Rebel FM: Portable Op

With a time crunch and scheduling issues, we tried to experiment this week with some portable recording solutions. As such, the audio quality is less than usual, but still: video games! This week we talk about Blacklight, Tribes: Ascend, Fez, The Witcher 2, Spec Ops multiplayer, and more!

This week’s music:

I swear Rebel FM is like an absentee father. I wait on the steps every Friday night, and most of the time, he doesn’t show. But sometimes, just sometimes, he’ll be there right when he said he would.

I like it when that happens.

  2. Bob says:

You guys are never going to talk about Mass Effect 3, Are you?

  3. wangdangle says:

Maybe it is about time to hang up the mics.

It’s okay if you don’t enjoy The Witcher 2 (your loss), but you don’t need to try to explain away other people’s taste with things like “people only like it because it was a PC exclusive” and stuff like that. It seems to have gotten a warm reception from the console crowd.

Some games just don’t click for certain people. If you don’t like the art, can’t get into the story and get hung up on the small stuff then I understand if you don’t like the game. However, when the story and presentation clicks for you it’s very easy to overlook stuff like the map not being great. That doesn’t mean people are crazy for liking the game. Just look at the metric ton of jank people overlook in Skyrim.

  5. Ragenaut says:

All I heard during the Witcher 2 conversation “This game is too hard and isn’t a triple A call of gears of halo or super artsy 8-bit-but-not-quite platformer, so I think it’s mediocre!”

Arthur, if you can’t see how choices impact the game, you either haven’t been playing it, or you’re simply blind. Like, it’s so readily apparent, and it’s not even subjective thing. This isn’t a matter of opinion- the game wildly changes based on choices made.

Why are you idiots allowed to write about games, when you’re so aggressively opposed to understanding anything outside your very narrow purviews?

  6. Dirk_Dexter says:

Love the show. keep it up.

  7. Eiskaltnz says:

I understand how people would dislike The Witcher 2 even though I have not met anyone in real life that does.

The main thing I don’t get is how both Matt and Arthur do not understand how your choices make the game play out differently… There are two versions of act 2 is how I can put it bluntly.

Animation is the weakest part of the visuals though everything looks great and I do feel that each of the ‘factions’ do totally fit in together with their own art style.

And Arthur I do understand how you missed the mutagens explanation as one of my friends did the same thing. I guess we have been taught in game that we will be told the same thing over and over again to make sure we do not miss anything.

Finally I am just sick of the unforgiving and hard = bad argument. Games are too easy now days :P.

Arthur has some valid criticisms. The map is fucking terrible, which isn’t in and of itself too bad, except the GPS waypoints are worse. During Act 2 in Vergen, I got lost in that Dwarven maze a couple of times while looking for the spot the quest wanted me to go to. The marker said Vergen, the map said Vergen, except that I was supposed to go to a forest to the north of Vergen. That’s just piss poor, no matter the game.

That all being said, I’m willing to forgive The Witcher 2 its flaws, as irksome as they may be. I love the characters and the universe.

I just wish there was a classic “witcher” style armour in the game. You know, like the first game. =\

  8. iceveiled says:

And this week on shitting on games that everybody else likes….

  9. Dave says:

Fucking trolls. You bitch everytime they say something you don’t wanna hear. Buncha ten year old girls. You don’t like’m don’t listen every week.

Arthur’s edit: I’m going to approve this comment, but in the future, please refrain from antagonistic bullshit in the comments. It doesn’t make me feel any better than seeing people crap all of us in the comments.

The fact is The Witcher 2 was released in a broken state. It took several months for it to finally be fixed. I found it to be playable only after the v2.0 patch that introduced the dark mode to the game. I actually love it and I think most do as well but during the first few months I was literally in tears trying to like and play it.
