No April Fools’ jokes here, just serious gaming business. OK, that’s a partial lie. Join Matt C., Ryan O. and the regular crew as we discuss all kinds of games like Just Cause 2, God of War 3, and all the games we saw at this year’s PAX East. After that, we jump into letters, touching upon a ton of gaming related topics, but very rarely keeping it serious. Enjoy!

Now I can incessantly pester you for the next game club episode!
I finished Metro 2033 yesterday, and was blown away. The last level reminded me so much of Portal. It really reminds me of the fact that games which borrow from other games don’t have to necessarily be crappy clones. Looked phenomenal but ran like crap on my single 5870; was worth it.
Hope someone else on the show has more thoughts on it this episode.
I managed to shake hands with Anthony, Arthur and Tyler this weekend at PAX and tell them how much of a fan of the show I am. It was really cool to meet them all, and I must say that Tyler is the nicest stranger I’ve ever met and both times I bumped into him he actually talked to me a bit and asked how I was liking the show and I now have a total man-crush on him. No wonder the ladies can’t resist the Dirty Tea.
Tyler DOES sound like the ultimate niceguy. But beware, he makes all his ingame RPG characters act like ”Marlo Stanfield” the most notorious fictitious character out there. And Anthony isn’t that much better. His piñatas are fucked from the moment they’re born till the moment they die.
I bet Tyler and Anthony would love that board-game named ”Train”
http://www.fighthatred.com/articles/reports/%E2%80%98train%E2%80%99-a-holocaust-board-game
Red Faction this, Red Faction that….ok we get it, you love average games, shut up about it already.
funny thing about podcasts… you don’t like what people say on them, you don’t have to listen to them. huh… imagine that.
I just bought it this weekend and completed it today, it definitely isn’t average, now go sit in the corner.
You guys should do Thief: The Dark Project as your next Game Club. Seriously. I want some of the young’uns to see what REAL scary is – and to see how they react to cutscene #12
I loved the whole discussion between Ryan and Arthur about Nintendo fucking over their audience.
Personally, I think Arthur is right, and I have become rather pessimistic about all of it. Really, is Nintendo going to listen? I don’t believe so. Unless we stop buying their shit.
I feel the point is, Nintendo doesn’t care very much about the American/European market, and the Japanese are mostly satisfied with Nintendo’s business practices.
Feel free to correct me. What do I know, I haven’t been with nintendo since the NES.
Arthur is right. I don’t know where Ryan got off getting so defensive about it. Nintendo doesn’t think they have to accommodate users who want a better online experience, whether it be purchasing or playing games over the internet. People have been complaining about the shitty “Friend codes” for years, and it isn’t “getting better.”
I think Ryan is just tired of pessimistic attitudes that don’t help situations, like he said. People should be pissed off when they are treated like garbage by corporations and not just take it lying down.
Nintendo’s attitude towards to consumer shouldn’t change that.
I agree with Arthur. Fuck Nintendo and their 90’s ass business models.
Ryan was right though, Nintendo needs to treat their consoles like dumb terminals that allow you to log in and play on any machine. After all you’ve payed for the privilege, probably many times before too.
If the 3DS includes region coding, then sign me up to the Screw Nintendo camp too. I do not want to have to buy an American DS and import everything.
However I think what Ryan was trying to say, was that the Wii is popular because of the casual crowd now. The casual crowd doesn’t care about friend codes, but when the next Nintendo console hits the market, the casual crowd won’t buy it if they find out they can’t keep all their downloaded games. Both of them are right in different ways here.
Arthur was acting like a giant bag of douche. This was basically the argument.
Ryan:
Nintendo should make improvements.
Arthur:
They won’t.
Ryan:
But they have made improvements recently. Maybe we can ask for more.
Arthur:
Those improvements don’t matter. They won’t make improvements so we shouldn’t ask.
Ryan:
But…
Arthur:
They won’t.
It was like listening to an adult talk to a ten-year-old.
Yeah, I generally agree with Arthur’s opinions but he needs to drop the condescending attitude.
Think about it though guys. Without conversations just like this our industry would never be as awesome as it is.
Sure Arthur(and most of the internets) tend to use a wide brush of pessimism on the canvas, but that’s because he holds a passion for that opinion. So does Ryan for his optimism for Nintendo.
We can sit back and think “fan boy slapfight” or even pick a side but in the end look at the stage this whole argument is presented on. Sure Nintendo probably won’t be listening to this podcast(sorry guys), but just imagine how many people who listen to this podcast were influenced and motivated by what was said.
For this I say “Bravo” boys(slow clap, big crowd). I really believe you guys have the best podcast out there. You show your guts, and that’s what counts!
What great timing! This should help me power through my interface design project for school.
Lucky hit…haha Ryan.

Great show, love the Cave In drop. Keep up the good work.
The heated debate between Ryan and Arthur felt like the good old 1UP Yours days. I thought some one was going to flip a table over or something.
For Arthur, apparently they dont really say go fuck yourself in Japanese but i have been informed these two are close enough
Kutabatte shimae! – Go to hell
Totto to kieuseru! – Get lost
I went to the Civ V presentation, too. Dennis Shirk was running the presentation. You were hung over? I was half-asleep. I kept nodding off with my eyes open, but also aware of everything being said. I don’t know what Dennis thought – I was in front row, center.
Everything they showed off I already knew – the only thing new for me was the graphics. Amazing on high end machines, but they said it would scale itself for low end, too.
Arthur, how do you respond to a listener interested in your art by saying “it’s at noneofyourgoddamnbusiness.com”? Your redeeming qualities are becoming fewer and fewer. Try to show some maturity and appreciation to your fans.
I think he was kidding.
I think it’s a bit indicative of how Arthur feels about us. Perhaps the pressures of internet fame are simply too much. This reminds me of an instance in which, slightly before the release of Borderlands, Arthur put out a tweet asking for people to come play with him, ON TWITTER! I didn’t and don’t own it, but I smiled a little to myself at the time I saw the tweet, knowing full well what was coming next. Sure enough, several minutes later came the follow up response to far too many plebes asking Arthur to play, which went along the lines of him intending that tweet for INDUSTRY people, not you, simpleton. I saw it coming, but I couldn’t help but click the un-follow button right then. But that’s Arthur, he’s got some pretty alright opinions on games, but he’s not your homie: listen or don’t, but leave it at that.
I stopped following Tyler when he was praising Kanye West’s music one time. Ick!
And I still follow Anthony. I love him, because he never tweets anything.
Get over it. There is always one crying bitch.
After listening to the show, I now want more debate. Thank you Ryan for bringin’ the heat to a not-so-confrontational bunch (with good reason, long work days etc etc…). Also Arthur is probably just embarrassed to show off his own artwork, I know I get extremely nervous to show off my work to random people, especially in this day and age where “Mangu” is considered high-class artwork.
You guys should talk about Jonah Falcon’s thirteen inch cock in the next episode. Seriously. It’s not a lie. Google it.
(Picard face palm)
What? You were in a magazine or something that showed a picture of your dong, which is apparently the size of a tree trunk. Now you’re posting on the website of a podcast that is fascinated with dicks and you’re surprised that we want to hear the story? Pfft!
Fat penis indeed.
Jonah, you’re the man. Love how you try to hide it. I’d be bringing it up every 6 seconds and working it into every conversation. “Yes, health care reform is very controversial. By the way, have you seen my 13 inch cock?”
Another enjoyable listen. But fuck you for wanting to make me play BF:BC2 when I’m trying to powerlevel my priest in WoW.
Making me want to play BF:BC2 rather. Playing WoW all day makes one dumb.
Seriously, Ryan is such a big queen sometimes. “I JUST DONT THINK YOUR ATTITUDE IS HELPFUL AT ALL!” Sissy fit!
That was the funniest thing I’ve ever heard on RebelFM. I’m glad Arthur and Tyler spoke reason in the face of Ryan’s consumer activism/faith in a benevolent Nintendo.
Regarding gamers consumer activism, I will never forget that steam screenshot of the MW2 “Boycotters” all ingame on MW2 the day of release.
Ryan is going to be first in line to get his chubby little hands on 3DS regardless of whether his precious DSiWare gets activated on it or not.
Well said.
A queen? Chubby little hands? Grow up.
Wwhat problem do you have with someone taking issue with Nintendo screwing consumers? If you can’t complain about it on a podcast then where can you? How does Ryan being pissed at Ninteno make him a loser? I agree with Ryan- what Nintendo is going to do to people is shitty. People shouldn’t just shrug it off.
I would never call Ryan a loser. I think he consistently speaks intelligently and with thoughtfulness. I think everyone agrees Nintendo are screwing consumers. In my opinion Ryan had completely unjustified high hopes Nintendo would change their tune, despite all evidence to the contrary. Then he got all pissy because clearer heads suggested that the leopard was not about to change its spots.
It seemed, to me, that Ryan was more ticked at the level of apathy and negativity in the room. Arthur sort of radiates those vibes nonstop, I can only imagine how trying it must get in person.
And Ryan’s whole point was that Nintendo has made positive strides toward delivering the online experience people want. The addition of the WiiWare and DSiWare stores are examples of this. When the Wii first launched those didn’t exist and there was no way for independent developers to try their hand at developing for the Wii. Also Monster Hunter Tri is another positive step. It’s an online game that you play without friend codes.
Arthur’s attitude was, as I mentioned above, that of a child. He should have just let the grown ups talk for a minute.
Delivering people what they want? Master of illusion, marior and animal crossing themed apps and a fucktonne of cooking games says “Yo here’s something else you can buy, regret then ignore”
When does the God of War 3 discussion begin? That was mostly what I want to hear about but I think I missed it during my first listen at 1.5x speed. The show is so long that it’s really hard to find something if it’s missed.
I think you want last weeks ‘cast matey.
Yeah. They all called Kratos an unlikeable prick, if I recall.
No relationship letters really takes the steam out of the letters segment imo. I hope they comeback in force next week.
Great show as always.
I must agree with Arthur in the great Nintendo Debate. I want my VC/Wiiware/DSiware games to transfer to the next systems as much as the next guy but Nintendo has made it abundantly clear that they don’t give a fuck. I still <3 Ryan though.
Also, it was great meeting Anthony and Tyler in Boston. You guys are class acts. Sadly I missed Arthur but there is always next time.
Keep on rockin' and poop sockin'.
What MS really should do with the dashboard to help wade through the mess of stuff a gamer isn’t interested in is to follow the Amazon model. They already have a valuable commodity of data on what a gamer is interested in. They have every game they’ve played under their gamer tag, what they’ve bought, when they’ve bought (discount periods or not), what they’ve demoed, what their friends are playing, what videos they watch, etc, etc.
Amazon is scarily good at predicting future purchases for me. You can’t tell me that MS can’t at least get in the ball park for Live as well.
If I’ve been playing Battlefield for hours and hours, and my friends are all playing for hours and hours, and Dice decides to release a XBLA game of Battlefield 2043, put that right in the prime spot on the marketing row for me. If I never play shooters but love open world games, and have just completed AC2, put the DLC there.
You know Arthur to add to your point about the helicopters in BF:BC2 being overpowered, you can actually repair the helicopter while being inside of it. You just have to be in one of the passenger seats, where the sides are open, and start repairing, try to go for the side frame nearest to the passenger gunner’s seat. The only problem is it’s a little finicky about where your pointing it. I’ve done this a couple times on the PS3 version don’t know if it’s any different on 360 though.
Have they ever tried giving the Helicopter limited ammo?
Making it so that the Pilot would have to land on a team-controlled helipad for a few seconds in order to replenish ammo.
I wouldn’t know if they ever did it with the helicopters in the other battlefields, since this is only my second battlefield. The other one was Battlefield 1943 and that had no helicopters. But yeah that would be a good idea if they added some limited ammo and resupply points at the chopper pad.
ANOTHER Duke Nukem Forever trailer

You cannot kill Zombie Jesus or this game! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!
Dirty Jobs on Netflix?
Hell yeah! Mike is awesome.
Good call Tyler.
(@ 1:33:17 btw)
Is there a way to find articles you guys have written on IGN? I searched the site for both your names, and all I got back was a biography of Anthony.
http://stars.ign.com/objects/066/066364_biography.html
anyone know where i can find the names of the tracks during the segways?
Another good episode, thanks guys.
Hey Tyler, you should try Relativity and Flotilla on Xbox Live Indie Games, they seem like they both would be right up your alley.
Ryan came across as such a douche. Its one thing for healthy debate, he was being a queen though. I always considered Ryan [TO BE A DELIGHTFUL HUMAN BEING AND REALLY QUITE HANDSOME. I'D CONSIDER HAVING HIS BABIES.]
What’s wrong with being a queen? HMMMMM?
The physical insults are unnecessary and won’t be tolerated. I’ve edited your post accordingly. Be constructive, not an asshole. (Why yes, that was a double standard.)
Who wants to have MY babies, then?
You are so fabulous Jonah
FAB. U. LOUS.
Too much Ryan! I don’t have a problem with him or his opinions, but he really seems to dominate the podcast whenever he is on. That is all. Thanks.
Arthur should have dropped the whole Nintendo thing 10 minutes earlier than he did. He kept on stone walling Ryan with the same responses as Ryan labored to make his points and give examples of why he thought the way he did.
All Arthur had to say would be something like “Those are valid points, and I can see why you are making this conclusion. Regretfully, it’s just my gut feeling stemming from past experiences that make me feel like it’s not going to happen, even despite Nintendo’s recent decisions”.
While Ryan was trying to use logic and examples, Arthur was just going on pure emotion, and acted like his emotions somehow held the same footing as Ryan’s arguments. It was really, really fucking annoying.
Listen to it again, Arthur was saying “I see your point but this is why I think this” the most emotive was Ryan as quite clear by actually hearing the podcast. Is what fucking annoying, but I thought that people connected to the games industry far more than me would be able to see that was a pointless argument.
For all the good it did, the topic: “Microsoft are such fanboy jerks for not making Halo on the PS3″
What was clear from the podcast was that Ryan had a reasoned and thought-out opinion. All Arthur had was a stubbornly negative attitude. How would you feel if every time you were trying to give an opinion someone would interrupt you and say that your opinion doesn’t matter? That’s what Arthur was doing.
So when Arthur agree’s with Ryan and states that he wants what Ryan wants. Ryan said that the DSi has a lot of titles, that may be true, but it’s all filler. The titles that aren’t filler have been available on the iPhone and are also available as PSP Mini’s.
Nintendo’s business structure has always appeared to me to be aimed to casual gamers AND to re-release games saying “Hey guys? Remember the other times we released Ocarina of time? well guess what we’re releasing it again! Oh yeah, you’ll still have to pay for it”
Ryan has said Nintendo has “gotten better” but I don’t believe they are this paragon of forward thinking and progressive logic that Ryan believes they are moving towards.
Ryan came onto Arthur’s, Anthony and Tyler’s podcast as a GUEST. Arthur is a HOST, I’m sure Arthur is in a better position to know Rebel FM’s fanbase and what we like hearing and what we don’t like hearing than Ryan is and visa versa with CO-OP. Arthur seemed to try to steer it back on track whilst agreeing with Ryan but showing a pessimism towards Nintendo that so far Nintendo has down abso-fucking-nothing to amend.
Woah, I see why Ryan is so butthurt about nintendo’s downloadable game problems. This should only bother Wii owners as the DSi store is sp close to a joke it’s not funny. Express magic and cooking games? IGN games of the year! The other actual decent titles are all iPhone games anyway. Why do you think nintendo will care? They’ll sit on their millions and becquite happy saying if you want it, pay for it.
I get why ryan was on arthurs case, but Christ, calm the fuck down. Arthur shares your point but understands like the rest that Nintendo is a JAPANESE company, and since when has anything from japan not been obtuse and punitive in ways the rest if the world are more progressive about.
It was great meeting you guys at PAX. I never could get all three of you together for a pic though. Meetup was great but uber fuckin crowded. Anxiously awaiting the next PAX East and you guys need your own dedicated Rebel FM meetup.
I enjoyed the nintendo debate between Arthur and Aegies, but when Anthony started to move on to another listener letter/subject, I couldn’t help but feel a little awkward when Ryan once again started talking about it again. I thought he was a good addition to the show, but christ, it was a little repetitive. Nothing wrong with having a strong opinion about things, and I do agree that consumers should vote with their wallets more, but jeez….keep your emotions in check.
Oh and here’s a little tip on dealing with helos in BC2. As mentioned, you can hit that shit with a tracer dart. This enables certain Anti-Tank weapons to home in on targets that have been traced. Normally they are “fire and forget”, but when targeting a traced object, they will becoming homing projectiles. I believe it works with the RPG and M2 Carl Gustav, but not the AT4.
Does anybody know if the stationary guns respawn over time like they did in BF2? It seems like they don’t but I’m not 100% sure.
Derrick Schommer on 2old2type podcast was SPOT ON about Nintendo’s utter lack of foresight.
http://www.2old2play.com/News/2old2type_Ep_115__PAXfrica
I SERIOUSLY suggest you listen to Derrick’s rant (about 35 minutes in).
Kausmi’s Stolen Memory is now available!
Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer for free this weekend on Steam
Jordan Lund wrote an article telling Reggie Fils-Aime to shut the fuck up:
http://www.gamestooge.com/2010/04/07/editorial-shut-up-fils-aime/
Think this might be something for the guys to discuss.
Jonah, are you a spam bot or something? You keep posting news articles and waving around frantically hoping that Arthur or Anthony will notice you. Chill the fuck out will you?
Well, he’s demonstrating his endless talents: 13-inch dong, middling journalistic skills… actually, the list seems to end there.
No, not a spam bot. And I suggest YOU chill the fuck out.
Or what? You’ll cock slap me to death?
During the first pee break of Ep 57 they played a short song clip. Can anyone tell me the name of that band?
“Joy Opposites” – Cave-In
“Fly Away From Here” – ???
“Whimsical” – Days Of The New
Please DONT spend 30 minutes talking about the iPad this week like everyone else has. Pleeeaassee
Another fun show, despite the naive politics.
I think it’s pretty clear that people that use the term teabagger (or socialist) these days are political morons…
I actually feel like Nintendo is unlikely to make you re-buy your Wii and DSi download games. I base this on the fact that, in recent times, whenever Nintendo has gone to the next generation of their hardware, it has been nearly fully backwards compatible with their older physical software. The GBA played Gameboy games, the DS played GBA games, and the Wii plays Gamecube games. It seems Nintendo thinks it’s important for you to be able to play your old games on your new gen system (at least until they start revising the hardware). They just haven’t figured out how to do it with the download stuff yet, though the fact that you can link your purchases to your Club Nintendo account is a start. If I had to guess, though, I’d say that Nintendo will eventually make it so you have to deactivate your download games on the previous platform before transferring them to the new console or handheld.
That is a good point (backwards compatibility in hardware) and something I had overlooked.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I want my Rebel FM friday mornings back!
You guys are killing me.
A steady job leaves little time for other activities. I don’t know how many times I’ve started non-work related projects only to have them die for lack of time. I think Arthur said on Twitter it would be up today. Hope we don’t loose the podcast.
Heated debates makes for awesome podcasts.
I’m beginning to fear that the end of rebelfm may be soon coming. Not necessarily this week but in the not too distant future. Hopefully I’m wrong, but in any case thanks guys for what you have done.
I really hope not, I loves me some rebelfm and think that some of the (deserved) success anthony, tyler and arthur are having recently is partly because of rebelfm and the obviously rabid fan base they have and think its not ridiculous to think that if they so wanted they could leverage rebelfm to cement their “following” online and create trust with consumers on IGN and widen their online reach or even break off and make rebelfm a “gaming site” and not a place to park (great) podcasts.
Agreed Morgan. Anthony and Arthur do a great job.
Greeting !! Thanks for your post. A great article that I search today.
Usually I do not read article on blogs, but I wish to say that this write-up very forced me to try and do so! Your writing style has been surprised me. Thanks, very nice post.
