360 Arcade Official

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

The Arcade has been made official and has been given a price. For 279$ your family will be able to enjoy a 360, a 256 MB memory card, and five arcade games. The system will also include HDMI.

The real question is: with a price point of 279$, will this finally be what the 360 needs to steal away Wii sales?

I am not sure that a bundle with arcade games is going to be enough. I am not sure what age group they are really trying to attract. I don’t know that casual gamers are familiar enough with the Live Arcade service that a system with casual games is going to galvanize them into making a 300$ purchase. Furthermore, if they are gullible enough to buy into the system and really get into live Arcade games, they’ll still only have 256MB of memory — aka they are going to run out of space fast.

Maybe this system will be enough to give the Microsoft sales boost legs.

New Xbox 360 Premium Systems May Have HDMI, But Are Not Using Cooler Chips.

Monday, August 13th, 2007

After Microsoft quietly released new Xbox 360 Premium SKUs into the market a couple of weeks ago, there was speculation as to whether or not they had new 65nm chips — you know, the ones that make them run at a reasonable temperature. Kotaku has received photos that show that the new Premium SKUs do not have the cooler chips, though they do have the same heat sinks that the Elite has.

While this will certainly disappoint many people I know, it is not the end of the world. The new Premium does at least control heat a lot better, and it has HDMI, all for the new low price. And, if that isn’t enough, it has a 3 year warranty standard with the system. Not a terrible deal, but not as great as it would have been with the new chip sets.
