This week we recorded in spaaaaaaaaace! At least, that’s what it sounds like when we recorded at the IGN offices with IGN Editor Dave Clayman and the usual knuckleheads. This week we talk about the Cataclysm Beta, Captain Blood, a horde of Twitter topics, and close out with a few letters rubbed all over everyone’s knees.
This week’s music, in order of appearance:
Nine Inch Nails – Ruiner;
Bush – Come Down;
Foo Fighters – Everlong
Subscribe!
Extra early today, thank you Arthur.
About to go for a walk.
Gonna put this on my iPod and give it a listen.
=)
Not early. Back to normal. At least this week.
Cataclysmic Peni!
Damn, bringing back the 90s I see. How about some Cake love?
Nice and early today.
I second the request for Cake. Also, Marcy’s Playground.
Two requests for Cake? Really people?
I mean, I like bad catchy 90′s tunes as much as the next guy but come on Cake? lol
O_O. Cake is godly. Short Skirt/Long Jacket is one of my favorite songs of all time.
The second you can admit to liking Cake is the second you can begin your life anew, unafraid to admit to liking things that are fun. Remember when things were fun? It was way back when you weren’t dead inside.
Cake is one of those bands that I always enjoyed hearing if a song of theirs came on the radio, but I never actually got around to purchasing any of their albums.
Bit of a Cake nut myself. There’s rarely a song from them that doesn’t make me sing along (terribly).
Nice and early for the UK, thanks.
I LOVE DAVID CLAYMAN!
WOOOOOOOOOO. Davey!
we get it.
Stop having all these IGN editors on the podcast. Nobody wants to hear from these hacks.
Dave Clayman was hilarious and fit right in with the rest of the guys. You can’t pigeon hole all the IGN guys because of Scott Bromely….hes special.
I’m very worried about RF: Armageddon being a little too Dead Space-y. It might benefit from a bit more focus however. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Yo another great show…havin different ppl on is great…gotta love the murder prank…maybe u dont…do ask me…i didnt do it…anyway keep it up!
DAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HINT: Amazon Prime is free for college students!
Dave Clayman needs to be on the podcast more often.
I second this.
Great episode guys.
Me too.
David Clayman is pretty awesome. I don’t listen to TRL often anymore, but TCAE is a really, really good podcast. ER… was a really, really good podcast.
I like the vibe Clayman brings to the podcast. While Robert Ashley and Scott Bromley are quite funny, they kind of steal the show. Everyone on this episode seemed to enjoy themselves and have a good time. I would like to see him on again.
Thanks guys, love having my favorite podcast for the lonely weekend shift feeding the Chinook fry………..
you guys are BOSS
As funny as I find Clayman, one of the reasons why I stopped listening to IGN’s podcasts was that they don’t seem to take anything seriously. I kind feel bad for the people with honest questions who just got laughed at by Clayman.
If you’re gonna bring Clayman back, at least ask him to approach the podcast more seriously. At least Bromley seemed more professional when he was replying to letters.
This is the kind of shit that makes me question RFM taking relationship questions at all. How are these people qualified to give serious and legitimate answers. THIS IS A GAMING PODCAST! Please, if you want help, take your questions elsewhere; otherwise just enjoy the levity that these guys provide. Being able to laugh at the tragedies in our lives makes it easier for us to deal with them. And again if you really NEED help, please go to a doctor with your problems.
Exactly. This is why I don’t want these IGN hacks on the podcast. They’re not journalists or writers. They’re personalities. Very immature.
What does that have to do with an IGN person being on?
Unless I misread it Jose seem to say if you really wanted true serious help without a single person making a joke about it then don’t go to RFM. I mean everyone else has at one time joked about a letter that was supposed to be serious.
The relationship letters are a great diversion. If people are looking for real answers, they should contact their family, health care professionals, counselors, or a friend. While I enjoy the segment, I certainly would not depend on the advice of the members of Rebel FM. I do not say this to be dismissive of Rebel FM, but I also would not call Loveline and ask them for recommendations on motion controllers.
I personally loved that Clayman was on this episode. When they discussed bondage and Arthur said something to the effect of “More women than you think are into that sort of thing” and Dave said “Yeah, so just hit women willy-nilly,” I cracked up. I certainly wouldn’t endorse going Mel Gibson on any ladies, but the comment was outrageous and hilarious. It’s a podcast about video games, not the national debt or the Gulf Oil Spill.
Also, as long as I’ve been following the ex-EGM/1UP crew, remember that Anthony, Arthur, and Ryan Scott are all employed by IGN now and could be considered “IGN people”. I personally like the fact that some people from my favorite podcasts are appearing on Rebel FM. It’s like someone mixed up LAN Party and Nintendo Voice Chat or Three Red Lights. I think that’s a good thing.
I’d wager that the listeners who send in the questions know what to expect.
And I’d like to respond to the guy with too many women with the following quote by Henry Rollins: “Dear guy, fuck you.”
First, when has RFM ever taken anything seriously?
Second, to the other guy, who cares if IGN’s writing may not be great, they’re funny.
I think you’re missing the point.
I for one love the relationship letters because they aren’t taken seriously for the most part.
Dave was great. I hope you have him back soon.
Meh, listened since the beginning, but not so sure I want to carry on.
Arthur’s constant fascination with penises has finally outweighed any other enjoyment I get out of this podcast. Every time I hear a dick joke or a musket-compared-to-dick joke or some other equally crude remark I actually cringe. Now, I love cocks as much as the next guy, but I haven’t had whatever weird life experiences Arthur has that cause him to compare being happy to having an erection, enjoying something to ejaculating, and having respect for someone to letting them fuck him in the ass.
However, Arthur’s opinions on a lot of games differ quite a bit from my own, so I’d still like to hear what he thinks, I just wish he didn’t make it so difficult.
Wait….you love cocks?
Might I suggest the Courteous And Serious Gamescast for Gentleman, it’s a really good show, and I think it’s right up your alley. And by up your alley I mean you’d like to put it in your assbum.
Denial is the first step towards acceptance.
”I love cocks as much as the next guy”
Hahahaha, depends what guy you’re standing next to I think.
Arthur manages to choose the best song on The Downwards Spiral. NIN F YEAH!!!
I really don’t get Anthony’s disappointment in Metro 2033, I justed played through it lately and loved every moment of it. Gameplay was great, and the Story and Atmosphere was awesome keeping me going.
yeah, but Metro 2033 COULD have been so much more than what it was. it felt pretty dated.
still, the concept and setting were really were executed though. loved the story and the atmosphere.
Dave was fucking gold during the letters segment.
I totally agree about Brutal Legend. That’s got to be the most overrated game I’ve played in the last few years. I can’t believe it got high 8′s and 9′s. It isn’t complete garbage, but it’s certainly not good.
I don’t think it was about that game being overrated, but over-hyped. Everyone wanted it to be wonderful, because everyone is still dick riding Psychonauts for some reason (THAT game is overrated), but it wasn’t but still resulted in a few inflated scores.
To me it is a 8 or 9 in the writing department. Hell I hate Jack Black and I loved him in the game.
My only gripe was the gameplay.
So your only problem with a video game was the game part of it: that’s pretty much the consensus.
I know people who loved the RTS moments of the game to death and played multi like crazy.
Brutal Legend’s hype was just as bad as Assasin Creed’s hype. And both games were bad.
And the FAIL COMMENT of the podcast goes toTyler’s GT5 “landing without a splash”. There’s really desperately reaching for a prediction. Then there’s that. How fucking high are you, Tyler?!
Observbation: Crackdown 2 is getting way too much discussion, not just on rebel FM but pretty much every gaming podcast in existence, for a game that is utterly fucking mediocre at best and completely unmemorable. Please spend more time talking about how shitty that game is, it’s riveting!
Otherwise..good show. It was nice to have Gamin’ Clayman on.
Tyler’s got some really weird ideas about certain games. He thinks that because he personally doesn’t like GT5, it won’t sell.
That Dave guy was a great guest. I’d never heard him on any podcast before, but if he was on every Rebel FM from now on I wouldn’t complain.
My god. I love Dave’s response to the bondage question. I was in tears.
What was the podcast Tyler said he’s on? I thought I heard Gamertard but a Google search comes up blank.
Should have checked his Twitter feed.
http://radarhead.libsyn.com/
If anyones as retarded as I am.
I was hoping one of you guys would have played Medal of Honor by now, the beta’s been out for a while and you guys seem to love other DICE games.
I just have to chime in on singularity. I am on board with J Gerts review. I really enjoyed the game. I have played a alot worse that got praised higher. I liked it more than Alan Wake and wolfenstien. also you guys should have a contest where the winner gets to sit in on the podcast and then let me win it. Thanks later
You guys brought up Bioshock 2 again this week, and as usual with that game it’s in a comparison with Bioshock. Since Bioshock 2 is probably one of my favorite games of the year I thought I’d chime in.
It’s not “better than Bioshock in every way” like someone sent in. I also wouldn’t say the opposite is true; the games are different and each has its own strengths.
Bioshock introduced Rapture fenomenally well. Discovering Rapture was one of the greatest things about the game, and Rapture is the first thing people mention when talking about it. In Bioshock 2 we just revisit Rapture, which doesn’t have the same impact of course, but still I loved going there.
People say Bioshock is “not really about combat” but Bioshock 2 improved that to the point where I actually enjoyed shooting and using plasmids against the enemies. You became super powerful which is something some people don’t like, but I can’t sympathize: from setting up traps for killing enemies just as you trigger the battles to tricking a Big Daddy into killing another, it’s was just a lot of fun to mess with the variety of options you had available. The upgrade system was stream lined too. The combat went from something I tolerated in Bioshock to one of my favorite shooters.
I also think it’s a shame that people dismiss Bioshock 2′s story as just a repeat but with Sofia Lamb instead of Andrew Ryan. Yes, it tells a story about a person that rules Rapture with crazy ideals, but that’s not the only story it tells. Your character takes part in the game this time with a significant story arc and the game has a lot of different interesting characters.
The difference between the two in terms of story is that Bioshock 2 is much more humane in how it deals with… everything. For example, Bioshock barely touches on the bond between Big Daddies and Little Sisters and when it does it’s from Ryan’s and Suchong’s twisted perspective and how that affected Rapture’s ADAM economy. Bioshock 2 had some really heartbreaking moments exploring that bond. In Bioshock everyone in Rapture is a whacko that’s only out for themselves (Ryan, Atlas, Suchong, Steinman, Cohen, etc) while Bioshock 2 goes for a different take on things with stories that had a different kind of impact on me, while still felling like they belonged in Rapture. In fact, I love Rapture more because of that.
Of course the game isn’t perfect. Sofia Lamb is unnecessarily too much like Ryan, the Big Sisters felt like they should have been cut from the game, the dialogs and audio logs were not as well written. It’s still an amazing game specially for being the studio’s debut. I personally can’t wait for their next game.
Sorry for the long post, I’ve had a lot of coffee and my brain is too fried to do more real work. Anyway, it was nice to have Tyler and Matt back again this episode, and I thought Dave was a really good guest. Keep it up.
Well put. There was nothing that grounded me more in Rapture than the silhouette of a little sister clinging to my back. In Bioshock I found out I was there because my hand was forced, but in Bioshock 2 I went back because family means everything. And again, while Bioshock used names like Big Daddy and Little Sisters to denote an Orwellian hierarchical position or social status, in Bioshock 2 those terms took on a more filial gravitas.
Clayman is both depressing and funny. My man!
Dave Clayman is a much better IGN special guest than Scott Bromley and Brian Altano. He actually spoke when no one else was speaking and inserted jokes at moments when it was appropriate. His comments also added to the discussion rather than forced a pause just to get a shock reaction.
I like Clayman on the other IGN podcasts as well, so this was no surprise.
I went back to Ninja Gaiden Black after finishing Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, and Sigma 2 is a significantly more fun game to play. Having two extra shoulder buttons to use for ranged weapons makes a huge difference, and not having to go into the Pause menu to use items makes the game flow a lot more smoothly like Dave said.
Hmm, not sure I agree that Last Guardian is the only reason to not sell your PS3. I can think or like 10 or more reasons not to. Even if you dont like Last Guardian or it lets you down, I would still keep it for the other great stuff. IMO its just as good as 360.
Nice music choices this week. Some of my favorite 90s bands.
Have Clayman on again, please. He’s funny; and even if he wasn’t, his laugh is.
Another great show guys. Dave was awesome, too; he’s as funny as Scott Bromley but infinitely less annoying. Definitely get him back sometime.
Thank you for the great show. I feel every episode where there are people on top of the trio of Anthony, Arthur and Tyler a super special episode, so really I’m super delighted most weeks.
I have nothing against long first segments. Or long second segments. Or long letter segments. More talk on current games and upcoming games is always appreciated. Despite all the distractions (need more cat and dog cameos!), much of the gaming discussion I find to be insightful and occasionally thought provoking, as well as the advice on writing in general. Keep up the fun discussion!
whoa, teenage flash back with the music breaks.
I thought Dave was shit hot. He is the thinking man’s Scott Bromley.
j/k
Great episode in spaaaaaaaaaceee, in the desert next week perhaps?
I don’t know what all this talk of Final Fantasy 7 not holding up is all about. I still play it once every year or two and it’s still a fantastic game. The combat is still fun and well designed and the characters and story are still enthralling.
Same with Chrono Cross, which Arthur mentioned as a game he wished was better. There were so many good ideas in that game, like the stamina based combat and the ability to auto-heal after a fight was over, and the vaguely non-linear but still well directed mission structure was great. Plus the music is still the best in any game I’ve played. Unlike a lot of games it’s not just good “game” music, but good music, period.
Great episode, guys. Dave Clayman is one funny motherfucker. Clayman takes a place as my fav RFM guest together with Bromley, Ashley and Altano.
Oh by the way, you need to put Kat from 1up on some time to school you fools on why Demon’s Souls is great. Although, as Ryan Scott would put it, you are all perfectly entitled to your wrong opinions.
Much love, gentlemen. You all make this an awesome podcast. Also, it’s great that Monsieur Chandronait is a regular now.
I got extremely fucking excited when I heard the title “Captain Blood”. Thought: “Oh shit! They’re remaking/re-releasing/re-imagining that incredibly amazing/strange sci-fi Amiga game with music by Jean Michel Jarre? I’ve been wishing for a legal release of that or the sequel Commander Blood for years!!” … and then you started talking about pirates and stuff. That was disappointing. Sure, I love pirates as much as one of the above posters love dicks, but nothing compares to strange french sci-fi games where you piece together sentences in alien languages to converse with strange creatures, or where you send out fucking space dolphins to explore other planets — or has Jean Michel Jarre music on the fucking title screen.
More. Dave. Clayman.
Another episode where guys take a giant dump on Demons Souls.
Can you answer this on the next podcast, why do you guys dislike the game so much?
I’m not even a big RPG but I could hardly pull myself away from this game. Quite possibly my favorite game of all time.
The game just isnt for everyone. Some people are masochist and some aren’t.
Dave was great fun. Bring that man back please.
For Serious Sam I’d recommend playing it in Classic Co-Op mode with as many players as you can find on a server. Having another 15 people tagging along turns an already franticly paced game into utter chaos.
The community on the PC is generally quite friendly in the Co-Op modes and hardly anyone cares if/when players drop in and out as the empty slots tend to fill pretty quickly.
Not only that, but you have unlimited respawns also!
Not only was Captain Blood a real person, I think maybe he features in my family tree somewhere way back. Then again, so does a mermaid…
On a totally unrelated note, some genres never rise above x-clone status. I can’t think of any commonly used term to describe games like Shatter other than Breakout clone.
I even went through and counted the Transformers talk this time through, about 5 minutes. Much better guys.
What’s this about hating on Demons Souls? Matt went down a couple notches in my book after that comment. Did any of group bother to actually beat it?
Played Deus Ex last week Arthur, game (including combat) still holds up. A game doesn’t have to be a 360 exclusive with HD graphics to be a good game.
Sad to hear Tyler is shot down when he spoke the truth about GT5. Drop in the bucket, it won’t sell well like Sony thinks it will.
Keep up the great work guys!
Goddamn, you guys sure take podcasts seriously. What exactly is wrong the writing on IGN? Just because you don’t agree with one guy’s opinion doesn’t mean the entire site is shitty.
