Wii-saber

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

There are a few things that everyone had envisioned themselves using their Wii remote to impersonate. Many of you thought that you were going to be fighting like a samurai in Red Steel (only to be sorely disappointed), or perhaps shooting it up in a cowboy firefight. For the mega-nerds among us, there is but one fantasy that the Wii could really help make: a game that uses the Wii remote as a lightsaber.

Our prayers might soon be answered. At the final Hollywood & Games Summit panel Lucasart’s Jim Ward said, “internally we have already played a lightsaber game on the Wii. It’s a lot of fun, and we’ll get there.” Gamasutra, who released the information, speculates that this might be referring to the upcoming Wii release of Lego StarWars: The Complete Saga. The game does say that the player will use the Wii’s unique controls, so who knows?

Really LucasArt’s Jim Ward has just left many of us on an epic cliff hanger. We all want to fight the epic lightsaber battles from the movies, acting like a total douche in our bedrooms. Perhaps soon we will have the chance to see just how jedi like we can be when we’re sweating in our boxers. Please don’t fuck this up LucasArts.

Lucas Arts releases a new tech demo, and I release my bowels

Friday, March 9th, 2007

Lucas Arts released a new tech demo to feature some of the intricacies of the Star Wars: Force Unleashed engine, and so far, it looks pretty spectacular. There are, of course, still kinks to work out, which namely consist of the little things like collision and animation issues, yet are nevertheless issues that a man in the gaming industry can’t ignore.

However, so far the engine looks incredibly promising. I loved the old Jedi Academy games, and any opportunity to expand on the capabilities of the noble knights will always be welcome. If the videos are any indication, the game will provide hours of delight simply by toying with the game’s force effects. I can already picture the potentially massive influx of online videos, as they show a dozen or more storm troopers daisy-chained together, hanging from a piece of Coruscantian rubble.

I can’t effing wait.
