motherfucking fantastic song.
Nickelback is profoundly sucky. Talking about horrible music, i think most of the music in the Rebel FM’s breaks are also fucking pieces of shit except the intro. I do like stuff like The Who, The Cramps and Velvet Underground. And i definitly like me some Jimmy Hendrix.
Ugh tastes differ but why don’t you let Anthony make some silly songs and use those?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7F3O6WYfHQ&feature=related
You had me up until you called all of the music I put in the breaks “fucking pieces of shit.” I figure at this point I’ve put enough different kinds of music (some of which have been chosen by Anthony or Tyler) in that if you couldn’t find one thing in there that you liked, we’ll just never agree on music. Although man, I’d be really curious to hear current music that you think is good.
Also, I find The Cramps boring and reliant on being offensive to conventional music tastes and “crazy.” So, take that as you will.
“we’ll just never agree on music”
That’s a quick assumption after just after a few names. It’s not like i only listen to 4 bands.
“Although man, I’d be really curious to hear current music that you think is good.”
I bet there is something out there we both like.
However i’m behind on the latest releases, i’m still working my way through stuff my friends and family recommended. I’m discovering The Beatles, Drexciya, Deltron and oter stuff.
Latest Eels album was great, Triggerfinger and their latest What Grabs Ya, dEUS with Vantage Point. You’ll notice some Belgian bands you never might have heard of. I don’t stick to one genre, it’s easy to get a sort of tunnelvision on the things you like. I consider that to be a bad trait.
By the way how don’t get in trouble by using copyrighted music?
One other thing i have to say, you’re DIRT 2 comparison to Mario Kart was spot on. I’m not much of a racing game fanatic, i watch some rally races at best. And DIRT 2 is the first racing game in years, since the early Crash Bandicoot Racing on the PS1, that was fun for me to play. Most racing games are like the fighting game to me. I suck at them but seeing an expert in action makes it look so amazing and so much fun.
You easily have put music that caters to many different crowds.
I mean from Tegan & Sara, to Them Crooked Vultures, to Opeth.
All grounds have been covered.
You know what, paste some Nickelback in there, it’s like elevator music to me. It’s all so shitty it becomes background noise.
I don’t like Tegan & Sara, Them Crooked Vultures is not really being good at one thing it’s trying to much it’s like Brutal Legend. And i don’t like Opeth at all.
Cool story, bro.
I have absolutely no problems with the music selection for the podcast. I can understand if someone doesn’t get the music, or even if they think it’s shit, but equating the bumper music to the aural abortion that is Nickelback is pretty much an atrocity. I’ve taken the liberty of notifying the UN.
I fucking love me some Tegan and Sara, and the new St. Vincent is my favorite album of the year. And yes, I still consider myself a heterosexual male, thankyouverymuch.
“but equating the bumper music to the aural abortion that is Nickelback”
Now they finally have the perfect boxquote for their next cd
I’m always bitching about the music. I just want more variety, but then again the podcast is free, it’s on a device I carry with me filled with thousands of songs I do like, and iPods have a click-wheel FF that takes approximately one second to use. That being said, I do mostly listen to the music out of sheer laziness and I just don’t enjoy it on account of my dislike of everything. I guess I just don’t understand you kids and your modern rock and/or roll. Arthur, do you not like rap musics? There is plenty of hip hop out there beyond the commercial bullshit. Plus listening to underground hip hop artists buys you street cred if only in your own mind (like me). Tell you what, I’ll meet you in the middle– Deftones off the White Pony album.
When Arthur is talking about his first concert being Marilyn Manson and L7 it sounds like he says that it was on the Antichrist Superstore tour (rather than Antichrist Superstar, obviously).
Is it just me or does an Antichrist Superstore sound awesome?
Oh you know there is a store called that somewhere in the world.
The one stop shop for all your Antichrist needs
Hey Arthur, I hope you weren’t talking bad about NHL 10. If so, shut your mouth!
Yeah, NHL 10 is such a fantastic game, I was amazed when Arthur said it was awful. Everyone I know who watches hockey loves playing it. They took last year’s excellent game and tightened up the gameplay a good deal. I really don’t know what would make Arthur dislike it, unless maybe he’s not into hockey that much. It’s right up there with Dragon Age as my favourite game of 2009.
I don’t think he specified the name of the game (for some reason). I assume he was talking about NHL 2K10.
Yeah I’m sure it was NHL 2k10 because that game is awful. I couldn’t see how someone could say that about NHL 10, being a better version than last years and last years was sports game of the year. I would agree they need to overhaul the graphics engine though.
But I agree with everything you said about GTA 100%.
Right? I’ve never understood why so many people love them. Jankiest games I’ve ever played, and nobody ever mentions how terrible the graphics are. In addition, if they don’t completely overhaul the engine for the next game, I’m not getting it.
Not all of us play games for graphics. Also, the GTA games don’t look as great as some other games because of the massive, seamless open worlds that they take place in. You sacrifice some graphical detail to fit that kind of stuff in memory.
I can understand the draw to that, but when the media went nuts about how amazing GTAIV was, I had to step away and just kinda.. observe. That was a strange time, and I wonder how many reviewers would look back and think twice about the scores they gave that game.
I’m not trying to sound douchey or anything, but anyone can get caught up in the hype surrounding a game. Personally, I think getting involved in the hype of a game is kinda fun; it’s fun to be a part of a large cultural event like that.
Anyway, Anthony often says he would reconsider some of the scores he gave the games he reviewed. I’m sure he’s not alone.
I never understood why some people like having girls pee on them, but it happens and the internet is filled with evidence of it. I love the hell out of GTAIV. I also like having my mouth peed into.
My network at work blocks libsyn so I cant download, anyone know a mirror I can dl from?
iTunes? Zune?
At a small party I was once witness to a girl peeing on a dude. Story goes, dude wanted to get pissed on for some unheard of reason, asked the girl after a few drinks to do the deed, she agreed, they went to a bathroom, he laid down in the bathtub face up, while still in her dress she removed her panties, climbed up on the edges of the tub, stood/squatted over his face and let it rip all while a few of us were watching at the door busting up. Its a strange world we live in…….
(/Story time)
0.o ………ok?
I’m wondering who was more drunk in this situation.
Assuming you read this Anthony, the Brains quest is located in the same area you have to light the pumpkins in and where you first meet Dr. Zed. I think it was called Hollow’s End something anyway when you get in there go to that area with the run down houses and stuff and explore around there a bit eventually you’ll find a little alcove with a shack and a certain person will make a nice cameo. He is the quest giver for Brains, which is a series of fetch quests starting from getting him 10 brains. Note any brains you collect before the quest don’t count.
Also to the Bayonetta talk congratulations on being the first group I’ve heard/seen to talk bad about it. Anyway I’m still excited for it since it’s been awhile since I played Devil May Cry 4. (I don’t like God of War I find the way it trys to integrate mythology into their story childish and somewhat inaccurate at times and all the super violence is kind of meh to me) Anyway it’s been getting very positive reviews so far. Just in case anyone was wondering.
I see you like awful music Arthur…that’s cool. Hell I have all of Master P’s albums.
But may I interest you in the Bob Dylan Christmas album? My boss recently tortured me with this ‘cacophony of crap’.
Hey Rebel, stop apologizing for the show!! it is what it is and if people dont like it they can go! you have nothing to apologize for. This is your show, now do it your way. personally i like it when the cats raise hell, and when you say balls! Hey when are we getting a new background? anyway keep it up!! cheerz
K.
I agree. There is no need to apologize for anything. The off-topic stuff is why I listen.
Yeah definitely, I keep listening because of these things and because of you guys so just do the show the way you have been doing it and screw the people who don’t like it
i’ve had rendezvous with woman.
When Creed came here (Edmonton, Sevendust was still opening up for them. When Creed came out to start their set, everyone started shouting for Sevendust to come back out. It was epic!
Hehe, the electrons in you brain firing…
Tyler, “PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe” for PSP is a more content-filled version…and it’s portable. The PS3 version is still excellent, though, and I suppose it’s also portable if you count Remote Play. You could also add some of the extra content with PixelJunk Monsters Encore.
PixelJunk Shooter bears more than a passing resemblance to Sub-Terrania on the Genesis, youtube it. BTW, it has some of the best music ever heard on the Genesis, easily up there with the SOR 2 ost.
Well, now that I have replied to many other posts, I can get to the reason I originally showed up in the first place. When I was stationed in Germany back in ’99 a rock band came to base to put on a show. I didn’t want to go but my friend had an extra ticket. It was The Goo Goo Dolls. I ended up getting kicked out for throwing beers at the bass player. BUT HE LOOKED LIKE HE REALLY WANTED A BEER.
Damn it, I forgot: Killer Instinct will forever be one of my favorites. We busted that shit out a few months ago and one of my friends still remembered Ultra combos. What a dork.
I love the rewind feature in Forza.
Every game should have that!
Arthur, did you ever play Sega Rally?
That game made me frustrated and aggressive.
It is ridiculously hard, unforgiving and IMO unfair.
But yet, I still put it in from time to time…
I gave you guys five stars on itunes.
Screw the idiots that gave you one star reviews.
It ended during the equipment discussion for me too. Has this been fixed? Or did it not get recorded at all?
I seem to recall Tyler was playing with some cables that he wasn’t supposed to earlier in the show. Coincidence?
Aaw man. When I heard it was a double-wide letter segment, I was so excited because I thought my letter’d get read.:-(
Anyway, awesome show as always, guys. Keep up the good work.
i think tyler said he missed the collecting brains quest. if anyone else needs to get the quest or wants help collecting the brains from the 1st dlc for borderlands let me know. i still need to finish this quest and would welcome the help.
i am willing to help anyone who needs it just let me know.
The guilty pleasure part was the funniest thing I’ve heard on RFM.
i agree its nice that you can choose not to use the replay in Forza 3, but i disagree with Arthur that you “play a racing game to come in 1st”, you like Forza because if you want its a game you cant lose at. that’s not fun at all. “hey Im behind in Madden, let me just hit the auto touchdown button”. You really cant savor a victory if there is no chance of defeat. Who doesn’t like a well earned unbeaten streak i na game, but its also fun to lose once i na while. I loved playing the team i lost to again in super tecmo bowl ,they became my rivals!
I mean to each his own. But as much as Need for Speed sucks without replay, infinite replay sucks just as bad to me, why bother? and i am probably only Anthony’s level of racing gamer, as in I don’t play racing games. Im no master that wins every race. i played f-zero, destruction derby, mario kart, test drive eve of destruction… not much else race wise ever… but i enjoyed dirt 2. (I won it free off Gamespot otherwise wouldn’t have touched it). In any kind “competition” game (sports, puzzles, etc…) lots of times its the challenge that kept me coming back.
Imagine peggle or plants vs zombies if you could rewind every time you messed up… not fun. i understand that one or two races where you just cant win can get frustrating, and you want to move on, but chuff said it best that you can place 3rd and move on. and dirt 2 giving you 3 redos is fair. if you don’t beat it with 3 redos then you are not a good enough racer for the next event anyway.
I just dont see why you’d want to play if you know your going to get 1st every time… What do you think, is the redo mechanic like the “easy death system” of games like bioshock or the new prince of persia? did that no penalty death hurt those games for you? I always felt like i was cheating a little…. Again you can turn it off so its okay, Im not saying forza is bad, i was just weirded out by Arthur’s “win 1st or go home” attitude with a race game, i feel more like chuff with the “third’s still a medal” feeling.
I guess there was never an answer on why the podcast abruptly ends?
I’ve an inspirational tale about going bald. First, a little back story. I had a full head of hair and never really thought about going bald until a few more-bald-than-me-but-not-bald asshole friends pointed out that what I called a “widows peak” was actually a receding hairline. Like anyone when they first hear that they’re going bald, I totally denied it. But then I started to have Arthur-esque moments where I noticed via surveillance cameras that I was indeed going bald. Rock bottom sadness hit.
Fortunately, we had a head-shaving day at work for charity soon after this realization. I was on the fence, torn between holding onto my hair while I still could or forsaking it for a life of baldness. Being an opportunistic man, I was conversing with some lovely ladies from work asking them what they would think if I shaved my head. A new girl who was quite possibly one of the hottest girls I’ve ever had the pleasure of speaking with was the first to chime in.
Her answer, “I’d think you’d look cute.”
My insta-reponse, “So, you’d go out with me if I shaved my head?”
The girl, “(giggle) Maybe.”
Five minutes later my head was shaved clean, my scalp glistening white from never seeing the sun. Suffice to say, I never went “out” with the girl per say, but I’m a gentleman and I’ll leave it at that. Though I will say that I’ve had some of the greatest pimpin’ moments of my life since I’ve shaved my head.
My head has been shaved for 2.5 years and wish I would’ve done it sooner. Maybe it wasn’t just the hair that I was shedding, but the baggage of trying to hold onto my youth. The bottom line – what was initially devastating news actually turned into a godsend. I’ve never said this, but thank you baldness.
P.S. I also haven’t paid for a haircut, just one set of clippers, in that same time span.
in regards to that “emotional cheating” crazy social situation letter, may i add that intimacy is a very interesting thing. being intimate is not necessarily sexual and sexual relations are not necessarily intimate. please don’t let the media and society dictate what types of relationships you have with others, we are human and are capable of very complex relationships. fat penis.
Hey guys,
Just wanted to say I’ve been a huge fan of the show, and wanted to give props to some of the music choices… I’ve found some great bands because of you guys, most recently being Criteria, so thank you TONS for that!
I thought I’d share a couple of Bands that have really inspired me, hopefully you guys have a chance to check them out:
Wintersleep – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ45UNanMhE
Beast – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nol7e9HJXg&feature=channel
Mother Mother – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBAoLoxJ32Q
All Canadian bands, cause frankly… I think we have some of the best musicians out there
(biased of course).
Is Anthony working on any new tunes as of late?
Thanks again for the great show. Girthy Penis.
- Jay
Hey gents. Don’t let the comment about being tired get y’all down. I know that the time you guys record the show you are exhausted after working. I CAN TOTALLY RELATE TO THAT. It’s cool that you guys still do the show and that’s reassuring to me because I usually listen to the show after a long day of work as well and I’m usually tired so its appropriate for me! Great show Great job! (For Your Health!)
Ah Arthur with the bashing of the great Fox News yet again. And let us not forget that in the same podcast he admitted to going to a Creed concert, the irony here.. Anyways, I’ll still listen because I’m not so uptight that I have to boycott everyone who has a different political leaning (cough:Shadow Complex:cough).
It’s cold outside and lonely inside and there is no Rebel FM this week. Of course there is the archive but where to begin? So how about we list down our favorite Rebel FM podcasts of 2009? Hey maybe even come up with the Rebel FM Podcast of the Year.
For me it’s easy: Rebel FM #8. Robert Ashley joins Tyler as special guests. Hilarity ensues. Probably my favorite podcast of the year period (from the 65 or so in my podcasts feed).
So what’s yours?
Plants vs. Zombies and Peggle/Peggle Nights definitely are NOT widescreen (at least on my MacBook). They both run in 4:3 and the only option is “fullscreen” which just takes you from a windowed 4:3 to a “fullscreen” 4:3. In fact, the ONLY PopCap game with the widescreen option at this point is the new Zuma’s Revenge.
Arthur and Anthony, I can’t believe you haven’t noticed this.
I must thank you guys for choosing Florence & The Machine as one of the songs. The short clip of the song that was used impressed me so much, that I bought the CD.
Now I’m in love with her music.
